Great video. This comparison of different hollow point designs is outstanding. That took a lot of work for you to put this video together. Thank you for your time and effort in making it. This is some great information all wrapped up in a 4 minute clip. Cheers
I was listening to this song yesterday and thought “man, what a good intro that could be for a shooting video”, and today for whatever reason I encountered your video. Amazing.
I've been concealing the same 8 rounds of .45 Remington Golden Saber for 2 years not knowing the results of them. Seeing the results in this video blew my mind. Feel like I've got enough and then then some. Good video thank you
Oh man thank you dude for getting on with the freaking video. So many jag offs sit there and talk about what the heck their going to do. I appreciate it bro.... I mean this.
Nice selection of rounds there. Hard to find, but I now carry 124 Federal HST . Between it or the Gold Dot I think you have the best in any of the main calibers.
Thanks. Wish they had all been 9mm for better comparison, but good work. One think I've noticed after watching dozens of ammo tests...gel, water barrel, and plastic jugs with 9mm is that you can always tell the Federal HST rounds. They all look exactly like the .40 you have here. Probably THE most consistent round available today in terms of penetration and expansion, which is why I use the 124 grain HST in my carry gun. Hopefully I can find some 147 grain before long but they seem to sell out fast.
Tachytely gold are my preferred defense rounds, they hold up to velocity VERY well, are bonded... I load 40 cal gold dots in 10mm 180 gr at 1300 fps and 165 @ 1425 fps(my primary carry load) the 165 holds together a little better because it's designed with the shallow cavity like the 357 Sig 125 gr bullets but all gold dots are great....only bullets I like as much is the xtp because it works well for hunting and defense (so does the gold dot but the xtp is a little better for hunting in my opinion)
grumpy old fart lol no sir not at all, Glock 20 and 40 with kkm barrels, I'm shooting underwood 180 gr gold dot I've personally chronoed at 1301 average from my Glock 20 barrel and 1344 from g40, also underwoods 165 gold dot is avertised at 1400 fps and gets everybit of it..I don't load quite that hot myself, I use bluedot but when I use hot 10mm I use and carry underwood
grumpy old fart yeah that was mainly a issue with the gen 2s and maybe earlier gen 3's, I've shot the same underwood loads I'm mentioned from my stock Glock barrels and it does bulge a bit but so does my 40 sw Sig 229 and 226 with hot loads, main thing is even after you re size the brass the glock "bulge" "smile" whatever you wanna call it which you can do that brass is considerably weaker at the web were it exspanded, then people load a hot load in that same peice of brass and the case let's go, but yeah your definitely right the older Glock 10mms didn't have supported barrels and even the new ones aren't great, I got alot better accuracy from my kkm precision barrels but better velocity from my Glock barrels...
grumpy old fart nothing wrong with that and honestly I like Glocks for what they are and have been carrying, hunting,(use cz in competition) using them for years but I'm getting back into wheel guns again lol, I just replaced my Glock 43 that carry everyday for a s&w model 60-15 3" 357 love it
Perfect expansion is beautiful. It would have been interesting to hear some penetration/muzzle energy numbers and maybe a little commentary being that there were a few distinct bullet failures there.
Good video. Have you tested Freedom Munitions 38 Special 158gr hollow points? The ones loaded with the X-Treme bullets? They have tiny hollow points. Thanks, and I enjoy your vids.
Is there a noticeable, projectile expansion difference, between shooting them in water vs gel? I've done some testing shooting into water, and am wondering if I really need to get gel, or if theres not a lot of difference between the two?
Ive found that the Barnes xpb copper bullets and the critical duty/defense consistently ignore denim and expanded Everytime. Vs traditional copper jacketed lead clogs .. some more than others .. but every brand of jhp I've tried has failed to expand one way or another when involving denim. Even if it's rare. The second best choice aside from solid copper hps in my opinion is the hst and goldensaber BONDED... they usually do really good.
I got a good deal on 10 boxes of 9bple last year at SGAMMO so I've been carrying that, is it a negative that it broke up like that? Looks like that fed hst might be the way to go but I hate to buy all over again.
motherofmusic 2 Those are the exact 3 rounds I have for my G23, 1 box of 50- 180GR and 1 box of 50 - 165GR in each brand. Thinking of getting a box or two of some Underwood and maybe some Crit Defense/ Duty and that’s about as good a set up as you can get for .40 s&w without going all out hand loading etc..
bought 100 rnd of ranger t +P+ (yes +P+) and shot it all through my p938 at the range... sig hold it down super well. cant wait to shoot 100rnd of hornady crit duty through my g30s next month.
So to get them to mushroom, all you did was shoot into jugs of water? I'm trying to replicate the mushroom effect for a Police Themed Wedding - using the mushroomed shells in place of flowers to make the decorations. I'm going to need probably 50 mushroomed shells, and I'd like to do the shooting myself. I've only ever shot FMJ, so instruction would be greatly appreciated.
just line up 4-5 one gallon water jugs and stand about 10 feet away and shoot. But if you're going to need 50 of them it might be better to buy a cheap 55gal drum and fill it with water and blast 50 rounds into it. Best buy two of them and line them up just in case the round penetrates, you can catch them all in the 2nd container
I've never seen a Speer Gold Dot +P+ ever being sold be Speer directly. Is that 9mm 115gr +P+ a Speer bullet loaded by a different company (Underwood maybe)?
Very little. We had another round that passed through multiple water jugs and the gel block with little expansion. Closer to a JHP. Not a metallurgy expert, but either the lead was a harder alloy than the other rounds tested or it wasn't designed to expand much. The guy who bought them was a little disappointed after the gun store sales job...and he switched to HSTs for his defense carry load.
A Robinson That's horrible! They're expensive rounds and you expect them to perform. Guess I'll stick with Hornady's. Thanks for the info. Great job on the vid!
I would like to see these tests be done more real world by adding layers of denim, flannel, leather etc in the bullet path prior to hitting the gel to simulate penetrating layers of clothing.
Kent Weyrauch then go waste your own time and money on your own test. And still, i bet youd say, "oh but you went in through the back pocket and you most likely will be shot in the thigh." Go do your own test and shut up
Kent Weyrauch. Yes! Here in Cali St prison system, inmates would make their own body armor out of highly compressed newspapers to defeat 12 ga Shotguns using weak smaller shot that did not penetrate! Now they use 5.56mm Rugers that WILL PENETRATE!
Kent, he is just showing what each bullet looks like after it hits water. Thats it. Its not meant to show anything to do with bones, levis or anything else. Who runs around wearing [assless] leather chaps besides bikers and cowboys anyways?
you should have thrown in some pdx1 jhp bonded.. Those are awesome.. My rem gs .40 did not expand all crazy like that .45. It worked great but looked like ordinary expansion. Yours looks like a nagasaki hiroshima mushroom expansion.
Hard to beat a Speer Gold Dot, in ANY caliber. I shot a 36g. Mini Mag into a milk jug, and got good expansion from a 6.5" revolver. That's for all of you .22 lovers, out there. The Mini Mags are about the only .22 HP that will expand, from a handgun. The Velocitors won't, but the Stingers might. I haven't tried them.
leos still use the hydro shock in 45acp. still a great round. the hst, is also a good round. you have to consider the gun your using and barrel length.
+Ace Dragon the grain of 38 super is just like 357 sig and with the velocity of 1257.how does it sucks is just old and very expensive and hard to find bullet that's is why is not being use. 38 super once was use to competition.
I know now i picked the correct duty ammo when i was a cop back in the day carrying a HK .40 USP loaded with Speer Gold Dot.....Glad i never had to make wound channels with it.....
Good video but for future reference you may consider giving the same information on each round caliber at a time....EX: .45ACP 230gr. Gold Dot HP std. pressure.....40SW ?gr. HST ? pressure....so on & so forth....you left out some key info on some of them .....what grain? What pressure? ETC....ETC....ETC.... good review though. Keep em comin brother! !!!
+Albert Einstein That performs almost exactly like HST but is bonded for more reliable barrier penetration. But having said that I have yet to have seen an HST come apart...
Que Deus abençoe a todos! Quero ver tentar fazer no Brasil, o preco da arma e bala, alem que é uma bala ponta oca/hollow point, que tem a ideia de se expandir dentro do alvo.
I've shot thousands of rounds of their 9mm. For $8.99 a box it's hard to beat sometimes. I would never use them for actual self defense though. All the low end (S&B, Magtech, PPU, etc) have terribly made self defense bullets, as bad as using montana gold.
At 8.99 a box, its very good target ammo at a reasonable price. Then, i police the brass (and all the other brass people dont seem to value) and reload my own hollowpoint wheel weight lead that opens up like a funnel and doesnt tear open like these little daisies.
Too bad that Remington golden saber doesn't actually open up when it hits flesh. I've actually seen a 9 mil golden saber shot into a deer from 12 feet. And the only visible marks on the round were the rifling marks. Might as well have been a truncated cone Full Metal Jacket.
hmm...6 rounds in .45 and 5 in 9mm and only 2 in .40, with one coming out unrecognizable (not shot again like the other) ? bias or disinterest? not sure which.
.40 S&W Winchester white box 180 grain JHP'S only way to go the most reliable and dependable ammo out there profarmance is right on time after time 💪👍.
Throw you a cotton t shirt and a layer of hoodie, or a layer of leather jacket, even denim.. and you'll see them hollowpoints start to choke.. just that little bit of cloth kills many of em....

I loved your video short and sweet and to the point.
I like the way you made this video. Just showing the aftermath👍🇺🇸
Thanks for the comparisons and your efforts
HST & Gold Dot : awesome expansion
Nice selection of rounds there. Hard to find, but I now carry 124 Federal HST . Between it or the Gold Dot I think you have the best in any of the main calibers.
I carry the same but in my 40, so it's 185 grain
great review! have golden sabres in 230 grain and critical duty in 220 grain +P both in .45 ACP . good to see what kind of damage they'll do
I’m gonna have to get my hands on a box of that 180 grain HST in .40 Great review
Awesome Video. Nice to see A - B- C.... rounds comparisons.
Thanks. Wish they had all been 9mm for better comparison, but good work.

+ytubepuppy You are correct my friend. HST is king at the moment. I carry it in .45 +p with 5.25 inch XDm.
I like the HST'S, they mushroom every time and very big, but many of the others did fine too. Looks like the gold dots do very well too.
The gold dots continue to impress.
Tachytely they look beautifully expanded and consistent wherever they test
Tachytely gold are my preferred defense rounds, they hold up to velocity VERY well, are bonded... Damn that's a beautiful video. Thank you!
Thanks for the research friend, I am curious if you can run a Remington (JHP) 230 grain UMC next time you shoot.
Outstanding. I was wondering if my 9mm +p gold dot was a good choice.
Best intro ever!!!
Perfect expansion is beautiful.
It would have been interesting to hear some penetration/muzzle energy numbers and maybe a little commentary being that there were a few distinct bullet failures there.
I like these videos and I understand it's educational but I think they would be a little better if people would factor in bones
Any info on what barrel length these were shot from?
The best video about this topic! thank you!
Ik I'm late to the party but I really likes ya intro man!!
Why no 45acp ranger testing?
Awesome vid! Since this video is a couple of years old, I just wanted your opinion on the best 9mm SD round? Thanks in advance.
Excellent video! Very informative. Thanks!
Those non bonded Golden Sabers alway separate like that but man, look at the sharp jacket. Talk about cutting edges.
1.HST 2.Gold Dot 3.Ranger t’s 4.pdx1+p

Great video, useful information, thanks, man.

I am looking for hollowpoint bullets 40 Smith and western. 9mm Smith and western. 45 high point and a9mm high point
Lee Burns haha it's Wesson
So the Magtech Gold Dot didn't expand much?

Love my .40s&w in my handgun and I love my 9mm in my carbine. Thats where both rounds belong.
Now that's a test ...thx fr sharing...

Editorial correction. We named the wrong manufacturer on that round.
Wow those expanded 45's are mammoth lol! I carry a G23 with the 180 HST's
