The Coasters were one of the best doo wop groups during the 1950's and were the first group chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They had many hits during the 1950's. Listen to the original recordings of Poison Ivy, Charlie Brown, Young Blood, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Framed, Three Cool Cats and Riot in Cell Block Number 9.
This was a #1 song back in 1958. The Coasters are a pioneer R & B/Doo Wop group inducted both the Grammy & the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Many hits including "Young Blood", "Charlie Brown", "Poison Ivy", and "Along Came Jones".😎
the coasters were a class act in the late 50's. almost all of their songs were of a comic nature and they were considered the clown princes of rock and roll. their greatest hits cd still gets a lot of play for me. truly funny guys and they had great harmony as well. my favorite line is " you just put on your coat and hat and get yourself to the laundromat. and when you're finished doin' that bring in the dog and put out the cat ". the endless demands of your parents or else - you ain't gonna rock and roll this weekend
Oh my gosh!!! The Coasters! Yes!!! This is an exasperated father telling his lazy kid to shape up & do his chores or he's not leaving the house. 1958 - I was 12.
And always a shout-out to King Curtis for that fabulous sax solo. It turned this into a standard showcase saxophone piece under the name "Yakkety Sax."
King Curtis is a very underrated saxophonist in my opinion especially during the early rock and roll era (a lot of guitarists saxophonist and trumpeters in piano players came from old jazz bands and big band and they started playing boogie woogie and what would be later known as rock and roll which was originally called jump blues and rhythm and blues starting in about 1945) so rhythm and blues or jump blues as it was called early on started about 1945 (listen to something like Louis Jordan's Caledonia and you'll see how far back the rock and roll boogie woogie song goes) even though rock and roll was not called rock and roll until about 1956 or 1955 with rock around the clock and also a Little Richard tutti frutti and Lucille and music like that a lot of these rhythm and blues rock and roll players got started about a decade earlier stop the music was called something other than rock and roll until a famous Cleveland Ohio DJ coined the term rock and roll and it's stuck and everybody started calling rhythm and blues rock and roll (Elvis Presley and different people on the Sun records who also played a form of rock and roll but they are not quite as early as Lewis Jordan or Little Richard).
Wikipedia-The song is a "playlet," a word Stoller used for the glimpses into teenage life that characterized the songs Leiber and Stoller wrote and produced. The lyrics describe the listing of household chores to a kid, presumably a teenager, the teenager's response ("yakety yak") and the parents' retort ("don't talk back") - an experience very familiar to a middle-class teenager of the day. Leiber has said the Coasters portrayed "a white kid’s view of a black person’s conception of white society." The serio-comic street-smart "playlets" etched out by the songwriters were sung by the Coasters with a sly, clowning humor, while the tenor saxophone of King Curtis filled in, in the up-tempo doo-wop style. The group was openly "theatrical" in style - they were not pretending to be expressing their own experience
WOWW, I haven't heard that song in years. i forgot all about that and glad you liked it. i think you'd like yummy yummy yummy from ohio express which came out in 68. i really enjoy watching your reactions.
Not sure where 1988 came into it but yeah this is from the late 50s and it was a huge huge hit, and they also had another one around the same time that I bet you would love, Charlie Brown.
From the 40s to the 60s, any song like this, that had no solid subject matter, was known as 'novelty' songs. The original version of Yakety Yak was made by the Coasters in 1958, and was a hit on radio back then.
My son and I used to sing along with this when, he was little. I briefly lived near the gentleman singing the "Dont talk back" part he was much shorter than he appears in this performance.
You done it again! Another childhood favorite tune. So many Oldies and so little time! Definitely check out their "Charlie Brown" tune about "picked on" outcast at a school - another "fun" type song with more spoken type bass parts.
This is dad telling kid, do your chores, take out the trash, get the paper, clean your room. Yakety Yak represent the Kid, Aww Dad, im watching the tv, im playing, im about to go out. Dad: Dont Talk Back!!
There was a cartoon called Yakety Yak and used this song as the theme song. However, it was from the early 2000s and only ran 1 season. (I think) it was about a pre-teen Yak who wanted to be a stand up comedian and his best friend was another kid who was a pinapple. Shocked it didn't last long. 😂
In the 1950's there were lot's of novelty songs, probably mostly aimed at young teenagers. Songs like: Purple people eater, Witch doctor, Monster mash, Alley Oop, Charlie Brown, Chantilly Lace, Giddy up a ding dong among many others.
Definitely listen to the studio recording. This was decent, but you get to hear how it was meant to be. Another similar time period, and sound song is "Summertime Blues".
Original sax solo by the wonderful King Curtis. The original is at a much slower tempo. Do check it out. Written by Lieber and Stoller, a songwriting duo from New York who wrote smash hits for a heap of Black artists.
This song was in the movie the great outdoors with John Candy that was the first time I heard it and absolutely loved it the coasters have a lot of excellent music
This is performed here in1988 as a 30 year anniversary. Part of the late 50s/ early 60s "do wop", Philly style, music. Since the movie Grease, in1977, the US had a lot of nostalgia a acts revive the" roots rock" era.
Yes 1988 World Series. Kurt Gibson’s home run in game one and the Dodgers went on to win the World Series. But for this song this was recorded in the 1950’s. You need to check out more of their song.
Now that you heard the Sax riff, here is what it grew up to become. This is "Yakety Sax," but most know it better as : The Benny Hill song... th-cam.com/video/ZnHmskwqCCQ/w-d-xo.html
Tiny toons did a music video for this song for one episode along with two other songs. I think one was Constantinople and do you love me for a music video style episode. I know they also did particle man. But that was completely after the fact as it was released with permission from the artists except Yakkity Yak as that entered public domain by the time tiny toons got it.
B - Welcome to the '50s! Silly, fun songs were very very popular...and The Coasters were masters at it! They didn't do flashy stage shows...the lyrics were the main event...so for your 2nd reaction the The Coasters, try the lyric video of their 1959 hit "Poison Ivy" ( th-cam.com/video/gG11rVMQxDU/w-d-xo.html ) "Late at night while you're sleepin', Poison Ivy comes a creepin' arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound...." 🙂
Love Poison Ivy! Other songs in that vein are "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah," "Monster Mash," "Haunted House" and "Witch Doctor" (Alvin & the Chipmunks). ETA: Oh, and "They're Coming to Take Me Away (Ha Ha)"
In the late 50s and early 60s, the Coasters and the Olympics were very popular, and they did fun songs. This version is not as good as the original. Other fun songs by these type of groups were BIG BOY PETE, CHARLIE BROWN, POISON IVY, ALONG CAME JONES, YOUNG BLOOD, LOVE POTION #9 (best version by the Clovers), LITTLE DARLIN' by the Diamonds, and many more. This old timer sure loved these songs-- laying in the sun on the beach listening to them over the transistor radio.
Welcome to the music of my life. It was just a song. They are telling the kid to get the work done and don't mouth off about it or you are not going out with your friends.
You have to understand parents back then. I remember running out to jump in my car and drive to class at junior college. There was a note taped to my steering wheel that read “your coil wire is in the dog food container. Feed the dogs while you are there.” Man do I miss my Dad. He used to also sing “Bip bip bip bip bip bip doo doo doo do Get a Job!” Like the Coasters or Sha-na-na or whoever sang it would do.
1:30 - Britt: This song sounds cartoonish. My mind: th-cam.com/video/IUOV70XWIEE/w-d-xo.html 2:39 - The previous link would help you get the context. The song is a parent telling their teen that they have to do all their chores before they can go out and have fun. 'Yackety-Yak' is the teen arguing with him. The Coasters originally released this song in 1959, at the end of Doo-Wop and the beginning of Motown. They made a lot of songs that leaned into the comedic side. This live recording is a bit 'off' from the original, so you should give that a chance. The link I gave you is from when the 80s cartoon Tiny Toon Adventures did a music video for it (they did a couple 'MTV' episodes). (Excuse the video quality. The poster cut frames out to bypass copyright).
OK. Now you need to do "Yakety Ax" with Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins from their joint album "Neck and Neck." Two of the best guitar pickers that ever played.
The Coasters always did funny songs and everyone loved them.even the Beatles used two of their songs, Three Cool Cats, and Young Blood, on an audition tape for Decca Rcoords, tin January 1962, the company who turned them down, like morons.
Ok, this one reminds me of some others you check out. ERNIE K.DOE - ''MOTHER IN LAW'', also The Coasters, "Charlie Brown", and Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs - "Little Red Riding Hood"
Hey Mrs.Britt, I've got a potential "PDC" member...try reacting to Geoff Castanelli singing 16 tons !! I promise not to steer you wrong ! {I just hope your husband don't get upset with me for guiding you towards this song} !!
Simpler time. Novelty songs like this often make a ton of money. That's why so many people did them. George Jones' "White Lighting" is a different style, but same gimmick. "Elviria" by the Oak Ridge Boys is another one.
And this is the danger of doing live recording reactions. The sound is bad, possibly (in this case, definitely) out of date, and creates more questions than it may answer. I know the tradeoff is that they are less likely to get flagged, but you sometimes have to take that risk. Or you end up with something like this. I recommend that you find the studio recording and listen to it. You don't have to react to it, but definitely listen to it. It's WAY better than this.
My parents had several albums of "silly songs" that I used to love to listen to when I was a kid in the '70s. This was one of a few Coasters songs on them that I always enjoyed. Now, every time I hear the song, I can't help but think of the movie 'Twins' and this hilarious scene of Arnold Schwarzenegger singing it. th-cam.com/video/99kssHaD_yY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PJsf6GTZBOiNBg3I
They're singing about something that doesn't happen anymore. Teenagers don't leave the house to hang out with your friends, until your CHORES are done. Yes there was a time when all children had chores around the house, it was part of being a family. A tradition that needs to come back and DON"T sass back at me when I tell you to do something.
What? "Is this real music???" Wow! What an insult!! Britt: Glad you liked this 1988 video but you need to go back another 30 years plus to hear their original recordings in all their glory. Read their Wikipedia entry for basic guidance. My vote is for "Along Came Jones" a spoof on the ubiquitous Western, a staple of late 1950s TV th-cam.com/video/d1A3psWnbSc/w-d-xo.html Aside: I still have a copy of "Yakety Yak" (London HL-E 8665) on 78 !! Can't play it as my current turntable hasn't got that speed 😞 My LP and mp3 version suffice though.🤩
Nope, Yakety-Yak was a stand-a-lone huge hit in 1958 for The Coasters, the first of many. Now you need to listen to The Silhouettes' "Get A Job." Another great rock/R&B song. As I mentioned in a comment earlier that somehow got deleted, these two songs plus Ray Charles "Night Time is the Right Time" show you the R&B/Jazz roots coming in to form a major strand, along with rockabilly, of the developing rock and roll. That Ray Charles song is right here (best audio): th-cam.com/video/Buan-HXlP2g/w-d-xo.html And after that you need to see this 2-minute clip from the Cosby Show, where the Huxtables lip-sync the song for the Huxtable grandparents. Worth doing a combined reaction along with the Ray Charles original: th-cam.com/video/sJtK0vvCPT0/w-d-xo.html
This is 1950's and is a huge part of music history - you need to do some research and understand how popular music evolved and the different styles which were loved at the time.
Disappointed that you didn't (get it) with this song. However, I understand, considering your young age. I would like to see you react to another silly song to see if you get it. ( May the bird of paradise fly up your nose). Yes, that is the name of the song, thanks.
@Britt Reacts Hi ❤Britt!😀 (SWEET AND ALWAYS VERY BEAUTIFUL TO ME!)🌹🌹🌹❤️🔥 I PRAY YOU HAD AN AWESOME VALENTINE’S DAY! AND YOU WERE ABLE TO THOROUGHLY RELAX, ENJOY BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER IN A ROMANTIC WAY WITH THE WIND TO LOVE I AND I WANT TO COVER YOUR VIDEOS AND SEND TO PREPARE FOR YOU AND ASKED THE LORD TO BLESS YOU AND GIVE YOU HUGS AND KISSES FROM MY HEART TO YOUR HEART TO MAKE YOUR DAY ALL THE MORE BEAUTIFUL BRING TO MIND MEMORIES OF GOOD TIMES OF VALENTINES THAT EVEN RELATIVES FROM THE PAST MAY HAVE CALLED YOU UPSET I JUST WANT TO WISH MY BEAUTIFUL GIRL A HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY. I WANNA WISH MY FRIEND. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY LIKE THAT THAT WOULD MAKE YOU ALL HAPPIER WHEN YOU THINK OF THEM MAY NOT BE WITH YOU IN THIS LIFE ANYMORE FOR WHATEVER REASON THE MEMORY OF THEM BRING BEAUTY TO YOUR DAY AND MAKE YOU HAPPY ANOTHER WAY ONLY THE LORD KNOWS. It was not written for a cartoon even slightly it was written in 1958 release in 1959 is about the parents getting their child their children to take care of their chores before they go out with their friends and not to give them lip talking back to them swearing under the breath complaining about it do your chores before you leave this house your father is happy. He knows what cooks, don’t give me no dirty looks get your chores. Tell your friends you cannot go out Friday night take care of your chores in the movie twins with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito who I’ve grown to not like very much, nevertheless Danny DeVito. Movie, they were a pair of twins, born from a petri dish tube babies and they were trying to create genetically engineered perfect human being in every way didn’t expect to have twins Arnold Schwarzenegger was this genetically perfect human being how many in educated highly impressionable like a child and curious, he learns that he has a twin he wants to go find him so he leaves this paradise type islands situation in the world and trippy is singing this song on the airplane through a walk singing lovely ab border playing. Don’t talk back!! The song is about the parents getting their kids to do their chores and not have any lip not to have any arguments not to have any talking just do your chores!
Not in 1988 it was recorded in 1958 about a parent telling his kid, “no chores, no allowance”.
I think it was a PBS fund drive performance.
Looks like a later performance.
The Coasters were one of the best doo wop groups during the 1950's and were the first group chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They had many hits during the 1950's. This song was played on the radio every morning while i was getting ready for school in the morning...... yes i am old
I can relate, I’m old too.
Wikipedia-The song is a "playlet," a word Stoller used for the glimpses into teenage life that characterized the songs Leiber and Stoller wrote and produced. Don’t talk back 👍🏼😊to your folks..😊
The song's theme is parent talking to teen. Kind of, 'Do your chores or stay home.'
Two other funny songs by the Coasters were Charlie Brown and Poison Ivy. Poisin Ivy was my favorite.
Yakety Yak = sass, back talk and also the style of early rock and roll sax heard in this song
These guy were just fantastic.
WOWW, I haven't heard that song in years. i forgot all about that and glad you liked it. i think you'd like yummy yummy yummy from ohio express which came out in 68. i really enjoy watching your reactions.

U crack me up if I'm having a hard day u put a smile on my face with your reactions thank you
This was probably a 30 year anniversary performance. Look at their age. Listen to the studio version for clearer lyrics 😊❤
I have this song on 45. It was their only number 1 song. They had a lot of fun songs: Poison Ivy, Along Came Jones, Charlie Brown.
Dad told me in the old days, 1940s that style of saxophone playing was called yackety-sax
This was before my time but it was my mothers so i know all the music from this era by heart most of them.
From the 40s to the 60s, any song like this, that had no solid subject matter, was known as 'novelty' songs. The original version of Yakety Yak was made by the Coasters in 1958, and was a hit on radio back then.

R & b I think, from late 50s early 60s other songs serching and Charlie Brown. Great reaction
Teenage angst is all it's about. Kids don't want to be told what to do.
Boots Randolph on sax is the best
TEENAGER TALKING BACK TO PARENTS IN THE 50'S!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEFORE MOTOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is dad telling kid, do your chores, take out the trash, get the paper, clean your room. Yakety Yak represent the Kid, Aww Dad, im watching the tv, im playing, im about to go out. Dad: Dont Talk Back!!
The Coasters put out some awesome classics.

This song was in the movie the great outdoors with John Candy that was the first time I heard it and absolutely loved it the coasters have a lot of excellent music
You'll find this on the great outdoors with John Candy and Dan Aykroyd

This was one of my favorite songs as a kid.
It *is* cartoonish, playful and fun. That was the Coasters!
Yes it was meant to be funny and witty and was an original track for this group.
I'm 72 and this was a hit when I was a kid (1958) me born 1952.
featured in the Spielberg film - Always
Yes 1988 World Series. Kurt Gibson’s home run in game one and the Dodgers went on to win the World Series. But for this song this was recorded in the 1950’s. You need to check out more of their song.
This is 50's Rock n Roll...the original recording is awesome.
From the hay day of the sax solo, top 40 radio in the 50's, teasing about parents trying to keep their kids in line.
As a tween at the time , I loved this song!
Benny Hill would be proud!
I sing this to my kids all the time. "Don't talk back"!!!
Now that you heard the Sax riff, here is what it grew up to become. This is "Yakety Sax," but most know it better as : The Benny Hill song...

Just go with the flow
really good tune
Love this reaction 😂👍🏼
It's about a parent telling his teen what it is. And yes door whoop! 1958, I was 11.

@@sallyphillips9175 I wanted to include a recommendation for "Love Potion #9", but The Coasters only covered that song.

Check out "Along Came Jones"
Check out some of their other works. "Charlie Brown" is another classic of theirs. Buck Owens covered it and did a good job of it too.
Do I've been a ' searchin
Do Searchin...it's a good one..
You have to understand parents back then. I remember running out to jump in my car and drive to class at junior college. OK. Now you need to do "Yakety Ax" with Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins from their joint album "Neck and Neck." Two of the best guitar pickers that ever played.
1988 was a special year, I remember It well, but this group (and song) was sooo much earlier in time...lol!😂😂😂
30 years earlier...so the parents in '88 were the kids in '58 who had to "...Get all that garbage out of sight,
or you don't go out Friday night!"
The Coasters always did funny songs and everyone loved them.even the Beatles used two of their songs, Three Cool Cats, and Young Blood, on an audition tape for Decca Rcoords, tin January 1962, the company who turned them down, like morons.
Chuck Berry - My Ding-a-ling, cute little playful song
Great 50s song!! 😅
Now listen to Mother-in-Law by Ernie K. Doe. (1961) Some of the comments on it had me rolling on the floor.
Ok, this one reminds me of some others you check out. ERNIE K.DOE - ''MOTHER IN LAW'', also The Coasters, "Charlie Brown", and Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs - "Little Red Riding Hood"
If you love the Saxophone, check out Boots Randolph.
Searchin, Poison Ivy. Little Egypt, Young Blood, Charlie Brown, The Coasters ruled in the 50s.
Watch or listen to the original.
My mother used to sing this at me lol
Yes, Doo Wap. Just upbeat and comedic elements added. There was a 1963 instrumental titled "Yakety Sax" using the same type Sax playing.
Hey Mrs.Britt, I've got a potential "PDC" member...try reacting to Geoff Castanelli singing 16 tons !! I promise not to steer you wrong ! {I just hope your husband don't get upset with me for guiding you towards this song} !!
It was targeted at the newly emerging teenage market of the '50s by Leiber-
Stoller and hit the target.
Definitely check out Poison Ivy and Charlie Brown by the Coasters
Spoof on how the kids hear their parents talk to them in the late 50's, early 60's
For The Great Outdoors movie!

Poison Ivy is another great hit from them in this same vein.
They're singing about something that doesn't happen anymore. Teenagers don't leave the house to hang out with your friends, until your CHORES are done. kids had chores to do if they wanted privileges like going out Fri night and sass was not allowed!
What? "Is this real music???" Wow! What an insult!!
Britt: Glad you liked this 1988 video but you need to go back another 30 years plus to hear their original recordings in all their glory. Read their Wikipedia entry for basic guidance.
My vote is for "Along Came Jones" a spoof on the ubiquitous Western, a staple of late 1950s TV th-cam.com/video/d1A3psWnbSc/w-d-xo.html
Aside: I still have a copy of "Yakety Yak" (London HL-E 8665) on 78 !!
That Ray Charles song is right here (best audio):

And after that you need to see this 2-minute clip from the Cosby Show, where the Huxtables lip-sync the song for the Huxtable grandparents. Worth doing a combined reaction along with the Ray Charles original:

You should play this song to your children
😎🤓😬
Charlie Brown is a good one too
😂😂😂❤❤❤😁
Do your chores or you ain't goin' nowhere this weekend!
This is 1950's and is a huge part of music history - you need to do some research and understand how popular music evolved and the different styles which were loved at the time.
You will like "Splish splash " Not sure the name of the group.
Bobby Darin
@Cookies_crumbs hey thanks 😊
Disappointed that you didn't (get it) with this song. However, I understand, considering your young age. I would like to see you react to another silly song to see if you get it. ( May the bird of paradise fly up your nose). Yes, that is the name of the song, thanks.
Studio version is best.
