Julius Caesar also used the hidden flank. Speaking of Caesar, there's an obscure tactic he wrote about once while fighting in Germany. The Germans would use infantry separated into small groups in a shield wall with cavalry behind them for hit and run. In Total War it would probably be something like 2-3 infantry and 1 cavalry in each group. Whether they charged through gaps or around the flanks wasn't specified. He said it was tricky for him to beat. The Spanish/Holy Roman Empire under the Hapsburgs also may have tried something similar once or twice during the pike and shot era some have dubbed 'German style'. Also during that era, Sweden tried something like that against the Polish but were caught out of formation and wiped out.
Oh yeah I recall reading that he used that tactic as well, I'll have to look into that more I love Roman history! And that sounds really interesting I guess they would use the Infantry as protection before charging out at opportune moments? Sounds similar to the Byzantine Square, just on a smaller more spread out style? Cheers Bello I've got some fun stuff to look into now thanks to you!
brilliant video! I remember suggesting the Greek/Byzantine force composition and tactics and I'm glad to see it showing up here with the elves. Very good work too showing the tactics off.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! I've got another video I'm planning because I do want to cover the Byzantine Square as well, the Elves seem like a perfect fit too. Cheers bro!
Loved the video! Huge fan of the format, and I have commented a few times :) I would suggest for next time that using on screen arrows and lines (red, blue, green) would help people understand visually what you mean when you refer to flanks, gaps, etc. Nonetheless, very helpful and nicely edited video!
Thanks so much brother I really appreciate it and I’m super glad you’ve been enjoying the vids! That is a great idea, I’ve been trying to figure out how to draw those coloured lines in the replays, haven’t quite gotten there yet but I’ll keep that in mind and try and throw some indicators in post. Cheers bud!
Interesting that you made a video about Alexander the great's strategies and tactics in total war Warhammer, cause I was thinking about using all of his tactics and strategies while playing as both the empire and the dwarfs, both of those factions are good choices for using his strategies and tactics right?@@MalleusGaming57
@@Brett-uq4tz I’d say they both could yeah but Empire would probably be much better suited since they have powerful heavy cavalry. For Dwarfs their closest equivalent would be Slayers, but I suppose you could always recruit some Allied Cavalry. In general though I’d say give it a shot with both and let me know how it works out! Cheers bud!
As a constructive critique, TW3 has a overhead map mode that displays the regiments similarly to how military tactical maps are drawn in textbooks. Switching between the textbook illustration of the historical example, the TW3 Overhead Map versions of you arranging the maneuver and the Game-play footage of the tactic being employed will help give visual queues of what you're describing. It gun be alot of editing tho I think.
Thanks so much bro I appreciate the suggestion! I'll definitely look into trying that out, I've never really made much use of the Tactical Cam before but you're right it could definitely add in some more visual interest and hopefully clarity. Cheers bro thank you!
I would like to see you tackle the Oblique order from classical antiquity - specifically the Greek states prior the birth of Alexander. I know it may seem simple on paper, but that battle tactic alone is worth revisiting and reviewing since it was essentially the birth of of Hidden Flank.
That sounds like a great idea I'll definitely look into that! I think I touched upon it a bit in my Infantry Tactics video but I'd love to revisit it more in depth. Cheers bro thanks!
@@MalleusGaming57 Yeah you did, but you haven't done an in-depth look about it. I know there are a lot of youtube videos discussing the Oblique Order itself in a historical/real-life practical situations, but it wouldn't hurt to see its implementation in a fantasy setting. Since you could make the argument that both Hammer & Anvil as well as Oblique Order are the grandparents of future Flanking maneuvers in our world. Because sometimes the simplest tactics are the ones that wins a battle, because most of the time your enemies will think of more complex ways to defeat you.
Nice one, very informative. That false flank tactic would work well with Tomb Kings I think, using a combo of Sepulchral stalkers and necropolis knights.
cool video man, can you make more video about use of chariot and war machine. Im new to the game, and always use those war machine or whatever heavy unit to charge the enemy and ending up the unit always die first 😂
Yeah that sounds like fun! I’ve been thinking about covering more Roman stuff, and covering Hannibal and the Carthaginians would certainly go hand in hand with that
One major issue I have with your gunpowder formations is that they seem to rely on you having the ranged advantage. Trying to use them as the Dwarfs against the Wood Elves for example is just asking for a bad time. Could you make a video on formations when you are outranged? All of the formations are great against melee units and cavalry and such but if they have 10 ranged units with more range than me I am kinda screwed.
I'll definitely look into it, at the very least too I wanna kick some Wood Elf butt they're so frustrating haha I'd imagine artillery/cavalry will have to pull some more weight in engagements such as those
Cavalry is so crap in this game compared to historical total wars. Even a rear charge by one of the best highest charge bonus cavalry does so little damage against basic infantry.
I’ve been tempted to play some more Medieval 2 lately (mainly the Divide and Conquer Lord of the Rings mod) I miss the cavalry charges from that, they felt so impactful
(Tyrion watching Alexander the Great kill Persians)
"I gotta learn to fight like that."
Lmao man I’d really like to think that even Tyrion would be inspired by Alexander the Great

@@MalleusGaming57 anytime.
and yeah, the Germans used it in a line formation and the HRE used the cav to protect the guns
Great video! Fun fact, Alexander's date of death is actually today (2229 years ago)
Omg that is crazy! It's hard to believe sometimes that we're still talking about a man who lived over 2 millennia ago isn't it? Cheers bro!

Yay Tyrion vs Malekith. I definitely did not expect this when I asked for a Tyrion vs Malekith video.
Malekith: muahaha i slept with your girl
Tyrion : I slept with your mom
Haha they're quite the thematic pairing, Light vs Dark, Heirs of Aenarion, Wearers of Big Hats!

Yes, Sepulchral Stalkers would be perfect for this role. I've always struggled with finding a good use for them to maximize their anti-large
Omg how did I miss that?! Yes Sepulchral Stalkers with Necropolis Knights thats such a good pairing, even thematically it fits so well!
Comment for the algorithm. Fantastic content!

Money, dude!

Also, Alexander the Great was Macedonian, not Greek
Thanks bro glad you enjoyed it! And yeah that was minor oversight on my part, I tend to conflate the two together but yeah Macedon was distinct.
@@MalleusGaming57 I just found your channel, big fan!
