    How to remove front bumper?

  • @autoxer1970
    @autoxer1970 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Couldn't you have put the bracket on first, and then put the long bolt in the heater, then slipped the heater in and then screwed in the bolt?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +autoxer1970 The issue is that it's just a little difficult to get to the bracket bolts with the heater in the mounting bracket. The long bolt that permanently holds the heater into the mounting bracket is a little tricky to thread into the hole. It has to be well lined-up first to be able to thread it.

    Hi Benjamin! How is your heater working? Still no problems? I'm thinking about buying one but just I'm not sure which to buy, chinese or orginal.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, my heater still works fine. I've never had any issues with it. Overall, it was a really good decision for this car. The worst that I can say is that the fuel tank for it is rather small. I have to refuel often. The fuel tank I got works great, has all the right connections and everything. The next larger fuel tank I could find which would have worked well would have been physically a little too big to fit in the spare space in the car.

      @@BenjaminNelsonX thank you! That's really good to hear :) it seems that it's my turn for that upgrade. I have one more question but it's about battery. Did you made any battery upgrade? I have seen another video that you have replaced flooded pack. Do you remember what's dimensions of battery pack in our mievs? Or maybe what maximum size of cell we can put in package?

      @@mrkomis The traction battery in my iMiEV is completely stock. I don't know of anyone who has replaced/modified theirs for larger cells. That sort of a thing is much more straight-forward on a true DIY conversion, not so easy on a commercially-built electric vehicle.

      @@BenjaminNelsonX I've just purchased an Imiev. I'm thinking that if I replace the battery I'd put a marine/leisure battery in it (no cranking current required)

    This reminds me of the gasoline heaters sold(JC Whitney?) for the VW beetles back in the early 70's - though I never got one - had a '62 Bug.

    I live in Southern CA, so this is less of an issue, but I found the install to be great, and if I ever took my car to a colder climate I would be installing one of these. My ONLY concern with your particular install is that a good "tap" on that front bumper might compress the mount and shove it back into the heater. Or is the bumper bracket rigid ? If that's the case, your install is brilliant. I've enjoyed all of your videos. And, I LOVE my I-MiEV too.

    Kurze Frage
    das ist ja eine Wasserstandheizung, wo wie wird der Wasserkreislauf angeschlossen ?
    Der Wagen hat doch keinen Verbrennungsmotor, warum hat der irgendwie einen Wasser Wärmetauscher innen? oder was ist der technische Hintergrund zu der ganzen Geschichte die hier gebaut wird ?
    Gibt es einfach eine Information zu dem technischen Hintergrund zu diesem Fahrzeug ?

    Does the heater have an emergency shot off? What could happen in a frontal crash?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heater has a number of safety features built-in. The fuel is pumped mechanically from the tank. Without power, it stops. This is a heater designed for use primarily in semi-trucks. It's already part of the trucking industry, so it of course is designed for practical safe use.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Come to think of it, it's more likely that there would be a problem with the car's coolant system in a collision than a risk of fire. If the heater were crushed, coolant would gush out, but fuel would no longer be pumped to the heater.

    • @BingoBongoMan
      @BingoBongoMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenjaminNelsonX those heaters are very common in Germany and a few years ago I was looking to get one to install on a combustion engine car here in the US, primary for a better engine life and pre heating of course. That time I never thought about the safety, but the combination of open fire (in the chamber) and a fuel tank right behind the bumper somehow raised my concerns. Anyways, thanks for the great video & really good job.

    Hi Ben, it's Tom the guy at the energy fair with the purple iMiev, is there any real drawbacks for using the 2kwh version?
    And it's my understanding that you can run any fuel in these, even though the description says "Diesel" or "gasoline"? Thanks
    Ben

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom, It's my understanding that the only real difference between the "Diesel" and the "Gas" versions is the software - most likely having to do with how quick fuel is dispensed into the heater. You probably could run either fuel and still have it work, but not as well as it should. I purchased the Gasoline version because I run E85 ethanol fuel in mine. I think that the diesel version gives you the most heat. I believe that mine doesn't run as hot/powerful as it could because I'm using the gas version, and E85 has fewer BTUs than gasoline. I don't think I would recommend the 2kW version of Minnesota winters.

      Hi Ben, I just sent an email to your @me address you can disregard it, you just answered my questions, thanks Ben, I'll probably order one today, I hate to go dirty diesel 😩so I'll probably go the same route you did, if it's working ok😊

    excuse my ignorance .. why there is a radiator in an electric car?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +glakagz The radiator is in there both for the air conditioning and for cooling the power electronics in the car.

    • @glakagz
      @glakagz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BenjaminNelson ty for your reply
      I'm following several EV convertion youtubers
      I'm into my own conversion project, and from: Gas to Electric the radiator is always removed. The motor controller is air cooled.
      Of course in this case, I can tell this radiator is there by design.
      I got interested in this particular set of videos, because, being in Toronto, it's mandatory to have some "micro climate" in the cabin during winter.

    Any pros/cons between the diesel or gasoline versions? I know very little about these liquid fuel heaters, would be interested in running on bio-diesel

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The diesel version would give you a little more heat, just because diesel fuel contains more energy than gasoline does. Diesel is also safer/more stable/less likely to cause a fire. I got the gasoline version because I could then run E85 fuel through it, which is available at my local gas station. I considered the idea of getting a diesel version for alternate fuel use, but bio-diesel tends to get at low temperatures - which is exactly when you want to use a heater! Bio-diesel and vegetable oil work great as internal combustion engine SUMMER and warm-weather fuels, but aren't generally a good fit for winter heating.

    • @GarethWilliamsE
      @GarethWilliamsE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Ben that is extremely helpful. I should do some more research on E85 availability in my area perhaps.

    • @GarethWilliamsE
      @GarethWilliamsE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume there weren't any modifications required to the unit to run on E85? I've heard nothing but bad things about ethanol fuels in small engines like lawn mowers and motorcycles...

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, no modification to run it on E85. Keep in mind also that all this unit does is BURN fuel to make heat. So, some of the concerns of a small engine (such as ignition timing) are completely irrelevant. I've had no trouble at all with it running on E85.

    • @GarethWilliamsE
      @GarethWilliamsE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stupid question maybe, but the iMiEV needs to be turned *on* (either via the 'ignition' key or using the remote) for the cabin to get heated when using one of these units, right? I assume there is no other way for the fan to run... I'm just wondering whether I should buy a unit equipped with a remote control

    Why in the world have you not insulated your garage? Fun video

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin Michael: Ah! A very good question. It's because it's a crummy garage. You can literally see daylight through the walls, and sometimes, if I drop a socket on the floor and rolls and falls into a crack and gets lost forever! The reason why I haven't insulated the garage is because I'm currently working on the paperwork to rebuild the whole thing, including some additional storage space, an insulated concrete slab with hydronic heat, and 5,000 watts of solar on the roof! The garage will keep the car warm in the winter and solar power the car AND the house year-round!

    • @Poepad
      @Poepad 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweet plan, though you could insulate with foam and it would do the trick. I used it before, I was able to heat the whole garage with a 400 watt oil heater. Keep the videos coming love them.

      @BenjaminNelsonX  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Veikra Just do a search through that web page for the gasoline version if you want the gasoline version, or the diesel version if you want the diesel version. No you can't change the software, yes, you can run other fuels in these heaters. This has been discussed on the MyiMiEV forum by several users who are using various versions of these heaters. Use a "step drill" next time, that will not pop through like a normal drill bit.
    Or, of course, put something in between.. Thick metal plate or whatever ;)
