The main reason parents won't buy a horse for their children is money. They are expensive, and there's no getting around that. To those kids in that situation, I suggest looking for as many riding opportunities as possible, like exercising private horses, working at barns outside your usual lesson barn, and networking to find other rides. You can immerse yourself in horses without owning one... and know that one day, sooner than you think, you will be old enough to make the decision to plan for and purchase without relying on someone else.

Yes, I know. If I looked right now I could easily find a giveaway. My apologies for not being clear in my point - I was referring to the entire lifecycle of owning the horse, from buying to eventually no longer owning.

Courtney Marshallick agree. On winter break i went to a barn and got a mare that only i ride. I go there on breaks bc it's far away and also bc of school... but i will train everyday in summer bc I'm going to my grandma's and the barn is 30mins away.

First off, this is one of my favorite videos regarding ‘how to convince your parents to buy you a horse’ ! Great video! I really love your channel!💗
I just wanted to write out a few extra tips from an equestrian who has been riding consistently for 9 years and is just now purchasing a horse!:
    1. Make sure your ready for a horse of your own! I had leased 3 horses before deciding to buy-We actually are in the process of buying my 3rd lease horse-don’t jump into it! I would recommend riding consistently(around twice a week or more) a good 3 years before purchasing! You need to have a good foundation and a strong knowledge of horses before buying anything!
    2. If your parents aren’t listening to what you have to say, WRITE IT OUT. Put a lot of effort and emotion into the letter and convey everything you feel about the situation. Don’t be sloppy!!
    3. Talk to your trainer about it. I was extremely honest with my trainer about how I felt and the situation I was in and we worked on it together. She’s the main reason I’m purchasing after so many years. My parents had just learned to tune out my pleas for a horse of my own because it happened so often. Chances are that they’ll listen to a professional opinion in addition to your own rather that just yours.
    4. Talk to your friends about asking their parents(in addition to themselves) to drop hints whenever your parents are around. My trainers, friends, and friends parents always helped by dropping hints like that!
    5. Talk to your parents about working to help with the cost! It will really show them how much you want it! My trainer and I actually worked out a ‘working student’ position that allowed me and my parents to afford the costs of owning & showing a horse! Most of the time, trainers need help around the barn, so don’t be afraid to offer it! It might help you in the long-or short- run!!
I know that everyone’s situation is different but this is just what helped me convince my parents! Hope this helps some more people!!

When I first started riding I just road a random horse every week😍
    Then I half-leased a horse
    Then I full-leased a horse 😂
Now I’m busy bying my own horse🎉

What would you say to those teenagers who are wanting/saving up for a horse in the future and whilst their parents are supportive, don't want to have to pay for the horse at all? For example my mum is content with the idea of me getting a horse when I'm older, but says it's all on me to pay for and look after and she doesn't want the responsibility weighed down on her. (Which is respectable, of course).

my dad is similar, we have all the land and the barn and i have access to free fencing and anyways the price for board at my barn is very cheap we just don’t have time yet and my dad would be glad to buy me a horse(with me helping out) but he works at a school soo try buying a horse on teacher salary😂

    • @itsssspete
      @itsssspete 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You should stop asking your mum for a horse you just need to wait for the time to be right. You shouldn’t on constantly asking her, just wait until you have enough money and a job to be able to afford getting a horse. Like my mum will help me with boarding and vetting bills etc. My mum wasn’t really a big horse person but I did lots and lots of chores, you should show your parents that your committed and have the time to take care of a horse. Taking care of your own horse is a lot of work so just wait until you get older, when you have the money too.

Some beginner 11 year old rider came to my barn with a green broke three year old quarter horse. She had ridden twice before and could barely trot and her parents bought her a three year old. She’s kinda afraid of him too. She only comes to see him twice a week because she’s on full care board at our barn. We take care of her horse for her and she comes and sees him once a week for her lesson. We’ve told her that she needs to come see him and take care of him. Spend time and bond with him because he’s bonding with some of us more than he is with her and he’s her horse.

I have my own horse but it took 9 years of riding until me and my parents were financially ready to buy a horse. My parents bought the horse but I pay for farrier, vet bills and all of his equipment.😊 it’s hard but it’s worth it and I’ve learned how much responsibilities it takes to own a horse

I've been riding for 5 and a half years and I would love to have a horse and the incredible bond that comes with it. Me and my mom actually ride together, she's the only riding friend I have, none of my friends are interested in horses at all. Im going to try and half lease the horse I ride to get a feel of what its like to have a horse and the responsibility. I don't even know if I will be able to half lease..... But I'm not going to give up and keep going until the day I finally gifted with the honor of having my own horse

I do all of this you guys have suggested and my mom agrees I should get my own horse. My trainer thinks I'm ready and if I remember right she said "I think Ella is ready when you guys are ready" I'm Ella 😁. But aside from that it's how much the horse costs. So I'm making a list of everything I'll need and add up the amount of money and start my own bank account! I hope this will work. Everyone at my barn thinks I'm ready

I have been riding for almost five years now.I had a lease horse, it was really hard because the horse I had was very difficult. I had a horrible fall where I ended up in the ER. Now i'm looking for another lease horse but my parents don't want to lease a horse from another barn. The lady who owns my barn is IMPOSSIBLE to talk to about this and anything else. I asked my parents if I could change barns. They said no. It's hopeless. If anyone has any advice please help me.

You could try to part loan first. I had 3 part loans before my parents would believe I could get a horse on a full loan. It also means that you can maybe find a great yard to keep them at (my horse is at one of my loan pony’s yards because we loved it so much).
If your parents don’t work weekends then try it as a weekend loan. My ponies used to cost between £60-£100 per month but we paid it werkly

When I was little, my parents had horses and my mom grew up riding, so when we moved we had to give them away(I was 5).. We finally moved back to a farm a free years ago, but out landlord won't let us have horses, otherwise we already would have a horse.. Hopefully we'll find a house with more acreage soon that we love so we can get one!!! Awesome video!!!!

The best possible idea is that you could part lease before you full lease. It can show parents that you can do it easily.
If the issue is money, don’t annoy your parents until your family is in a financially stable state. I honestly think that telling them straight out how much horses cost (do the maths yourself) so that they do understand it. If you are confident, you can always ask them if you could have a cheaper horse to bring on

Hi Carly, I am Christine a Certified Equine Appraisr. I go around the country determining the value of horses for many reasons, usually for insurance purposes.
Not knowing what type of facilities you r considering it's hard to say but generally if u work w the stable manager AHEAD OF TIME to work off some of the board by : cleaning stalls, watering, helping unload & stack hay, cleaning leathers. S super way to make money would (ok this w management) be to learn how to braid manes & tails. There is buckets of money in this wonderful art.
If it is a show barn, again first chk w management, take on clients to show prep their horses ($$). If the barn is a show stable and competing horses r owned by the stable, get on their list to do same. Not knowing anything about u except that u desperately want a horse, offer to exercise private or stable owned horses (ok w management). For owners who r unable to be w their horses offer to care for them when the owner can't come out.
I hope I gave u some good ideas. Please keep me informed of your progress. bachout@gmail.com
Good luck & stick w it! It is so w/in your reach!!! 😎❤️🐎

My mum will not get me a horse she's been there done that you know she knows what she's getting into
Which is kinda annoying ik she really would want a horse again she knows famous trainers and jockeys from when she was a jockey people like frankie detorri she rode the gallops with him and trainers like Ed Dunlop so it would be nooo problem getting a horse since they give them to her for free or I could got to tattersalls the horse isn't the problem it's everything else like Farrier sits and vet bills I have livery sorted kinda at my friends we would have them kept outside but we just don't have the money for everything else what should I do

Hey guys I love your videos a lot but I was wondering if you could help me. My barn is pretty far from my house and there is none closer. I only go for a lesson once a week. I have been riding for a long time now and I know how to care for horses, it’s just we don’t have time to drive up and down. So I can’t show my commitment to my parents.

You could also House sit. This one isn’t a job but you could have a garage sale, or sell things on eBay/kijiji.

My parents are worried about the horse getting injured. Any tips on how to get them to stop thinking about the possibility of an injury??

A lot of parents won’t buy there children a horse is because they can’t afford it if they had money they would get you a horse I now it is very upsetting not having you own horse trust me I have been that girl when all your friend have there own horse and can do things you can’t do like going to shows, going horse riding when ever they want and having a bond with a horse but when I got older I stopped caring on what my friends have and I set a goal for my self I can’t get a horse now but I can I will get a horse in the future when I get a good paying job I am 18 I have been riding since I was 5 and I still don’t have my own horse . Some people will never be lucky to get there own horse in there lifetime.

Wherever you train, are any of your like school friends there (besides eachother)? Because I want to start Horse Riding, but i'm scared i'll be alone. ;-; xDD

brooklyn. don’t be afraid to be alone i mean riding is a sport with two team members, you and your horse. so go for it and like me you will probably make friends at a barn if you start riding.

brooklyn. If you truly love horses, focus on the riding and keep your friendships aside. At the barn the first thing to focus on is safety and your riding. Friends are for once you have those two concepts figure out and pursued.

Yeah, so true. I guess I just gotta get over the fact that i'll have no friends there. But i'm ok with that.

Reality check: There are only very few fortunate people who are able to increase the value of a horse! For the rest of us normal people it is just a very creative and satisfying way to burn loads of money... ;-)

Adelaide MeadowDawn if that happened to me, I would make it really obvious that I’m committed to horses. Then maybe say something about leasing or owning a horse. Just slowly go into it in my opinion
