The best thing in this star is the Wolverine IIc. It's a sleek update to the OG Wolverine and gives you an opportunity to troll your loreful Clan opponents by only referring to it as a Wolverine IIc and not as a Hellhound or Conjurer. Personally I like to reserve Hellhound for the MW4 model, which deserves to be its own 'Mech. The Piranha is one of the best named 'Mechs in the game. A swarm of those things will strip a Daishi to its bones in a matter of seconds. The lore for the Goshawk says it's intended as a duelist, but personally I think it's loadout is pretty great for a garrison 'Mech. It has mobility (including jump jets), accurate firepower, and the ability to erase any infantry who are attempting to breach whatever you're defending. The Wolverine IIc is similarly solid, though I have to imagine that the double SSRM2s are a legacy of when Infernos worked in any 2-pack SRM variant. The Vixen has a similar loadout to both the Goshawk and the Wolverine IIc, taking the ERMLs of the latter and the quad MGs of the former. The fact that all three 'Mechs are so similar to each other speaks to how effective the Clan LPL is. The Peregrine reminds me a bit of the Wolfhound with the LPL and 2 MPLs. It's heavier than the Vixen but has a half ton less armor, and lacks speed comparatively, but the all-pulse loadout should make it a superior light hunter. Honestly, this star is absolute death to infantry. 4 mgs on two of them, and the Piranha's dozen, and every unit is highly mobile. The overwhelming reliance on LPLs for main guns really fits with the second-line deployment profile for these designs as well. Visually, each one of the models is very well done. The Piranha is probably my least favorite, but even it isn't bad looking.
Hi guys, great video! Cool tip, this exact 5 mechs are the main mechs for the characters on an official Battletech novel called Ghost of Winter. The main guys used the Goshawk. That might be the reason for this strange line up, but I do agree in that it is an unbox and play star. Keep up the good content!
The Incubus/Vixen is a nasty piece of business, combining high speed with a large pulse laser or ER PPC depending on the variant. This whole set has some great second-line Clan mechs that can fit into a list s lot easier than some of the big Omnimechs. Love these unboxing vids, getting your reactions to the new sculpts, and having good fun!
Okay, hear me out here: the Incubus is what the Clans would make if you told them you wanted a scout/flanker 'Mech with primarily energy weapons but also anti-infantry capabilities. In other words, it's secretly the 'real' Phoenix Hawk IIC. Early on with Clan lore, trueborns didn't like jump jets for the most part. At the same time, for some reason, most medium-weight IICs were downscaled from the original weight of their Inner Sphere origins: the Shadow Hawk IIC is 45 tons and the Griffin IIC is just 40. Their IIC take on the Phoenix Hawk being 30 tons wouldn't be entirely improbable.
Thom's comment that the Goshawk is from Nebraska made me choke on my mashed potatoes! Real life Goshawks can be pretty scrappy. They are not the largest of the raptors but from what I know they are extremely territorial and have been known to attack people near their nests. OK, enough nerding out about birds. Thanks for the review.
One of the reasons the original Wasp is one of my favourite mechs (besides being such an underdog) is that the mini makes a good proxy for both valkyrie, and incubus. As for the Inky - it's a great mech. 1500 bv is quite a bit - you can get some real killers around 1300, but 9/14 move, 5.5 tons of ferro-fibrous, LPL, 2 ERML, and MGs. And the variants are really good too - SSRM6 and 2MPL on a mech that fast is some serious firepower.
Conjurer/Hellhound/Wolvie IIC was a favorite in MW4: Mercs. Also a pain to face in the Halloran V artillery escort mission, those ACs and large laser could ruin your day
Great review! If your playing 2nd line clan mechs, especially with these armed with clan pulse lasers the pilots dont have to be elite to be deadly. Hopefully can get a preview of a painted wave 2 mech next video. looking forward to more videos. Great work!
I plan to get this box eventually. I will paint the Horned Owl up to look like Char Aznable's Zaku II from Mobile Suit Gundam, and the Incubus as Maximilian Jenius/Max Sterling's VF-1 from Macross/Robotech.
Oh yeah. The Goshawk's a fearsome opponent. To the point where one of my training scenario ideas is a 3 on one with 3 3052 era IS mechs vs one Goshawk and see how it plays out.
@@malusignatius Thats a good scenario, it can rip apart lights and Mediums in quick order and can wear down heavies thanks to the fact that it simply does not miss, -3 to hit is just horrific. The Goshawk is one of those Mechs that you don't field many off because its just a little bit broken. Sure she don't hit hard, but the sheer consistency means that it can wear you down.
@@sharlin648 It's one of the reasons why I'm a big fan of going off of BV instead of tonnage. At least BV tries to account for how savage certain equipment combos are.
I am very much looking forward to this star pack. it's full of all sorts of nastiness. If nothing else, it proves that even Clan 'second line' units are worthy of respect. (The Horned Owl looks like a Southern Cross Bioroid to me, BTW). As for the clans they all come from/heavily used by: Piranha: Diamond Shark Incubus: Jade Falcon Horned Owl: Ghost Bear, though Smoke Jaguar are fond of it too Hellhound: Jade Falcon Vapor Eagle: Steel Viper Having said that, by 3060 it seems most of the clans have at least limited access to all of them.
If I remember right, the original designs for these (except for the Piranha) were designed in Japan. Since a lot of the original mechs were licensed anime mechs, when one of the video games was ported over to Japan they had to redesign them because everyone there would’ve recognized them from Dougram and Crusher Joe and Macross. Victor Musical Industries (VMI) drew up new designs for the anime-derived mechs, and FASA later used them for the IICs. They also had VMI draw a few more to round out the second-line clan mechs. But I find it a little strange that these second-liners often seem better than the omnis.
They definitely made a lead/ralidium Hellhound.... cause I used to have one in my Merc regiment... and a Goshawk, which was a bit skinnier than the current version. Piranha looks GREAT....looks like the old TR pictures. It's the ultimate anti-infantry unit.
I guess watching these videos atm is not the best idea for my patiens while waiting for my pledge... Which is on hold and the founders only know when and if I will get my stuff... But seeing the Mechs and listen to your banter about them is to much fun 😅
I'm still hoping to see a giant mixed game campaign some day. Classic or Destiny for smaller engagements and Alpha Strike for larger engagements. It wasn't an option in the last Patreon Poll but consider this the official planting of a seed of an idea for future campaigns.
I'm not sure where the picture on the front of the Battletech Support Deck first appeared, but I do know that it appears in the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition Rule Book on page 123. Looking at the Mechs involved and their paint schemes it definitely takes place during the Jihad, so was likely made in the early 2000s or later. Also, it appears to be based on the paint schemes and Mechs involved a battle with the Word of Blake on one side and the 1st Donegal Jaegers with some Clan Wolf-in-Exile on the other.
