I met Ray Manzarek in the early 80s. He was touring and playing piano behind a poet named Michael(?) McClure. What a musician! There was an audience of maybe 100 people, so I was able to hang out after the show and talk to him. Very congenial dude.
Michael McClure was a pretty important figure in art circles during the 60s/70s. He was a friend of Jim’s, too. Also acted, e.g., The Hired Hand, which is an outstanding film.
@@jamesjames9275 Michael McClure was a San Fran beat poet who wrote the original version of "Mercedes Benz." Janis in a bar near the Capital Theater waiting to go on, was drinking with Bob Neuwirth, Geraldine Page and Rip Torn (seriously!) and she and Neuwirth started singing Benz but with a new lyric or two that janis made up on the spot (the Dialing For Dollars bit). She went on stage that night and sang it for the first time, mostly a capella. She later called McClure (they were friends) to get his permission to record it. Think he passed away recently
Hard to think of a better album (Strange Days) ending song. Also a great one to end a concert with. The discordant notes Robbie played on this one fit the song perfectly.
Another great video. Great lesson and you always pick some great tunes that I don’t see kicking round too much elsewhere. Love the Doors and Robbie’s playing.
Wow! Fantastic! As you were playing, I could almost hear Ray's Vox Continental playing in the song, and everything that makes the song - you got me in a Doors mood!
I saw them at the Isle of Wight the Doors, Jimi, Blind Owl a lot of casualties. I thought Robbie's guitar was out of tune for a lot of it. but it was still great.
I'll have to politely disagree with you about the Doors slightly getting past their prime. I actually feel they never fully hit their potential. I think they might have had a few stale moments. But listening to An American Prayer tells us that if Mr> Morrison had've kept it together, the band was moving forward. And the needed a bass player. The Ghost Song from that album or A Feast of Friends. The band had a lot more in the tank. I think Ray moving away from that ever present Rhodes sounds would've been the way forward - anyway my 2 cents. Thanks for posting this!
Yes, but they didn't keep going (I don’t consider the post-Jim albums to be true Doors albums). Jim died. So their career had a trajectory. The albums were never an issue, LA Woman is fantastic. But the live performances really started to suffer after '68, in my opinion.
Hey, man, good song choice. Is this unchartered territory for you? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do a Doors tune. I always had a hard time with Doors songs because of Robby kriegers finger picking style...it’s hard to duplicate with a pic. You have it down, though. Rock on!

This is an awesome, obscure choice and I love it all

Love the Doors and Robbie’s playing.
My favorite Doors song. I dig that pickup setup on your SG, very Greeny/Moore
Totally agree with you JJ. It is one of my favorite Doors tune as well. A real psychedelic classic. Looking forward to play it. cheers!👍👍👍
4 years in and they were “A little past their prime!” That’s what hard livin does.

Great lesson video, thanks for posting this video!
Jimmy Jim,
Glad you're feeling better.
Come to Maine for a visit.
Peace.
I find it interesting that the blues was actually the "hip" thing to play during that mid 60's stretch.
Great one, sir!
Oh lord the Doors 🤩
Thank you!

No, it’s Robbie. Lonnie Mack played bass on Roadhouse Blues, though.

Yes you have. My bad...I can’t remember anything anymore, lol.

This and Soul Kitchen are kinda similar, at least the intro.
Very similar.

L.A. Woman just turned 50!!! Yes, it's on strange days...but still. You're all old LOL!
