- I decided to jump on the Ranunculus band wagon and join the many compatriots who are knitting up a storm with this amazing pattern.
Why is this channel called the “Variety Show”? When I was a kid (50’s - 60’s) there were all kinds of variety shows on television. The format allowed for diverse content to appeal to a broad audience. Well, my channel does have a few themes, notes for seniors, activities and fun we can still have, camping, scouting out life in an RV (a dream, maybe reality), knitting… If that’s your cup of “tea”, as the saying goes, then stay tuned. You may just find one or two items, or maybe a few, that interest you.
Oh, did I mention that I’m a retired counsellor. My career/profession was full time counselling. After a few years into retirement I actually feel like talking about the subject again… kinda miss it a little, but not enough to go back to work…lol… Cheers!
Nicely done Ranunculi Sue! I am 75 and have been knitting for nearly 70 years. I have made 6 Ranunculus sweaters and have plans for at least 2 more.💜🧶

@@CounselorSue good question Sue. I really like the way each time I knit it with a different yarn it looks completely different. It’s like an old friend that doesn’t mind how I treat it. Yes, I made it in Knit Picks Cotlin yarn, which is part cotton, part linen. I did short sleeves for that one. Thanks for asking!💜🧶

THANK YOU! Thank you so much for your details about the way you reduced the needle size as you progressed with your green Ranunculus and described the way you decreased along the sides. So many people have knits this sweater with beautiful results that are more fitted than the patten, but few have included the details about how they did not, either on TH-cam or Ravelry project notes. Your notes are such a huge help to me as a new sweater knitter. That variegated yarn you've chosen is gorgeous and I've never heard about splitting a yarn like that before. What a great thing to learn!
Lovely Ranunluli! I have knit that pattern up 3 times, too, and have plans for another, now that you’ve shown me one made in I Love This Cotton. I would have thought it would turn out too heavy.
I love my blue Ranunculus top. It is the softest top I have, knit in the “I Love This Cotton”. It’s a worsted weight, 4 ply yarn but light. I’m making one where I have split the yarn using two strands of the 4 ply and it’s working out okay but I think if I do another I’d just leave the yarn as it is. The “I Love This Cotton” makes a lovely Spring, Fall top.

Thank you for the compliment.I have been thinking about you a lot, you’re so lucky to have been out camping. (Could I say, I’m jealous…lol…) We are still waiting for better weather. It’s still too cool in the day and especially at night (freezing weather, like…. 0 degree Celsius,, which is about 32 F.) We’ve had some nice days, as high as 17C, great for hiking, which we’ve done, but not good enough for camping yet. Our first official date is may 21 - 24.
@@CounselorSue - Camping was nice. We had a few days of pretty warm weather, so I got out there with my camper, then it got cold again. My next camping will be May 19-23, so looks like we'll be out there some of the same days. After that, I camp every month thru October usually. Autumn camping is so nice with the trees changing color and the air getting crisp. Makes it extra nice to sit around that campfire with a hot drink. But for now, I'm ready for some warm weather. Hope your hand is healing well. How's it going looking for an RV?
@@Judy-fi7ce I’m working on another post (video) regarding the RV search/idea. I can let you know ahead of time that it’s not turning out to be as financially viable as searching online indicated. We met with an RV dealer and the costs were crazy high, nothing like their website indicated. I don’t know if this means “revise the plan” or place it aside. I haven’t sorted that out yet, but… I know that I still have a lot of fun, good, nice things in life to enjoy, so it’s not a sad note, just a kind of puzzling one.

I too have made several ranunculus. 8 I believe. I have given away several as gifts as they look great on just about everyone and are easy and fast to knit. I love the fingerweight ones in the summer and worsted with sleeves in the winter.

Yup, it may be time to give it a try. I’m working on a video illustrating some of the unique stitches Midori uses to Crete the design in the yoke. I know I had some difficulty figuring things out but once I got it, I asked myself, “what was the trouble?” Watching that upcoming video might also encourage a start on a Ranunculus. I’m also looking at ways to revise the pattern a little, creating a simple yoke using the US#10 needles. If you decide to start one let me know. Cheers!
Hi 👋 fellow 🇨🇦. YT algorithm suggested your channel and for once got it right🤣. I’m a long time knitter too but don’t usually do garments, I’m too chicken but I love your ranunculus(s). I think you are very brave - maybe adventurous is a better word. Your sweaters or rather summer tees look great. I’ve seen that knit by so many but seeing someone in my age range (I’m 67) and your comments about it - well, maybe I’ll have a go (one day 🤷♀️). Glad your hand is getting better. If I can’t knit I’d loose what’s left of my mind 😱. Looking forward to your next creations. Or whatever else pops up 🤩
Hey, nice to meet you. It’s interesting what the YT algorithm decides to put up in front of others (or promote). They highlighted our “Two Seniors Camping” video from last August and it garnered a lot of attention. Still does. it’s at 97,000 views so far and helped us gain new subscribers. Then I put up a video on winding wool and that too did well. And now, this Ranunculus. Basically I’m just putting up videos that follow my inclinations and interests, but there is a theme, being senior, knitting and outdoor activities. Be sure that I knit wherever I go, in the car, on a picnic, in the tent… I think sometimes my husband (now 81) considers himself to be the “knitter widow”. You’re right, I was going crazy not being allowed to knit. I was very bored, even though there were other things I could do, but knitting is everyday. If you decide to try the Ranunculus let me know. Check out my “shawl” videos. Being in menopause (still since I was 48, I’m now 70), I can’t always wear sweaters, but shawls and cotton tops… yes, they work great. Coming up, I want to do a video illustrating the various stitches used in the Ranunculus pattern. It took me a bit to figure things out but once I got it… it was a breeze and so much fun to do. Great idea to split the yarn for a lighter fabric.
Where I live, Orangeville, Ontario, Canada… it’s difficult getting good delicate (DK or fingering weight) cotton. There seems to be a lot of the worsted weight and so… if I really like the cotton and it separates nicely (4 strand, splitting to 2) then… that’s what I do. It’s a lot of work but often I’m watching Sports with my husband and so the splitting becomes a mindless (automatic) action. Happy splitting… if you’re so inclined. Thanks for your comment… I love the ease of use with the pattern, how versatile it is and using US#10 needles makes it all go quickly. I consider myself a beginner knitter because whenever you learn something new it is a “beginning”…lol… I hope to put up a video showing how to knit the various stitches, something I struggles with. I've never knit anything top down. May try finding this pattern.
My first knitted top was done last summer. It was a bottom up. Recently, as you can see by my videos on knitting, I tried the top down. My first top was generous in size, as most people seem to report about the Ranunculus. Each one I knit thereafter got a little more shapely, less size wide wise…lol… The Ranunculus pattern has you knitting up to a certain stitch number. Instead, I tried it on at certain points and reduced the number of overall stitches in the yoke. I think I stopped around 240 stitch count. Then I divided my stitches for sleeves knowing that in past sweaters I need about 35 - 40 stitches for sleeves and roughly 90 for front and about 70 for back (depending upon yarn used). I have discovered that trying it on and measuring and gaining an understanding of how many stitches you need for your own size makes a difference. Definitely, knitting top down (making a yoke) creates a larger sweater in the body. The third Ranunculus I did, the green one in the video, I decreased the stitch # a couple stitches each side about every 8-9 rows, and kept trying it on. I also keep in mind that blocking it can also stretch it length wise and widely wise. Have fun knitting and if you feel inclined let me know how the Ranunculus goes for you. Cheers!

I love 100% cotton. Of course I wanted light weight cotton for a Summer top. In the winter I like Merino wool. That’s my favorite. I like fabrics that are soft on the skin and help the body breathe.

Hey Marty, thank you so much for the accolades…lol… I’m actually working on a video, a kind of unboxing…I have a small hand held rechargeable vacuum that will be useful for my tenting. In my intro I mention you again, mostly because you have such a professional approach (compared to mine)… and when I think of unboxing, of course I think of Marty. Also… amazing… you picked up an iMac for $20… amazing. I used to be an Apple Computer Technician many years ago… had a decimated Apple Store long before Apple decided to have their own dedicated stores. Hi and thanks for this video. I knit my first ranunculus from worsted weight wool 4.5 mm needles and it is too ‘dense’ and balloons out. I am a newbie knitter and want to try splitting the wool. Are there any tips? I noticed my wool is 4 stranded also.
Hi Lise, tips for splitting wool? First tip is “patience”. It definitely takes time. I posted another video about splitting wool and in that I show how I do it. I used a hair clip to hold the main ball of wool while it spins. I have two strands in right hand and two in left and just keep splitting, moving the hair clip on the main ball etc. After I have it all separated that’s when I begin rolling it into a ball. I think the process works well if you can start it, leave it on the floor and go back to it the next day or next. As mentioned, it does take time. Watching a baseball game, or listening to one, I can split wool in a couple evenings. The video where I illustrate splitting the wool is titled “Camping, Knitting, Ranunculus, Hiking, Worry” and the description mentions splitting wool. If you’ve subscribed you’ll see it in the list. Cheers. P.S. I found that knitting the Ranunculus pattern using wool of one color worked best. I knit one with varigated wool and the stitches don’t show up as well. Also, a favorite yarn I love to use is Picnic Cotton from Purl Soho. I’m Canadian and I order from the US. 4-5 50gram balls will do a top for me. It’s a lightweight 100% Pima cotton, really soft. Let me know how it works for you.
PS. Congratulations on being a new knitter and trying the Ranunculus. I think you’re brave. I’m not sure I would have tried a Ranunculus so early on in my beginning knitting days. How did you find mastering the various stitches used?
There are excellent videos on TH-cam by ‘Sun Dragon Tips and Tricks’. Otherwise I would have been completely lost.

Hi. I just joined your channel. Your sweaters are so pretty. I've always wanted to knit a ranunculus, I may have to give it a try. I was wondering how you block your sweat sleeves so they don't have a crease? I just blocked my first knit sweater and it creased.
Welcome to my channel. So nice to see (hear from) you. Blocking… I take some scrap wool/yarn and sew the sleeve opening so that it all stays together, a little easier to keep it all in order. On my green Ranunculus (in the video) I also sewed the bottom edge. I found it rather tedious to keep those edges in place and get them to lay down when blocking so… I sew them closed and remove the yarn when the garment is dry. It works for me. I purchased 4 balls of I Love Cotton at Hobby Lobby. I picked those balls of cotton up while visiting Cheektowaga, which is about 2+ hours drive for me. I used most of the yarn however I modify the Ranunculus pattern. With that yarn, when my stitch count in the yoke reached about 210 that’s when I divided the sleeves and body. I used size 3 as my guide for dividing for sleeves… 72 stitches front and back, 33 for sleeves, (size 3 says…..36, 33, 72, 33, 36). After that I let my stitch count get to about 230 so that the body wouldn’t have a lot of ease (would not be too generous in size). My blue top was definitely an inexpensive one compared to others and it is so soft… In retrospect I now wish that I had purchased more I Love Cotton in different colors. Let me know if you try the pattern.

You are so right. I travel and do a weekend visit to Cheektowaga, 2+ hours drive from my home. I may have mentioned in my videos that in Canada I’ve found it difficult to find good cotton at a good price. The US have such a large population and huge supply and variety, but… in spite of that I have been searching out various 100% cotton that we can get in Canada. There is a company I’ve been trying out, “About Strings” based in BC and they sell through their web site or through Amazon. The green top I highlighted in the video, now finished, is made with the About Strings Totally Cotton. It’s not as soft but at least we have a Canadian option. Each order through Amazon is a “2 Ball” pack and I ordered two making the green Ranunculus. I technically needed (used) three + balls, have lots left over for something…lol… Happy Knitting.

@@yarn_dragon Let me know how it goes. I’ve used two of their yarns so far and I’m thinking About Strings might be my “go to” place for cotton yarns and cotton blends. I’m using a Marino cotton blend right now and it’s wonderful to knit with. Isn’t it amazing how some yarns can be a chore and others such as pleasure to work with.
