I've been waiting for a video like this! I wanted to try mountain hunting for several years now. I got cancer when I was 32. Now I am 12 years cancer free and this video just sparked a fire for me to get it done. Thank you guys!
Hate to see Clem walk away as its hard to find a mentor so willing to teach. But at the same time, this trip probably wasn't the best first experience in the woods for him. Stay strong Clem!
Number one rule of guiding is to read the client’s skill, knowledge, and physical abilities. This was more than brother Clem could handle physically. I know the goal was really to find a new cameraman that would keep up and put up with you but I’m sure you both learned a lot from the experience. I used to be a lot like Dan, nobody could keep up, I had a lot of knowledge to share and I wanted to succeed so badly. A few times I’ve pushed myself and the pushed the person I was with beyond a breaking point. Sometimes it means accomplishing less that day but I’ve learned to only travel at the pace of the slowest team member. They will still be exhausted but the key is that they recover. They learn more when they aren’t puking. Also I take personal responsibility for water. If someone in my team runs out of water it’s my fault. It takes a successful team to be successful. Great video Clem. Dan best of luck in your pursuit for a cameraman. This is the best video I’ve watched on the channel. It’s so real and shows the raw human element of the experience in the mountains. It shows Dan and Clem in the rawest form and I think we all learned a lot.
I thought about the water all night after a watched this, I’ve backpacked into wilderness areas for 16 years in Colorado and I always camp by water. I always have the largest cuddyback in my pack plus 2 liter bottles. I love Dan but he should have given him a list clothes and all. As you stated he wasn’t physically in condition for this. I’m 66 and work out 4 days a week for 3 hours a day and I’m in the best shape of my life but the mountains still kick my butt. I really liked your comments .👍🏹
I agree with you Jrhunter about this video being raw and candid. I loved it. It is so hard to explain to people what is required physically and mentally to hunt in the backcountry or front country for that matter. It is WAY different than hunting whitetails out of a stand or blind a few hundred yards from the truck and the DQ 😂. All joking aside, it’s tough. I spent 6 months training 4 hours a week to get ready for a NM Elk hunt back in October. The guides were great at reading clientele out in the field. My guide was a 51 y/o Pueblo Native American, 10 years older than me, and it was all I could do to keep up. We were MOVING, hunting aggressively. Following tracks and at times running to cut off a bull. Which worked I might add. But it took everything I had to succeed. He told me if I put in the miles, I’ll get the bull I supposed to have. If I don’t, well, that bull will live another day and become someone else’s harvest. I don’t like talking about these kind of hunt’s because I’m no expert. I just have one weeks worth of elk hunting experience under my belt so I’m green. But I learned a lot of Do’s and Don’ts that I feel EVERY new hunter should know to have a better understanding of what they signed up for. To some, none of this matters, to others, well, could end up like Clem and that isn’t good. Best of luck to Clem and Dan. That was one great video to show how the Mountains are the great equalizer.
I agree with jrhunt414. I am a new elk hunter and I have been training 4 months five days a week with weighs, cardio and pack this year and the year before six months and I still don't know if I am in good enough shape. I spend 30 years in the Marine Corps being very physical from day one and as you get new Marines in your unit you can't break them off with a 30 miles ruck march. You have to take ot in stages so that you can access their conditioning. Then you build from their! I don't know the back store if Dan asked what kind of shape Clem was in. Obviously he wasn't ready and he got broke because he never returned! Great comments from all 3!
Good work hanging on Clem, hope you try it again. You didn't fail, you learned. Dan - That was probably too rough of a starter. A mile or two from the truck for peoples first night in the back country is better mentally and physically if something goes wrong or they forget something. I pushed someone too hard their first time and it ruined it for them. Also, many people cant eat freeze-dried food, always good to try them before being in the backcountry and eat something they are used to. Hope you continue the series.
Clem keep it up brother! Not quitting is 90% of the battle. I got my first elk last year and it was solo in Idaho. You can E Scout all you want but damn mountains is steeper when you’re standing at the base! Stick with it my man and with Fan helping you you’ll punch that tag! Awesome job brother! Don’t be discouraged.
Way to stay positive!! The biggest lesson we ever learned on our first Elk hunt, water is everything! with out enough water you just can't recover and it just starts to spiral, electrolytes get out of wack and its just miserable, way to hang tough though, and you're right the best way to learn is to experience the back county!
This was an awesome video, was stoked to see Clem hang in there despite feeling so poorly. Most would have cut out after that first rough evening. He definitely stepped up. Bummed to hear he bowed out, not many would have hung in there like he did. Hopefully he comes around and realizes how tough he was for sticking it out.
Before sunrise, thermals will usually be moving downhill. But as soon as the sun hits the ground, thermals can begin moving uphill with the rising warm air. Use these movements to your advantage. Hunt your way uphill early in the mornings with the wind in your face - but beware of that sudden change as the sun appears. It can happen pretty fast. I just wanted to clarify this as it was a bit confusing when Dan said which way to hunt in the mornings. At least to me it was! Lol
Mad props to Clem for giving this a try and hanging in there. Also have to give Dan mad love for sharing his invaluable experience, knowledge, and mentorship. I wish both Dan and Clem the absolute best. However, the show must go on. Dan, I hope the series continues.
Man, what a shock at the end. I would love to get mentored, but location isn't close as I am in WY, but I am going to be an elk hunter. 3 years ago I went through a transformation losing almost 100 lbs, and now I am dead set on learning how to hunt, eat clean, and destroy obstacles that get in my way. Dan, what you are doing is awesome. Keep it up and I pray your path crosses a soul ready to be mentored.
Love this video, Clem got such a great experience. Sadly it seemed it was too much of a wake up call. Hate to see that he threw in the towel but he hung in there! Please keep going with the rookie series! Tons of great info!
Some guys just aren't cut out for it. It takes a lot to hunt in the high country and to be honest with yourself and others so as to avoid situations where the outcome could be far worse than a hurt ego. Best of luck to both dudes.
@@ElkShape I hope neither of you are too discouraged by the outcome. I know it sucks but the more I think about it, this may be one of the most important video series you've done to date. Guys that are plugged in/veteran hunters are looking for technical details on elk hunting. People that are new or wanting to get into elk hunting really need an unromanticized view of the realities involved with elk hunting, first, before the technical details. You and I can debate gear and techniques all day like pigs in the mud but the lifestyle demands behind the gear and techniques are what the newcomers need. That being said, I hope you continue this series, if not with clem, someone else or simply by yourself. Just a thought. I really dont see a lot of other videos out there that touch on the sum total of what it takes to get into the lifestyle.
For me, hydration is key. I sweat more than my hunting buddies and i end up drinking twice as much as they do. Keep your head up Clem and use this as a lesson learned. Dan, i hope you can keep this series going.
I loved everything about this video Dan, except the outcome. It was inspiring to see the excitement, anticipation and nervousness with Clem and I give you high fives on for sharing a wealth of knowledge with a beginner. Hopefully this will spark some drive and more motivation in Clem to get back out there later on. Great Video Dan.
I love the basic concept of the video. Lots of information & eye penning for anyone who wants to venture off in the back country. If your a beginner, always find someone with experience, your life could depend on it. Clam did a great job, maybe he didn't think that they back country was for him. Hope he keeps the outdoor life going in some capacity. Thanks Dan for putting together these videos.
Love your info and channel! Good to see you taking someone new into the woods and passing down your knowledge. I would love to see videos about the training you implement with Clem to prepare him for elk season. Much love!
Oh man, I just found this series and was freaking stoked to see it play out. Bummer that Clem bailed out. As a Midwesterner with zero elk knowledge, a bowhunting trip for these animals is at the very top of my bucket list. This kind of education is exactly what I've been looking to absorb. Keep it going guys!
Dan this was a great series. Sad to see Clem give up on the hunting. This hunt might have been a little too much for a beginner, but it gives great insight for any first-time elk hunters, you really have to prep, prep, prep. Dan, this is also a good reminder for all hunters. Our fall season actually starts now. Conditioning, stretching, scouting, practice shooting, and practice climbing. Don't want to wake up one day and find your tree saddle is too snug! ;) Great job Dan!!
Great episode! Clem you did great. Wish you all the best. The mountains are no joke. Keep it up, Dan. Really enjoy this content. Being new to elk hunting, I have learned so much. Hopefully, you can find a new rookie so we can learn as well.
Thank you for this video series I can't wait to see your workout routine. I am a Florida boy and went elk hunting in 2020 in Colorado for second rifle. I got my butt handed to me on that hunt. We froze and got altitude sickness. It was pure torture but every day I dream of going back. I pulled a tag for Montana this year and I train everyday now. Running and shooting my Bow has become my life after work. I also section hike the APT as much as I can for practice. There was a ton of good advice in this video thank you.
Holy hell the transition from Dan talking about bugle calls with Clem trying not to die to the transition of him hurlin had me howlin😂😅. Keep at it Clem, all you need is time and commitment
Man this was shaping up to be such an awesome series, shame Clem dropped out. Not hating on him but he will look back on this one day and regret his decision. Once in a lifetime opportunity. Good luck finding a new apprentice and kicking this series off again.
This was a great video for me, I started hunting later in life and I am excited to do my first hunt in the deer woods camping out just like this video. I have been watching a lot of gear dumps but this video shows start to finish of the hunting experience. Thank you and Clem for making this.
Wow. As a newbie hunter, I am so jealous of Chlem and feel sorry that he walked away. You can tell he wasn't prepared physically and at the end when Dan said he was going to do a nutrition and exercise video, you can see it on his face, Clem knew it wasn't for him. I'd do just about anything to have a mentor like Dan, what a missed opportunity.
I really enjoyed this video. INCREDIBLY informative and helpful. I'm also very bummed to hear he stepped back. I'm really looking forward to watching and learning more! If I was local, I'd 100% take his place. I go on my first elk hunt in Colorado just after Labor Day 2024. I will be hunting with my pops and his cousin but I want to prep and learn all I can beforehand. Thanks y'all! Super grateful for this channel and the amount of information it provides. If any of yall need anything while in Minnesota, reach out.
Hey Dan! I love your channel! I just started archery a few months ago in preparation for my first hunting trip in South Dakota. I’m hooked! I feel like I fit the criteria for your next mentee, but I live in Austin…such a shame. Best of luck to Clem and thanks for always pumping out top notch content and keeping it 100 💪🏼
The bear woods will define what you need to do. A baseline was drawn out for him. The plan gets formulated. Clem might not have been ready this year to follow that plan but it will easily drive him towards becoming better. When he’s ready he’ll be that much wiser. He’ll be that much more focused. That is why we expose and guide people into hunting at a pace that can make them and ourselves a bit better each time. You were both lucky to share what time you had together. You never know, that kid might just surprise you with a Round 2. I hope you adopt another rookie who’s also as eager to learn. It’ll make for some great content in a perspective not typically found on TH-cam. Thanks for sharing.
Dang, great video. I hope he reads all the great comments because he certainly has potential. He seemed very willing to learn and had a great attitude.
Wow you are awesome. Wish I could do this it’s beautiful country. You really are a great guy. Awesome that you are showing him the ropes. I’m learning so much just by watching your videos so thanks in advance. 🙏🏽
Very awesome episode!!! So much info, never been Elj or Bear hunting, but this was awesome!! Dan you are a very generous man, I believe you will continually be blessed because of it! You really hooked Clem up!
Dan, Thanks for being willing to be a mentor for up and comers. Sometimes we pursue new things and we end up realizing our pursuits just aren't our thing. I quit a rugby team in Boise because after a year of playing I realized that I'm a lot of things, but a rugby player isn't one of them. Frankly, sometimes friendships become a lot stronger after a couple of nights in a tent, and sometimes those relationships fall apart. I've had it go both ways. Regardless, thanks and good job for taking someone under your wing. Clem, goodbye and good luck.
This was very informative. There's a difference in camping and hunting that this video clearly shed a ton of light on. It's sad that Clem missed out on what I think is a life changing opportunity, and I commend him for trying. Love the content! Thanks
No worries Clem, you gotta start somewhere. I am not ready for my elk hunt in September, but I am glad I get to see how hard it is from someone in my shoes
good job clem, if you've never even slept outside before this would have been quite a challenge. Keep working on your conditioning and hold onto that positive attitude dude., you go this.
I thought the last bit about Clem was going to be a joke. I'm sorry you lost him! I enjoyed seeing the way you guys pack. I do things a little different coming from an ultralight long distance hiking background, but you have to do what works for you! Keep the videos coming!
Hunted wilderness in Colorado for 16 years, last 5 by my self and I’m 66 with 60 lbs on my back. Yes water is life in the mountains. You definitely need a mentor to hunt in the mountains they are very unforgiving. But what an enormous adrenaline to be up there.
after finishing the video i feel bad for commenting to early and hope you find another person. i wish clem the best it could not have been an easy decision
I'm sorry but I laughed soo hard at the end, Dan I hope you find someone that wants it as much as you do. I still love the videos and I'd say ElkShape gives me inspiration like ole Cam Hanes. Shu' shaa nin-la (thank you) Dan
Sorry to hear about Clem. Not everyone is able to get the mind set and willingness to succeed. Good luck and don’t worry Dan your channel is still the most truest form for raw content.
Dan said it best. The mountains never lie. You HAVE to be prepared. There is a huge takeaway here for all those new to bowhunting or hunting in general. You can't take the backcountry lightly, it is unforgiving. You are in the animals environment that they live in 365 days a year. They have the upper hand. Do you have what it takes, have you done your homework, are you physically fit, have you got your arrow reps in, do you have the gear, the patience and the will to get it done? Sorry to hear that Clem didn't. Very cool of Dan to invest so much time and mentor someone new to hunting.
For me I just mountain bike all summer. It works my lungs and legs. .Some people just don't like to suffer.. Like my dad always said Pain is weakness leaving the body let's go.
Fricken Awesome mentor!! Dan been watching your channel grow and its such a motivation for me. Good luck to brother Clem in the future! wish you were in AZ ida signed up for that all day!! first elk hunt in november wish me luck.
Great video series. Looking forward to more content the same. Sorry Clem changed his mind and wish I lived in the Spokane area to apply for the next experience. Train hard , Train smart!
I didn’t expect for it to end that way. But I do understand just how difficult it is to hunt that type of country. My first hunting experience put me on my ass and I only stayed overnight one night! But it just goes to show just how easy it is to be unprepared for this type of environment. If you were in the northern Colorado area I’d def ask if I could be on the series.
Really writing this because I'm curious about running the alien holster under the bino harness. Could you do a video where you draw from that configuration or speak to it please?
Clem!!!!!! You found the areas that you need to work on. Get to work brother. You'll get there. Listen to Dan. He'll of a mentor. I can't wait to see how you grow!.... right as i was about to press send... don't give up Clem
I love this series. As an east coast hunter preparing for my first west coast trip this stuff helps me recognize where some of my weaknesses may be, what I may not be thinking of, and where I need to put more emphasis. I understand if Clem wanted to tap out but as much as Dan invested in him I think he should have been more up front about it. Do an episode about why and walk away with your head held high. Dropping off the gear without warning and then sending a break-up text to the guy who’s been mentoring you isn’t a good look IMO.
Loved this video. Love seeing a beginner and seeing all of the gear. Sad to hear he wasn’t up for continuing. However, that was a lot for someone that isn’t in great shape. Super weird how he just dropped the stuff off and sent a text. Poor dude must have been embarrassed.
So I wrote my last comment 3/4vid. Still i don't take back. That was a very epic move to take hik out there regardless bc it was sacrificing your time on a hunt. You tried and tried to pass it on. Kudos for the efforts and sacrifices of your time Dan. I have a lot of friends who hunt but no one left that wants to hunt with myself personally. I don't mind packing in 2hrs before sunrise going more than others, I love working harder for the best chances, and I love passing a good one for the one I knows in there area living... That said, it's not everyone. I wish him well also. Doesn't mean anything on him.. good for him to get out of his comfort zone and try. That's more than most people.. some just desire more. Best luck Dan and team keep it up don't stop the grind/reps.
Awesome video wish Clem could’ve stuck it out, but it’s not for everybody, you gotta be physically prepared and mentally prepared. It is not easy I wish I could do that! I know my body wouldn’t be able take it, three back surgeries hip replacement knee surgery. But I’m still trying I will get in the mountain and get my first deer I am determined. So thanks for the inspirational videos, I need them! I’m always watching I love these videos I’m learning so much.
Wow great 2 video for beginners Really enjoyed both videos and learned a lot Thanks Dan for all the great videos you film dropping so much knowledge Been learning a lot being new to bow hunting 🙏🏻 Sad to hear about Clem
Sorry to hear about Clems decision to part ways. Wish I lived closer. Would be a good program to be on. Mentally. Physically. Spiritually. And great commradary to boot. Good luck finding someone. 🤙🏻
Great video, a lot of things that I would have never considered. Your methods of travel are definitely something I would have never thought about. I would have just assumed I'd be walking the whole way, and spiking out was a foreign term to me too!!! I would love to be under your tutelage Dan, I feel like we share similar principles and I know absolutely nothing about bow hunting would love to learn from a pro!
This happened exactly to me. The package food +altitude sickness will wreck your trip. Id give it another shot and then also skip the Mountain house/Peak and go with a Cup of ramen or soup. It helps with water intake and then also the salt is always good. You will leave saying screw that and then another month later you will have that itch. Also start hydrating a week before. Take a Nalgene and drink it every two hours.
Definitely a lot of eye opening lessons learned and shown on this video. This is why you and others recommend doing a bear 🐻 hunt if you want to chase bugles or even mule deer 🦌 especially in the exact unit or similar unit. It’s a great physical and mental challenge for you, you can test out your gear systems including your food and how your body responds, you can kind of do a spring scouting trip while hunting bears 🐻 so you know access, shape of roads, etc… bear 🐻 tags 🏷️ are much cheaper than elk tags 🏷️ and Montana deer 🦌 tags 🏷️. You are a great mentor, willing to give him a hand up since he didn’t have much. I give him props for sticking with it on this excursion but I am bummed that he didn’t continue. I really like Clem and could definitely relate to him since I am from the east and hunt mostly whitetail and turkey 🦃 and occasionally fish 🎣. I know that I am currently NOT in shape both legs and lungs 🫁 wise, plus I had heart ❤️ surgery twice. So I definitely have a lot of work ahead of me before I decide to burn my points in Wyoming or Colorado for elk or even the OTC opportunities. But I am willing to do it. I have subbed to Clem’s channel and really enjoy his fishing 🎣 videos. If that’s the lane he wants to stay in then I still support him 100% there. I remember Hunter McWaters story of keeping up with you in New Mexico. Definitely a great way to challenge oneself in doing that and know where one is. God bless and I hope you find another new elk hunter and can continue the series. I really appreciate this idea and hopefully it will continue. 😎🏹
Outdoors is tough when we are not used to it , I’ve learned many lessons outside and my limitations with age and physical condition, great video was excited to follow the next outing and sad Clem decided it was not for him.
This was a great series. I would love to be able to have such an experience with your crew of people. I am no where close to being around you though. I also know I need to work on the legs and lungs just for the small mountains I climb here. Believe out west they are even larger.
Dang it, I wish we didn't live so far apart, I'd LOVE to volunteer as tribute. Grew up hunting whitetail here in Ohio, heading to Colorado this September for my first elk hunt. Thanks for all you do!
Man if I was just a bit younger with less responsibilities I would love to try out for the team. New to hunting, live in spokane, a lot of the same values. I think we could of done some cool things. Good luck brother.

Thanks 🙏🏽🙌🏽 great advise have my first archery bull hunt in November trying to do as much research as I can
Pretty much same advice for hunting whitetail. Hunters tend to forget or don’t learn how thermals work. Great advice.
Mad props to Clem for giving this a try and hanging in there. Also have to give Dan mad love for sharing his invaluable experience, knowledge, and mentorship. I wish both Dan and Clem the absolute best. However, the show must go on. Dan, I hope the series continues.
This is a great a idea for a series!
I love the enthusiasm!
Man that's pretty disrespectful to completely ghost like that.
Great couple videos you guys put out here! Wish we could see it through. Thanks for giving it a go Clem. Keep it up Dan! 👊🏻
This video has taught me a lot about backcountry hunting and I'd love to see more

Much love!
This was great. Thank you. I need a notepad and pen to take notes with everything covered.
That chin goatee is otherworldly.
Holy hell the transition from Dan talking about bugle calls with Clem trying not to die to the transition of him hurlin had me howlin😂😅. Keep at it Clem, all you need is time and commitment
That was so awesome!!!!! What a great video.
Passing on heritage!!!!! I'm from PA mtns not the same as you boys but passing it on is what it's all about. Rock on boys!!!
Sorry to hear about Clem moving on. He tried and that is more than 99% of others. Best of luck Clem. Keep kicking ass Dan.
100%
Awesome video! Thanks for all the information you’re putting out!
You got it!
Glad you liked it! Perhaps we’ll get to do more of these.
Yup! Maybe!!! You never know.
So rad man! Good work Clem! How motivating for your next hunt! Dan your the man. Everything your doing and knowledge is priceless!
this would be an amazing experience holy crap. i just got the new lift for next year hoping ill be able to get something with it
Good job Clem! Good on you Dan for imparting some experience and knowledge. At least now he knows what it takes to be a back country hunter.
For sure!
Love this series. Hope you find someone else to keep it going
What a cool thing Dan. Good on you brother,
Dan,
Thanks for being willing to be a mentor for up and comers.
Thanks
He gave it a shot. I give him credit for that.
This is just flat out awesome
Awesome video Dan, working getting two of my Sons to hunt with myself and my buddy this Sep in Colorado. This will be shared with them.
I thought the last bit about Clem was going to be a joke. I'm sorry you lost him! I enjoyed seeing the way you guys pack. I do things a little different coming from an ultralight long distance hiking background, but you have to do what works for you! Keep the videos coming!
Great series! Hopefully you can find someone close by - ha I'd do it but I'm over on the west side.
Damn was really excited for this series! Comes down to fitness
Hunted wilderness in Colorado for 16 years, last 5 by my self and I’m 66 with 60 lbs on my back. Yes water is life in the mountains. You definitely need a mentor to hunt in the mountains they are very unforgiving. But what an enormous adrenaline to be up there.
clem is honestly such a vibe! i feel like he represents all us newb hunters
after finishing the video i feel bad for commenting to early and hope you find another person. i wish clem the best it could not have been an easy decision
Dang I wish I lived near the area! I would have definitely got after it! It was a great amount of information on this mini series!
Dang i was loving the clem videos best of luck guy i hope you make it in the elk woods!!!
Nice effort Clem!
For me I just mountain bike all summer. It works my lungs and legs. .Some people just don't like to suffer.. Like my dad always said Pain is weakness leaving the body let's go.
I just wrote the same thing in my comment haha. That saying pushes me when when I it gets hard! Pain is just weakness leaving the body!
great video... really breaks down everything needed
Glad it was helpful!
just the video I needed to see being a new bowhunter
changing lives via outdoors, it doesnt get any better then this.
Awesome stuff! Wishing Clem would’ve stuck it through. Either way honesty and transparency is appreciated.
Good job Clem! Seriously!
Clem, so many 'men' won't be bold enough to say they don't know, well done. that's what this game is all about.
Wow! Didn't expect that!
Awesome film
Love it!
Wow great 2 video for beginners
Really enjoyed both videos and learned a lot
Thanks Dan for all the great videos you film dropping so much knowledge
Been learning a lot being new to bow hunting 🙏🏻
Sad to hear about Clem
Some guys just don’t have that love of suffering required to be an elk hunter.
Wish I lived year you, I would totally take you up on the offer.
I truly hope you find someone to take the spot and continue the series.
I hope so too!
Went out west for the first time last year. It kicked my ass. Got a big wake up call.
You get all that free gear and you walk away like that is crazy
This happened exactly to me. The package food +altitude sickness will wreck your trip. Id give it another shot and then also skip the Mountain house/Peak and go with a Cup of ramen or soup. It helps with water intake and then also the salt is always good. You will leave saying screw that and then another month later you will have that itch. Also start hydrating a week before. Take a Nalgene and drink it every two hours.
Thanks brother Amen inspirationally Humbling
Well said!
Your fuel is isopro a propane and butane mix.
White gas is similar to kerosene. It’s that liquid fuel you use in an MSR Wisperlite.
I learned I'm no where near ready.
Man if I was just a bit younger with less responsibilities I would love to try out for the team. New to hunting, live in spokane, a lot of the same values. I think we could of done some cool things. Good luck brother.
