What is the benefit of applying a layer of gray color before coloring? I really wish I knew the reason because I see a lot of painters doing it and it makes coloring easy and beautiful.
Every artist has different reasons for this, but I paint over areas to get a sense of the silhouette of the object and to make it easier to add the basecolor. So I think it doesn't actually have to be gray.
apart from what the artist has said, that is the same reason i do that, some artists like to define before hand the contrast of the piece before applying colors, helps to decide whats darker or lighter and makes the art more cohesive.
I agree too! In my process, tho and from what I've learned from others (just from my view as hobbyist), I found it to be also useful for separating elements, making sure none almost have the same shade of tint or shadow. Then, the color would depend on what shade that element is, but still varies in your lighting and element components like material of clothes or natural color of objects like metal
For me it also helps separate, fore, mid, and background (especially in digital where you’re able to mask layers!). Though I usually use monotone in different colors that match the vibe I want to achieve aswell! It’s like priming a canvas with a wash of a basic color to get a feel for the direction of the painting for me, it’s harder to visualize on a stark white canvas! There are millions of different reasons tho just as everyone else has stated💗
As a beginner artist, i have trouble deciding what color I want to use or it's very easy to over think a color and end up with a muddy artwork.
I at first thought grayscale made no sense but once u get into it, it really is helpful. Sure it can be just as time consuming but it helps u focus more on shading and lighting instead of guessing and end up with a muddy artwork full of random colors that don't go together.
I just recently discovered your channel and I just gotta say that your art really encourages me! I'm an on-and-off artist that draws about once a month when I feel like it LOL... But seeing your art and how it's improved even within two months through your videos motivates me to keep on drawing and drawing what I love :^) Also watching your processes helps me a lot. I use different colors for each painting and I don't palette my colors. The colors I use when painting are already recorded in the video, so you can watch it if you want.

It's hard to answer because I paint when I have time, and each painting takes a different amount of time. This one was painted over the course of a day.
