    Twenty years ago I quit smoking. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. Cold turkey. One of the best decisions I've ever made ( smoking broccoli for fifty years ). Good luck Steve. You'll make because you're a survivor. Thank you and Tim for an enjoyable episode.

    Loved the show in a location theme. You worried about the noise Tim but to be honest it shows more of the reality of life in Thailand (my belief).That is amazing Steve. Keep up the good work. Been there and done that. Bloody difficult to quit. Please don't do what I did on holiday and start a little bit. It got me again. The whole process of quitting starts again believe me.

    Tim - loved your crawfish story. I spent a week in Gulfport/Long Beach, Mississippi every year for 4 years (until Katrina hit) for work. Every night after sales meetings (when we didn't go to New Orleans), the obligatory evenings were spent drinking and going through giant bowels of crawfish. Two things I learned on my first visit: don't wear nice clothes to the bar as there will be crawfish, and they don't (didn't) sell liquor at stores on Sundays. Back in those travelling days, when I would've won the Olympics at drinking, I would always buy a bottle of rum to keep in my hotel room for the pre-night and return back solo moments. I arrived on a Sunday, went to a liquor store and there were two men sitting on the porch - sitting on rocking chairs (no kidding!) and wearing overalls. I asked if the store was open and the big guy got up, put his thumbs through the suspenders and said this to me: "You can't buy alcohol in the state of Mississippi on a Sunday, boy." I'll never forget that...the only thing missing was him turning his head and spitting...

    • @roystevenson1375
      @roystevenson1375 ปีที่แล้ว

      And when they did sell it the alcohol content of the beer in Mississippi was a wicked 2 %

    • @brettborder
      @brettborder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roystevenson1375 lol - yes, I remember some of my Canadian compatriots and sales people from the UK, Australia, and South Africa lamenting on the beers there...if I recall correctly, American beer is generally weaker at 4% or less to begin with so, from what you've said, it must have been really light. Fortunately, my body can't tolerate too much beer except Japanese, Mexican, and Venezuelan (so far), so I remain a rum drinker since my teens.

    I hope things work out for Steve - always a worry with medical issues in Thailand. Costs of course, but also getting the right things done by the right doctor/hospital. Overall the medical services in Thailand are good - but they aint free for Expats. Any other old guys thinking of going to live in Thailand - get yourself prepared for medical issues when you hit mid-late 60s. Whether it is insurance, or making a slush fund (my method), and having a Plan B (go home). Old guys need some sort of plan about it because it will happen eventually. Steve is not the only Expat who has trouble paying for medical problems - not the first and will not be the last. It is one of the reasons some media pundits and Thai 'spokespeople' (for insurance industry?) are suggesting they make health insurance mandatory for all long term Visas - new ones and annual extensions. A plan for health costs as we get older is just like having a Will - no one really wants to have one but we all should have one.

    • @steverosse
      @steverosse ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL! Dude, I love your optimism. As it happens, I don't have a will, either. What would I leave, and to whom? I own nothing except an old laptop computer and some checkered shirts. My daughter wants nothing to do with me and my son already has everything he needs, or wants. By far the odds are that I will either die of my third sudden STEMI heart attack or die on a motorcycle. Either way, insurance won't be useful. So I'm going to keep plodding along as I am. But I do thank you for your advice.

      @@steverossegreat!! Many of the government hospitals are really good. In Udon Thani they have a special desk for forigner waiting room with Aircon 555...
      Anyway, you aren't 3-4 hours in a queue waiting and prices are great.
      For my checkups, x-ray and blood work just 10% from BKK hospital.

    Steve - A quick comment about Boontong's: it doesn't only exist in your mind. It's out there. You put it out there. Once you shared it, it became real. It lives in other people's imaginations, discussions, and thoughts. Without splitting hairs or going down an existential rabbit hole, Boontong's exists in the same way as the Daily Bugle in New York, or even Wayne Manor in Gotham City.

    Steve, I reckon you could tell yourself yourself that you were waiting for a health crisis IN Thailand for this opportunity. Now you’re in your dream retirement location, I believe getting past the 6 months mark of abstinence will be easier. Because, after the physical addiction is gone, it’s purely psychological (unless you re feed the beast by reigniting those nicotine receptors by smoking). And… psychologically you’re way better primed to deal with abstinence now you’re in Thai Muang. Just my 2 cents worth. I reckon you’ll win this. However, when you go to Phuket for your millionaire 3 days … you may want to avoid smokers… maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that you need to save up for this hernia operation? All the best. Massive golf clap on 2 weeks. Worst part is over.

    • @steverosse
      @steverosse ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Living with a Thai partner will hinder anybody's study of the Thai language. There's absolutely no benefit for her in you learning any Thai, and a whole fistful of drawbacks: if you speak Thai you can understand when she talks about you with her friends and family. You can understand when her friends and family talk about her. And if you speak Thai you need her less. Also if you study Thai seriously you'll be constantly asking her to tell you how to say things, and who needs that aggravation. Sometimes Thai partners will find ways to actively scuttle a farang's attempts to learn Thai, but even if they don't they'll never really help much. It's rare to find a farang with a Thai partner who speaks Thai well. They're out there, but they're rare.

      Totally agree, many family and friends are shocked that I am not fluent in Thai after twenty years in the country, but it wasn't through ignorance it was that obstacle were put in my way. I bought and studied Thai language in all sorts of media, books, videos, online even interactive AI lessons, where I would score highly, all to no avail. The root problem was I could speak thai but couldn't understand it, as spoken by Thai people! @@steverosse

    Hey Tim, I've been suffering from Sciatica for 15 years and drugs never work on nerves except for very strong anti-inflammatories.... the BEST thing for Sciatica , imo, is gentle stretching yoga. Luckily you're surrounded by yoga bunnies I'm sure you can find a class ;)!

    Hey Steve I did the cold Turkey too. I found having a pack of ciggies in in the car allowed me to go through the motions of reaching for them asking myself, do I really want one? Or more to the point do I need one. Allowed me to get over that reach for one habit. I still crave them on occasion but the craving is more of a rose tinted memory, as knowing the reality of smelling like and ashtray and actually smoking one after 6 months was akin to licking an ashtray clean. Smoking Broccili probably doesn't help. Perhaps using said veggie in baking products would allow that clean break you are seeking. It is will power and it can be a challenge... took me 5 times to break it.

    I enjoy the restaurant venue from time to time as it creates a lively atmosphere. Reminds me of the earlier episodes from The Grind Cafe and then later that other nice cafe close to the boats/docks (what was the name of that place? I think it was close to 5 Star Marine?). Tim’s shirt reminds me of artist Jackson Pollack. Only one guest was able to match Tim’s shirt from several years ago. Tim conducted an interview with an eccentric professor based in Phuket who was wearing a “Thomas Magnum” Hawaiian shirt as loud as Tim’s previous shirts. The professor was really eccentric and Tim had a field day by delivering sarcastic remarks throughout the interview (about Thai culture). I loved that guest and it would be cool to see him on a future episode!

    Steve, congrats on the non-smoking stretch. I hope you succeed. Both good for the ticker and the pocket book.
    I myself got the mesh surgery in 2017 w/general anesthesia. I was released ~2 hrs later since I had someone else drive me home.
    I can't recall if it was lap or open, but I had a 3" or so souvenir scar when finished if that helps determine which way it was done.

    • @steverosse
      @steverosse ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's open. Laparoscopic leaves three tiny holes which usually heal without leaving any scar.

      @@steverosse That's good news then. It means open surgery allowed for outpatient w/o overnight. Hopefully if you go that route, you can be home same day if someone can get you home. I remember not lifting much for a week. Light pain meds, but I don't remember terrible pain after. For a few months prior to surgery, I bought a hernia truss & wore it. It helped when I had to cough/sneeze. Found mine at a surgical supply store in the US.

    Use an anti-inflammatory along with a muscle relaxant. This will help the sciatica. It made my back new again. Only took two nights of these meds and I was done. It was an Egyptian doctor in Saudi Arabia that prescribed this for me and I was stunned by the change.

    Tim I have knowledge about sciatica nerve pain, and no medecine will help in the long term. Only some really specific exercice will resove that as it's a problem of pressure on the nerve. I teach a and a specific stretching technique that is really efficient and that I've taught for decades. Not a scam. And free. I'll be on the island in october. take care. I Love your channel.

    I've had laparoscopic done on both sides. Best advise I could give is to make sure you have someone stay with you for a couple days to help you get around. Recovery can be painful for this. Mine was outpatient. I also just Google'd it and found that BKK Hospital shows 220K BHT for laparoscopic one side w/ mesh, open 160K. Might want to actually contact them direct.
