This was one of the most requested video about this e220 cdi Mercedes diesel engine . The timing chain replacement can be very demanding and challenging and it will take you a couple of days , depending of the previous experience . This om646 engine is well built, very organized and intuitive, therefore this job is more like a big puzzle.

My 2016 Infiniti Q50 has a 2.2 diesel Mercedes engine. I've done 240k miles and it still runs okay. No noise from the chain. Is there a way just to check it rather than replace it?
Parfect video ! I learned a lot about serviceability of this engine. It doesen´t seem impossible but the need to remove the head in order to replace the guides is crazy. I remember the timing chain job on my BMW and this seems to be a bit worse since you need to remove the turbo, intake, injecotrs etc. but on the other hand, the 220cdi seems to have much more robust and simple design which can last a lot longer.
Hey man, i was trying to extract my injector and the screw breaks in half, could u tell me that if i remove all injectors and screws, that half inside would block me quiting the valve cover or not? Thanks!

Whit chain replacement is it not necessary to also replace the sprockets?
If the big nut on the crankshaft pulley cannot come off, then have to give up?

sweet job there. to do just the chain tensioner is there a special method asuming its the same for a om648
The best way is to remove the engine and do a full rebuild

How can you remove ac condenser if you dont remove refrigerant?
Why would you change the chain on a om611?? They last for atleast 800.000km
You dont have to open the chain at all, you remove the high pressure pump and the camshaft pulley and it falls down.

Great video but I am sure this is an OM611. It looks a bit different than my OM646 in some details. Also the OM646 was not used in W210. Anyway this can become very useful for me as I have to change my timing chain of my S203 with OM646.
It IS an OM611 DE 22 LA. The OM646 was introduces 2002 together with the W211-series. The W210 had the OM611 engine
Can't You just remove camshafts and roll with crankshaft new chain connected provisionally to old? Without removing anything except valve cover.

at what mileage should the chain be changed? because im looking into buying a w204 220cdi so im wondering if its a common problem or not.
In theory the chain is " for life " if the oil was changed regularly

Yup, you are correct. OM646 never came out on W210 chassi.
Same Engines! only difference are the Injectors in the later 646 and fuel system.
@@autoinfo5656 nah, they are mostly identical but not the same. Some parts are differently mounted and cooling system is a bit different. If they were the same they would be named same.

CDI 220 is a Monster Motor..
I just gonna rebuild the whole engine at that point

NO! i AM NOT HAPPY WITH THIS JOB! yOU SHOULD REMOVE THE ENGINE FIRST, remove THE CYLINDER HEAD, CHANGE THE SLIDERS!!! OF THE CHAIN! ALSO-IYOU SHOULD CHANGE ALL THE SPROCKETS!!! THE CHAIN IS WORN AS WELL ALSO THE SPROCKETS A RE WORN DOWN! ALSO- WHAT ABOUT THE OIL PAN GASKET? IT SHOULD BE CHANGED! ALSO THE REAR AND FRONT CRANKSHAFT SEALS! YES THIS WILL BE A RELAY SLOPPY JOB IF DO NOT REPLACE THE VALVE STEM SEALS!. BUT, BEFORE THIS YOU SHOULD INSPECT THE CONDITION OF VALVE AND RESURFACE THE VALVE SITS AND THE VALVES AND CHECK IT AGAIN . also! VERY IMPORTANT- CHANGE THE PISTON RINGS AND ROD BEARINGS AND CRANK SHAFT BEARINGS!!!. ALSO- THE INJECTORS!- BRING THE INJECTORS TO BOSH SHOP TO BE RE CALIBRATED AND UPDATE THE NEW CORRECTION NUMBERS INTO THE ECM... MAN, YOU JUST DO SLONPY JOB WITH THIS TIMING CHAIN. IF YOU DO NOT DO ALL THIS THINGS THAT THE BETTER WAY WAS JUST TO CONNECT THE NEW CHAIN TO THE OLDER ONE AND MADE TWO REVOLUTION ON THE CRANK SHAFT AND TO CONNECT THE NEW CHAIN PIN AND DUN- JOB FOR 15 MINUTES
He did it right. Because sometimes the car isn't often worth to do a full engine rebuild. So change the chain. Put it together, so the car can do 50 to 100.000 km again and than the car is done..
