Usually that is my answer, but he said it was very large diameter and I don’t like to have too much oak as it takes longer to dry and turn over inventory.
If I'm selling firewood, considering the fact that this wood being delivered will be split and stacked to dry all summer, this is the perfect time to get the oak processed as opposed to getting it late summer and be forced to let it set all winter and the next summer before being able to get the moisture level where it needs to be. Just my $.02.
That was a great idea. This way you get alot done with the short amount of time you and Chris have. And it gives you more time to do other things in the wood yard to do. Take Care you too
I like how you keep a very neat and orderly yard. I know how fast things can get out of hand with a woodyard. I saw a few nice saw logs in that maple pile. I bet it's beautiful inside! Great channel!
I always thought it was a waste of time stacking logs in those cages.just chuck them in loose and if the customer doesn’t like it they can lump it as we say in England, they invariably just get tipped out anyway. Ps i just want to add that I have subscribed solely on the basis that you tip the logs in loose😊. Now my take on the system is that 1) you get a little rest moving the totes, 2)the machine gets a little rest. Pity the totes were not a bit bigger.
When I was firewooding full time and someone offered me a truckload of hardwood for free I would be gratefully turning somersaults and jumping for joy! Wow you must be inventory rich! Love your videos Cheers from HB NZ
I have no shortage of wood, I don’t need monster oak. Spring is around the corner and I need to save room for all the logs I will be bringing back from my own jobs.
Build yourself some fork extensions and grab two at once! That will cut the moving time almost in half essentially, instead of four separate trips you do two, and with four bins under the conveyor youll do those two trips less often! Big win if its not too heavy for the tractor
It’s just a lot of hard work ! Trial and changes here and there are what keeps it fun. But now lots of clean up and other parts of the process go on and on. Enjoying- exercise and a little spending $$ 👍👌🇺🇸💪
Looks great Jake! I just cleaned up mine and had to take a lot of stuff to the transfer station. This is a side gig for me and I couldn’t keep up and stuff rotted….sitting there since 2018 🤣. I get a clean slate and will put down some millings or mixed crushed stuff so I don’t have to deal with the mud and the skid doesn’t get stuck!
Wood yard is looking good!! Just split a cord of cherry last week, wonderful wood to split! I’ve been drinking Coors Banquet for years! It’s even better on tap if you can find it! I refer to it as my around the house work lubrication. Catch you on the next one!!
4 totes at a time looks great, but it's all up to you. Whichever makes you the happiest I would go with, you's two make a great team. It's a shame you had to turn away that load of oak but only you know how much storage you can do safely in the woodyard. Awesome looking firewood coming out of the box wedge..
I’m guessing doing 4 totes at a time or one at a time in the end are probably a bit close in time. I think what’s best depends on each persons process or situation. To me, the real time savings is not the actual production or moving the logs it’s the other things we do. If doing 4 at a time, in theory Chris can keep using the tractor to grab logs and keep bucking so maybe next time you don’t have to do all that bucking ahead of time bc Chris can do it. Or maybe while splitting into the 4 totes Chris can be stacking the logs if Jim drops another load. Or maybe you are solo and you have a ton of rounds so just split after work and then move totes first thing in the AM before work. Again, just all depends on one's process. Thats my 2 cents, thx for sharing!
You should be proud man look where you started compared to where you are. Im still using the double felling dogs and a buddy uses them as well. Congrats on the success bud !
Hey Jake, you guys got to keep in mind what you were saying earlier in the video too. When you guys get home at 3:30 4 o’clock and you have an hour give or take before the sun goes down this might be the most efficient way you could do it, otherwise you might get two totes done before the sun goes down instead of four. Considering a lot of the time you’re chasing cameras.
I know you hate to turn down wood, but take it from a small operation i got myself into a jam saying yes too many times!! I like the four totes!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Seems like Chris is always "picking up what you're putting down" Jake!! Just kiddin'!! 😁 I think it's always good to be trying out new techniques as you are figuring out what is really optimized for the setup. As you mentioned, it's a "hobby" that you make some money doing, so keep trying until you know for sure what doesn't work.
Gents, I think the math will all work out to be pretty equal whether you do one tote or 4 totes at a time with 2 people and enough rounds to feed the splitter. 15 minutes per tote is one hour for 4… either way you’re still going to take about the same time moving the totes. The wild card is processing the rounds to keep the splitter fed, along with the size and quality of the species of wood. Oak takes longer to process than Maple and 10 inch rounds versus 20 inch rounds will probably change the overall time as well. Just thinking out loud. Good video guys. Cheers.
That was pretty awesome!!! It's a shame there isn't some way you could put the totes on some kind of a conveyor system and push or roll the full totes out and the empty ones in maybe that's something you could think on!!!
I would think that as you prep for your splitting session, whether you do 1 or 4 totes at once, have 8-10 empty totes behind where you place them. As one of you is moving the full ones, the other can be placing an empty and start splitting again. I think that would save a bunch of time over the course of the day.
We have to play around with the 4 totes at once thing a bit more but they all seem to kind of fill at about the same rate which means having to move them all at about the same time.
Great video (as always) guys..... So, if you ratchet strapped 4 empty totes together, could you lift, move and place them with the kubota...??? Keep up the great work and content 👍
Until recently Brad had a nice clean wood yard too, but yes it makes wanting to spend time with this hobby easier when it’s organized. Did you guys ever find out why the international couldn’t lift the small load of dirt?
That really wasn’t so small a load of dirt, it was about 5 yards of wet topsoil. Each yard of topsoil weighs about 2,000 lbs plus the weight of the can. If it was on the truck it would’ve dumped it but picking it up from the ground was too much.
I find the box wedge is great for determining what is truly punky. If the wood doesn't crumble being pushed through a box wedge then as far as I'm concerned it's not punky.
My favorite wood, nice straight cherry! My least favorite Wood, curly twisted, knotty cherry!! 😜Need to make just a couple more tote gates! Was that the seven way box wedge, or the pizza? Whichever it was perfect. RTB Firewood. 👍🏻👍🏻
Is that second roll off truck a 40 yard dumpster? Thats like 4 cords-ish? Id have said heck yes to oak logs. 😂😂😂 bring it on! But hey, when u got a mountain already u can be picky, And ive had some bad experience with "bigger oak". They be bringing 48" log(s) rounds Great vid And 4 totes in 1 hr is good, get em moved out, let machine rest, and u guy s catch a break, and go back at it again. Yall would get 20 to 24 toted done in a good day? Maybe u can line up 6 and flip that blue chute up or down? Idk man im old 😂 Im still in ruggedmade mode. 1/2 cord per hr or so, good times with a good buddy/coworker tho. Plus wood amount goes to 3/4 to 1 cord per hr with a good co worker.
Yep 40 yard, we got that entire load split yesterday and it filled 12 totes in about 4 hours so yep about 4 cords. The oak was very big, not worth all the extra hassle.
@DudeRanchDIY hell yeah 12 totes in 4 hrs, so 24 a day is attainable, even 28 if yall push it to the limit and have a mountain of rounds ready to go, or a 3rd guy hanging out keeping fuel tanks full and odd jobs. Nice man. Hey also your older videos with the ruggedmade dude concerning the 6 way wedge aere great, i got one on the way, i got a 120 cord splitting job lined up here and that wedge is gonna be sweet
It would almost make sense to store all your empty totes near the end of the conveyor. As one guy is running the tractor and moving the full tote, the other guy is throwing lids on and dragging empty totes over to get staged. Just a thought…
U could always fill the 4 pause the conveyer move the full totes quick reset start splitting have the 2nd person put the totes away that way u only loose 10 or 15 minutes
4 totes of wood to move at one time. I would guess it would save about 15 minutes. The only real way to know for certain is run 8 totes each way. Starting with placing the first tote and taking care of the last tote. I would lay money on the 4 tote method by a minimum of a half hour.
@@DudeRanchDIY so it's 45min for 4m3s (baskets) from log to staging area and 2 people so about 22.5min /m3s not bad with such a split. good job . great movies you make .
Unsolicited advice is move the full totes to their home, replace with 4 new totes and continue splitting. Then go over and cover and label the bins so someone can be splitting during that time.
Guess I wasn't the only one to tell you about this 4 totes under elevator but believe 1 the 1st anyway think of this like I get home hr before dark tractor in shed have no reason to get out pile wood there just split for hr n call it a night. Day or two later come out 4 totes full now can start tractor move them n fresh one's in n move logs to cutting area
As for time moving the pallets doing 1 or 4 don't you think it is a wash . When moving the 4 one guy can move them while the other can keep cutting or putting the tops on the other three. But i do think the 4 tote method is the way to go
if you dump out one tote and stack it can you honestly tell what the stack measure in cubic feet?..in other words what fraction of a cord does a tote hold of loose unstacked firewood?
Yes, I do that in this video, A 330 gallon tote loose filled off the conveyor stacks out to just over 1/3 cord. th-cam.com/video/0U7zFmb8M1U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3nN_XgggnsQUwJar

I always thought that the proper wood hound answer to free delivered loads of firewood poles is "Thank you, may I have another?"
