about James (and KT) reading from a lyrics sheet: it doesn't mean they're not familiar with the song and don't know the words. They're duetting together for the first time ever, with very little notice or preparation, singing a song they've never performed to an audience before and in front of television cameras. It's perfectly understandable in those circumstances that they would use lyric prompts, even if they know the song as well as anyone else. It's there as a safety net for them and for reassurance. Seriously, anyone not understanding this is obviously someone who will never get close to performing to an audience.
I believe this was for radio, so the lyric sheets wouldn't've mattered anyway. James looked nervous as f*ck as well, plus he had to remember the melody on top of the chords, which he was probably trying to read in sync with the lyrics as well.
Yeah, seriously. They only had, like a day or two two get familiar with a really new song. Like, a song that just dropped last Tuesday. How could they have done any better? They both have great voices and I have really loved KT since I first heard her but they should both be banished from music after this. Fire them both. Feed them to bandersnatches for all I care. Stop sterilizing and prettifying songs that don't need to be fucked with.
To all the people saying this sounds crap, and nothing like the original, well stick Shane Macgowen there with just an acoustic guitar, and guess what, it'll sound crap and nothing like the original :-) I think this is an excellent effort.
It was JDB that 'brought me here' - as we say on TH-cam - as I've been listening to the manacs for the last hour, but while KT Tunstall does surprisingly okay, there's only Christy Moore and Liam Clancy who could ever do a Shane MacGowan cover justice. (Well, maybe Damo Dempsey too!)
Ok guys this isn't James's finest hour but he was probably asked to do it last min & agreed which is credit to him! As for saying he was never a singer... Have you heard any MSP songs or seen them live? With a bit of rehearsal time this would have been epic...
Not bad, good attempt at covering a classic, no where near as good as the origianal but still very good and miles better than the God awful Ed Sheeran and Anne Marie cover
A 'nice' version but neither of them sound as sad, defeated and down-trodden as Kirsty & Shane sounded. Those two made this song into a hymn for the alkies, wino's and bums of the world and James & Kate don't get close to that.
Groo Grux No, the man is right. Shocking version. Horrible. I love mr. dean . the man has a once in a lifetime voice, but it doesn't work with this. It's a bigger song than most people realize . Raglan road by Luke Kelly . Big song. Not necessary a great song , but it is a big song. If you feel you get it.
So there should never be any ad hoc, unrehearsed duos then? This is what music is all about, but maybe you prefer the cold plastic precision of the X-factor studio
This is dreadful. James Dean Bradfield covering such an iconic piece of art and he needs a lyric sheet. Shame on you JDB. Who pushed you into that one? Was it the imbecile Evans?
Eargasm when I listen to JD or when I listen to the Manics (I'm French, of course, and I'm almost alone to Know Manics). I love the voice of JD and the voice of Nicky, sorry. I love everything from Manics.
This man sings anythibg and whilst KT Tunstall has her place shes Jammy bastard at best with a mediicicre voicw clearly reading lyrica and should have 😅 learned them out of respwcr but didnr!!♡♡♡♡♡♤♤♤♤
James Dean Bradfield one of the best voices 👌
Still enough to bring a man to tears after 12 years in the wilderness
She is brilliant: they both are. A lovely version.😍
Two great singers, and song.
Wish I could sing this crystal clear round 8:00 am. Both JDB and KT prove they are big time performers.

Poor bradders generally struggles to remember his own bands lyrics

He gets nerves too
A really good voice match
A wonderful version !! You could tell it was spontaneous!!!!
Loved it! 👏👏
awesome KT!! love it!
I listen to this every Christmas! Xxx
Excellent fair play👍
Great upload :) happy holidays!
stunning

I think this is an excellent effort.
Agree. People can't help themselves with comparisons. Just enjoy their version.
I agree it is not crap what was crap was the fact that you think it would be just as good version as McGowan on his own....
Most of all, I don’t think Shane would even show up at Dave’s morning show.
Oh yes it is! I think James and KT were pitched for this act no less than 48 hours before, and above all they sound way better than Mcgowan an McCall.
James’ voice sounds big time clear even in the morning. KT also does the job, but The Manics rule throughout.
I think is The pure improvisation, but sound it great! Merry Christmas to everybody here! 🎄🎁💝🎀
Kt nails it
I actually like her voice, goes well with JDB's. Nice cover
Kt I love you
Another example of how talented singers can find instant vocal harmony. Yet strange how there seem to be a Berlin wall between James and Katie.
I suspect he is very shy.

🇨🇮 ❤️ 🙏🏽

Seemed to withdraw.
He’s got a high register but had to sing a low part… doesn’t really work but he’s got a hell of a voice when he’s doing his own stuff
Hey, at least it wasn't Nicky..
Groo Grux
it's just a bit too low for job's voice
Agreed. Nice try, but it was just too low.
James sings this too well.
It's good but sounds to me very much like the original
Not bad, good attempt at covering a classic, no where near as good as the origianal but still very good and miles better than the God awful Ed Sheeran and Anne Marie cover
One of two mismatches for this song, the other one being Katie Malua and the Pogues. If K T could be teamed with the Pogues it might work out.
A 'nice' version but neither of them sound as sad, defeated and down-trodden as Kirsty & Shane sounded. Those two made this song into a hymn for the alkies, wino's and bums of the world and James & Kate don't get close to that.
Dreadful, such a shame
It's really not dreadful
Changing the words = Thumbs Down
Poor effort...I would have expected more from jdb...
Oh well, it's not as fucking shit as the Gary Barlow one.

No just No
Both are reading lyrics. If you have to read the lyrics you have no business attempting this classic., Fail

Quite- this song is a bitch to play on just an acoustic, and the melody for vocals is not easy. What's wrong in just belting something out for fun?
Very poor
This is dreadful. James Dean Bradfield covering such an iconic piece of art and he needs a lyric sheet. Shame on you JDB. Who pushed you into that one? Was it the imbecile Evans?
I love James to death, but he never was a singer
What a twit you are
robvanriot Can you honestly say he has any real control over his voice here?
He's sold about 5 million albums as a vocalist . . is the earth still flat?
Have a think before you post, what a tool you are!
Eargasm when I listen to JD or when I listen to the Manics (I'm French, of course, and I'm almost alone to Know Manics). I love the voice of JD and the voice of Nicky, sorry. I love everything from Manics.
Fuck with this version
