The animation is so stellar this season... but can we just applaud Sophie's VA? She managed to convey just how lax and absolutely disingenuous she was throughout the fight despite being so polite and encouraging. Just the subtle pauses, lack of any passion, and the theatrical manner she speaks in conveys everything beyond and outside the fight; how she's holding back, how she looks down in others, and even how this whole fight was just a performance for her while keeping her cards hidden close. Mad kudos!

wonder if she could have guarded Gust. I mean she must have known he was going to hit a critical with Gust because he was pretty dry the whole match and even drew a heal
I definitely liked this episode. Through out the fight, it gets more and more unsettling from Sophie hiding her actual self throughout the fight to messing with Raika and even insulting Michiru in front of him. Glad Raika managed to take the win instead of just Sophie destroying him in thier first fight, but knowing that she was holding back, the next time Sophie would fight Raika then he would definitely be destroyed by her. As for the rest of the episode I definitely liked it as well, from how causal Danji is about going and arriving on New York to the Dynamic of Tohya and Raika wanting to blow thier budget for cards while Yu-yu is trying to restrain them along with the entirety of Project Uniformers having the same feel as Stride Gate. Overall a very good episode that managed to get me hooked.

Oh well, can't wait for the Sophie rematch, I guess she learned to not push the Michiru button. She probably wasn't being serious this game, so this loss sets up the big rematch next time.

@@hannals9347 True, in the end thats the "%100" she wanted to show in front of world. Like she said she will be real serious when they fight alone so we can expect a real fight of them sooner or later.
Oh absolutely! Yugioh is great, but it's mechanics always provide an out of any situation just by having the right card. You can always counter a counter, and you always just throw your best play for your deck at the moment. But vanguard has a lot of character in how luck plays a part and how people play around or anticipate possible luck; so different people can play the same deck so different. I was really expecting Raika to lose against Sophie.... then again it is really implied Sophie went easy on him and wasn't playing serious.... and i get the feeling raika is aware of that
I wish she had won after all the hyping up they did with her being the perfect Fighter and the winner of the Deluxe tournament and implying that she's the big bad or at least represents the big bad this season. Even the assumption that she held back doesn't help when it's implied that this is the deck she's been winning with and that she actually went all out at the end, all of which could have been helped with one throwaway line from Danji instead of cliffhanger shot of a card sleeve. If it was just because it was Raika and Youthberk fighting, Tohya was right there and this was a low stakes exhibition match.
@Re: Lyfe Alternative look at the narrative framing: Sophie is an unbeatable player who lost in her first on screen game, she puts up a polite front that Raika tears down with minimal provocation, she was holding back in this first match with the deck she used to win the Deluxe tournament with no word from Danji about how she changed her play style. For reference, Yugioh GX did something similar with Aster Phoenix in season two, but it worked better there because Aster used a loaner deck in his first match and still almost won, embarrassed Zane in his second with his for show deck (which he didn't need), and then trounced Jaden when he revealed his real deck. Aster losing the first game still showed us he was skilled enough to push Jaden without showing his true strength, which was enough to toy with an opponent Jaden never beat. What did Sophie show us here while losing? Because right now, I'm more concerned about the other guy that's been tailing Yuyu and co than the US Champion that I'm not convinced could've beaten Urara on her worst day.
@@QueenMelody16 An Urara is already a prodigy who so far has only lost once against YuYu so....... A better comparison would be saying couldn't bet Tomari or Zakusa (who have the most defeats if i an remember correctly)
@Ian R. Nava Huber in universe, fair enough. I originally went with Danji since he was there, but changed it to Urara because of the Triple Drive (or Twin Drive +1) comparison and what people have said about Lianorn's performance irl.
@Re: Lyfe Alternative 1. What part of my argument is looking down on Raika? If anything, I implied he and Youthberk are too strong to take an L against Lianorn 2, Cosmic Boogaloo. 2. All of your arguments don't address that one of the season antagonists looks weaker for losing here. I am less concerned with her than I am with Sam and she was built up as the biggest obstacle in this very episode. 3. The reason for the Yugioh comparison was to show these similar narrative beats being executed better. Which still hasn't been addressed. My complaint has nothing to do with Raika's abilities as a Fighter, how a top player would prepare for a game, or how Vanguard and Yugioh are different games. My complaint is that the antagonist (or one of, at least) isn't being built up properly as a threat when all we have to go off of is a shifty follower and someone who loses in their debut. At the very least, it's more work that they have to put in down the line to make beating her satisfying (to me, clearly in the minority) further down the line.

This episode made me more interested in Sophie’s personality. What are her true colors exactly?
uh...at 18:39 why did her song sounded like the one from GZ?
(The World Will be Silenced)
19.43 and 19.55 music fit the episode excelently
The effect of using the trigger in reverse... It's really charming. But I was concerned, but like Taizo, the first appearance... Although it doesn't seem to have enough power in that situation.😮
Can't wait for the next episode
damn ngl i didn't think raika would win. when his theme started playing i was like... Ain't no wayyyyyyy
nice, more will+dress!
That is insane fight
25:45 This Art Card look similar to "Hina" from Blue Archives. 🤣🤣🤣
When you realize that bushiroad actually trying to bring back strongest team.. Royal Paladin (aichi,/touya), Kagero(kai/yu yu) , Shadow Paladin(ren/raika) and spike brothers(morikawa/danji) 🤣🤣🤣
Broo that was a close game
I need breaking the rock to drop song is heat! 🔥🔥🔥
Of course Raika won, persona ride without glasses... strongest power move ever!!!
Hold up, the next episode is already called “The beginning of the end????”
i get it, crit symbols look like stars

Raika, please play Sequana, I beg of you
Bro ikr
And wayward
So Sophie belle is the voice for kourin from vanguard then kokomi from genshin impact and now vanguard willdress as Sophie belle
Stand up, The Vanguard!!!!!!!!
Raika may have won but you could tell she was sandbagging during their fight
10:12 (Off-topic) I suppose the Kaguya-sama cast being in marching band outfits is something new to Weiss Schwartz. They look nice is just that i find the marching band outfits "as something really unexpected"
So exciting for this!
Of all the places to have a rodeo arena, why New York? Seems more like a Texas theme. I mean New York does have rodeos but it's not anywhere near well-known for them.
Realy miss the old vanguard series
I don't know if this is fact or just speculation of mine... this is pure my thought when i rewatch WillDress S2. Mukai Jinki keep recruit people that got special ability like can sense card or smth like that, when Sophie Drive check you can see there's Zodiac sign star thingy in her eyes. If this was true then it all make sense why Jinki give Urara Deluxe invitation it's because she got some special ability that can hear card Tone or smth and he want to recruit her. They silver tongue Urara and she join them (At the start of the S2 Ep1, you can see the person that looks like Urara but using Uniformers Sleeve)
Sorry for my bad english, but i hope you guys get what i'm trying to say
Ahhh release Breaking the Rock already!!
Can't wait!
When i heard raika ost is over
Is that kourin voice as actor
Yup
Do you guys chick the new opening because I sure did and it was cool and and very simple
WHAT DO YOU MEAN DALLAS IS ONLY AN HOUR AWAY FROM NYC
she let him win, she wants him to 1v1 her alone. They went out of their way a few times to subtly hint even raika knows she let him win
Now I hope he got revolform dust
Anyone else notice the Warhammer boxes during the card shop scene?
Wish we could get the stand alone youthberk theme released
