Replacing VW Tiguan front brake discs and pads

  • In this video I change the front brake discs and pads on a 2012 VW Tiguan 2.0 TDi 4Motion. This Tiguan had covered about 85000 miles and there was plenty of life left in the brake pads. Unfortunately the front brake discs had succumbed to the common problem of stuck brake pads, caused by inadequate maintenance, leading to uneven wear and then rust on the brake disc. This leads to reduced braking efficiency. This car was a good example of what commonly happens with brake disc wear, which is that the discs look fine from the outside, but once the wheel is removed and we inspect the back of the discs, it's a different story.
    This job involves jacking the car up and securing with axle stands, then removing the wheel. After that, the brake caliper, brake pads and pad carrier are removed, followed by the brake disc. On this car the brake disc was rusted into place on the hub so needed some encouragement to move from a hammer.
    After this, I cleaned up the hub, brake pad sliding surfaces and caliper slider pins. Next I sucked some brake fluid out of the reservoir, then retracted the brake caliper piston. The final steps were to install new Textar brake pads and discs, using Febi Bilstein ceramic brake pad paste.
    Parts used
    Textar brake pads ebay.us/pDPbiw
    Textar brake discs ebay.us/OUeAKH
    Febi Bilstein ceramic brake pad paste amzn.to/2E4pzy7
    Tools
    Jack and axle stands.
    Pliers.
    7mm hex or allen bit.
    Ratchet and/or breaker bar.
    Torx bit for the brake disc bolt.
    21mm socket.
    Wire brush set amzn.to/34W8Zeg
    Brake caliper piston retraction tool amzn.to/35SzdPc
    Files - the ones used in this video were from this set amzn.to/2IZaQH5 However if you want to buy some really nice files, I'd get some like this ebay.us/i3NuaC
    Thanks for watching and hope to see you again for the next video!

    I have a Toyota Corolla 2014 and dang does Toyota make it so simple and easy to work on those things. I don’t get why manufacturers don’t simplify their designs and instead complicate it. Lol

      I hear you, VW / Audi excel at making things complicated and I'm a big fan of the Toyota simplicity. You can go a long way with a 10mm wrench and socket on a Toyota! Having said that, I've got a Toyota Verso coming in for service soon and even that needs a special tool for the oil filter.

    Did anyone else spend half an hour on figuring out how to disconnect the wear indicator? I deeply dislike those vw connectors! :-D

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely! The first time I encountered one of those connectors it took me ages to work it out, but I've got the knack now!

    Please do not use a hammer to peel off the disc. uses an extractor. the reason is that hammer blows are dry impacts and this damages the ball bearings and they last much less time.

    Very nice video. One suggestion for install the disc. Insert 2 wheels nuts then tight the T25 disc screw. This way it will ensure the disc is aligned. I hope this will help.

    Hi! Awesome vid. Can you please do a video on the rear brakes with the Electronic Parking Brake system that requires a computer to unlock the brakes? Thanks! I have a 2018 Tiguan Limited

    This is great, about to do similar soon on my 2008 TDI 4M :) Where is that jack stand under there? the rear of the front lower control arm?

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes the jack stand is under the rear mounting point for the front lower control arm. I jacked the car up on the jacking point under the sill. You could also do it the other way round, i.e. jack it up at the control arm mount or other solid area underneath, then put the jack stand under the sill. Hope the job goes smoothly for you.

      @@AndrewFixes Perfect. I've got a MK5 GTI, so it's nearly the same layout and I do the same jacking point on that, good to know! Yes, I've got 2 struts and 2 shocks to do as well! Failed my roadworthy inspection recently (warrant of fitness) in New Zealand :/ But after 200,000kms it's to be expected!

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you've got plenty to do. As you say can't complain too much after 200k. Hopefully the struts/shocks aren't too challenging with a trustworthy spring compressor. The Tiguan came back recently after failing the MOT (UK equivalent of the warrant of fitness) with a broken rear spring so there will be a video on that coming up at some point.

    It's a good video but there are a lot of steps that have no explanation. Such as, "you might have to correct your brake fluid doing this.", why, how? Nothing is said as to why. I wouldn't think changing pads and rotors would require you to do anything with the brake fluid. I'm very mechanical but have never done a brake job. Just curious.

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I meant by that is that if the brake fluid was topped up to maximum with the pads virtually worn out, replacing the pads with brand new ones will require the caliper pistons to be pushed back into the calipers, which will in turn mean brake fluid from the calipers will be pushed back into the master cylinder. This could mean the master cylinder fluid level is above maximum, so you'd need to remove some fluid to get it back to the proper level.

      Hi Ryan, they are plastic weatherproofing plugs to stop grit/salt etc getting to the brake caliper bolts.

    In one nearby garage if you have enough material on the disk you can put in on a small lathe, remove a few though and make the discs pretty flat and even again

      Hi, thanks for the comment. I can't remember the exact brand of the brake caliper piston retraction tool but it was probably one of these amzn.to/35SzdPc

    so if im replacing the caliper also. is the brakeline just bolted on to the caliper

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is. Remember to replace the crush washers on the brake line and it may help to use a hose clamp on the flexible line to minimise fluid loss. You'll need to bleed the brakes when you're done.
