Hawk chasing the MP a few weeks back. I had my goggles on and my spotter was watching the hawk. Put the drone down in a field safely till hawk decided to chase something else.
Did a 360 of a parked bus for a church. Didnt check the radius I was circling and tapped a tree branch. I'm super happy it caused no real damage and the blade got a very small chip but still flew with no issues.
Attach a REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT ribbon streamer to your gimbal shield-- makes it easy to remember you have to remove the shield before flight. Just like the shields over full-flight aircraft.
Great video. Additional tip on getting back in high winds aloft: In sport mode of course, descend and fly forward (towards you) simultaneously. This method utilizes gravity so that you are in effect going downhill, thereby dramatically increasing your ability to fly forward against the wind. I bought my Mavic Mini for myself last Christmas, took it over to my kids house on Christmas day, and promptly got up to where the wind would not allow me to come back. Knowing that the wind was much less near the ground I started to descend, then noticed that the drone had a very fast ground speed when combining forward motion with the descent.
Yes, I mention that in my How to Prevent Flyaways video as it makes a huge difference. Until you run out of height. Climbing has very much the opposite effect.....
On RTH against a strong wind and if you've lost sight of the drone: Just watch the screen until the drone completes its turn, then cancel RTH to avoid climbing, zero the gimbal, get in S mode, and fly forward, keeping sky below the centre of the screen to avoid obstacles. It's an alternative to using the map.
@@watchingeye5435 What Lindsay says is let the automatic RTH start, as that will automatically point the drone towards you (the home point). Then cancel the RTH (as it's only P Normal Mode) and select Sports Mode and just fly forwards.....
Brilliant advice. I'm a lifelong radiomodeller and there's a LOT of useful tips and tricks in this video that i hadn't thought of with my new Mavic Mini. Many Thanks.
Ran into an auning with it and fell into a bag of rock salt pretty early on. It didn't fall very far and I was back up and running a couple blades later but was still scary. That aside I'm learning, and it's a VERY fun little drone and a great purchase in my mind. To be constructive: when you're starting out, especially in the beginning, shy away from any sort of building. Only fly within VLOS and just keep an eye on things. There's a certain amount of finesse that comes with practice in knowing when and how to control it, and it takes a long time to get good drone-eye coordination, if that makes sense. So really just take your time and treat it like a new car. Happy flying!
Thanks! Great video for beginners like me flying the DJI Mini 2. So much to think about on your first few flights, so I watch all the instructional videos I can.
I would like to add: visually inspect your drone and props for cracks or chips. Change props as needed and at a predetermined interval. Good topic. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for all the tips mate. The tips you shared are the things I do when I fly. I been flying now for about 2 to 3 years. No lost drone or crushes 👌🏾🤞🏾👏🏾
I use the mini for practice (circles and figure 8s, circles facing inward, circles facing outward) on on my front lawn in between trees, my vehicles, my house and a busy road. If you think you are losing control or will hit something just let go of the sticks. It will stop and you can start over. In tight spots, go very slow.
Great videos! Thank you! I bought my mini last year during lockdown. My first drone. So, I had to learn to fly it somehow. I did put the prop guards and stated to fly indoors. I knew it was a bad ideea so I combined the training with the DJI Simulator. I worked for me. I hit TV once, walls many times, the door, no damages, except for a finger cut after I catched the drone that sucked a piece o paper. I learned to fly very smooth from one room to another. A few months later I was able to continue the training outside. :)
Took my phantom 2 to the beach, came back landed and turned off. Decided to go again and thought it will remember where it is and took off immediately. Didn’t have enough satellites and I quickly realised I was in complete manual mode. In my panic forced the drone down and managed to land. Learned a lesson big time.
Just got the Mavic mini. Your narratives are great info. Clear, concise, informative with a pleasant cordial character. Great videos. I will keep watching. Thanks for the tips!!
Awesome information Ian! Thank you! Just watched your other video where you lost your Mavic Pro yesterday! If something can go wrong, usually it will! That broke my heart!!!!!
Jeansplayz XXX Mine turned up the other day. I am most pleased with it. Only taken it a few small test flights as we’re in lockdown. Can’t wait to take it up the Scottish Highlands and give it a real work out. Loch Lomand, here I come.
@@DavidHeffron78 i got mine and returned it after 3 days, it's great and has great quality, but it can't really handle wind, i flew it out on 22km/hr wind and it stuggled with moving forward, and RTH would be turned off in strong wind making it scarier if i lost connection
@@adnankashalo1409 I mean to ask about that too - I also live in Scotland and I've seen high wind test videos on TH-cam but the winds don't seem to be that strong. Scotland almost daily sees winds reaching 15-20mph and I am just not sure if this drone is a good idea.
Just got my Mavic Mini the other day and I like to think I have common sense. I think the one tip which I'm defo gonna keep in mind is flying into the wind and keeping in mind It'll be harder on the drone trying to RTH into wind. Great tips!
Thank you so much Ian. I have watched so many videos before I found all yours. So clear and helpful. I have just bought the air 2 for school and another one for me but school one just won’t connect to remote at all. The school one was an A1 from drones direct. Big mistake perhaps. Waiting for them to come back to me. Anyway my point I am now ready after watching your videos to get out and have a go on my one. Thank you. Paul.
I have the Evo, but my cousin who had a fly away with a RC JJX12 is now getting the Mini as I recommended. Just wanted to say I sent him this link as it is very informative and well thought out. Thanks for sharing those tips. Also great for any drone. We are both on lock down. I'm in NY and cousin is in NJ USA.
Excellent advice Ian (as usual). I would add 2 tips relating to emergency landings away from 'home'. The first is pre-flight planning. Familiarise yourself with the area you'll be flying over, looking (obviously) for possible landing sites but also checking whether they are accessible - a bowling green would make a great landing site, but not on a private estate or a members only club that is closed until the summer. The second comes straight from real world aviation. Monitor your position in relation to these sites (and any others you spot from the air) constantly, so that you always know exactly where you want to land at the first sign of trouble. Even a few seconds can make all the difference between dry land and water, access or no access, clearing or hitting tree lines/power lines. I have a mini combo being delivered tomorrow, and (typically) the forecast winds are so bad I'll be checking all the windows are closed before I unbox it :-) It looks like those propeller guards are going to get a day or two of use after all.
Good points; just remember it's not a great idea to use the prop guards outside; they act like a sail and will make a blowaway even more likely; but inside, they're incredibly useful!
Outstanding video with the information I need delivered with the perfect cadence and volume with great examples mate! Now put another shrimp on the "Bobby" in that great back yard of yours! You deserve it. Heck, I might even subscribe beyond my thumbs up.
Cheers Ian. I'm getting my mini on Monday, I've been watching lots of videos on the mini but I love how ur so informative and straight to the point. Keep up the good work. New subscriber here. 👍
Things I've found being very new to drone flying , is be comfortable when flying as things can get out of hand if your stressed your there mostly to have fun . Bring some drinks like lucozade or smart water and some snacks . When you think things are going wrong. If possible raise high enough so it can't hit anything , take your hands off the sticks and hover then gather yourself and carry on
Excellent advice. I would add: 1. Check airspace (use NATS Drone Assist app in UK, and you can report your activity in-app so low flying aircraft are get warning); 2. Set your drone's performance limitations in e.g. UAV Forecast App, and check it says "Good to fly" just before you take off... (use these apps before you set airplane mode on your device); 3. The sensors may trigger landing just after you fly very low over an unseen barren patch in a leafy crop (as well as water etc as Ian said), so keep a finger hovering over the RTH button to cancel the landing.
Hello. This is a great (if a bit rapid) intro to the mini. Some of this I found to be common sense, but you covered many issues I would have not have thought of until too late. I am a new flyer, and am more concerned about flying than photos or videos at this point. I am day-by-day increasing my range and flight attitude. Thanks for this. I am paying a lot more attention to controlling the aircraft.
Flying backwards can get some awesome shots, just don't forget that unless you need it to be part of a longer more complex shot, you can always fly forward through the shot you want and reverse it in post production to get the exact shot you were looking for (usually more precisely than you can get flying backwards anyway).
I wanna clarify wind issues a bit, just because I myself have had more than one time where wind turned against me like Godzilla turns on Tokyo. If you're up nice and high and you get a high wind warning and you start losing the drone, _hit the deck._ Now, I don't mean literally land it immediately; I mean, get rid of as much altitude as you can without risking loss or getting yourself in more related or unrelated trouble. Wind at least on typical terrain is a _gradient._ That means, the higher you are, the faster the wind will be in general. Therefore, if you descend as much as you can, you stand a fair chance of recovery and safe return. I was doing an altitude record one day with a modified FPV EasyStar and I was fine and having a blast until at 2500 feet I suddenly realized that I had moved WAY further west than I realized and had actually crossed most of a nearly 1 mile wide lake. Couldn't get back due to the strong winds, so naturally I dove to reduce the wind problems. THEN I realized I had not nearly enough battery to make the trip home anyway. Ended up sighting a decent landing spot and making a hard dive to eliminate altitude and make the landing before I lost power. As she made into the clearing and was just ten feet up, all went black and stayed that way. I had to make a long walk, but I found her laying in the grass like someone had lovingly set her there, lol. Phewwww. Now, that's with a fixed wing plane... and you as a quad flier DO NOT have the luxury of an unpowered glide. You lose power, she goes down like a rock, and that's that. In a quad, you need to drop FAST but not so fast that you smack the ground, but you do need to act quickly. Spend just a few seconds looking at the terrain below you, and lock what you see into your memory. You'll be thinking two things: 1) You need a good emergency landing spot, and 2) If you lose signal, you need to remember what the area looked like so you can find her if she went down there. Also, as a general rule, don't fly over areas you can't enter for recovery. It can't always be helped, especially if you lose control for a bit or you just HAVE to have that perfect shot, but do try to stay away from inaccessible areas. Sooner or later you're going to find yourself in a very, very awkward position, the more chances you take.
That's what FPV brushless whoops are for. :) In summer a couple of FPV flying mates and I used to race circuits of my house. It got to the point where I'd open the patio doors and the big bedroom window above it so we could do longer routes through more rooms. It all got a bit silly in the end (too many near misses with windows, the TV, and ornaments) so we decided to stop, but every time I managed to do half a power loop and a quick roll from the patio doors and post my whoop straight through the open bedroom window I felt like a friggin' god !!!!! LOL !
What a very very useful video and worth watching with the drone loss at Dover (I feel sympathy for you there as a complex situation) - I have only just purchased a Mavic Pro 2 drone and whilst fortunate in having a large acreage of private ground to 'learn' in - this checklist is very helpful, thank you Ian.
Nice one again Ian. In addition...always keep your eyes on your own drone when flying with mates. Up in de air drones all look alike and one can be easily confused. Happened to me once while flying with a couple of M2's and flew mine into the bushes. Without harm done or damage btw. Greetz from Holland and stay healthy!
Hi Ian another great video content quick clear and precise, everything for the novice like me and for the ones that might have forgotten the basics, ive had my Mini for 6 weeks and still finding more about the drone every time I fly, looking forward to your next one, stay safe Ian in this uncertain times.
Great video. Waiting for my first drone to arrive, mavic air 2 (flymore kit), so doing a fair bit of research and learning. Good to see one that isn't all about specs, range and image quality. Thanks, Stuart (sort of London).
Going under a river bridge, the wind tunnel effect sent it towards the left arch corrected then was heading for right arch managed to back out in reverse but was panicking a bit!
Great tips! I learned some of those in the hard way! Another one: In uneven places with hills and valleys, if you depart from lower ground, you need to compensate for that height difference, I hit a tree when the altitude relative to my departure spot was showing I had a good 10 meters clearance above the highest tree, (that was me guessing instead of surveying things properly) as I started my flight in a much lower ground I hit the top of a tree when doing a circular shot, flying sideways. Hopefully the drone was recovered but dam it was so much work to get it from the tree without damage.
I did loose connection with my Mini 2 the other day after taking off in a garden sourrounded by tall trees. Suddenly the picture on my phone froze and a "red" warning came up on the screen. Started with a 80% capacity on batteries and had flown just 2+ kms. all I could do was to wait for it to activate RTH and so it did. So happy when I heard the sound and saw it in the air.
What near misses have you had? Let us know below! Take care and stay safe! Ian

Having flown real aircraft, I always tend to fly drones as though I'm actually in them and will get hurt if I crash.
Close calls? Check! Crashed into a tree, walls indoors and the latest was flying away from an angry bird. For real! Thanks for the tips :)

Longest comment I’ve ever seen 🤣
@@joelsmtb3511 Bro, I am good for *so* much more... 🤣
Very helpfull video thanks for precious information , stay safety 👍
Thank you so much Ian,very useful.
Always great content. I did fly indoors but put on the prop guards and found it much more challenging
It adds to the weight but you're safe when you hit a wall 👍🏻
That's what FPV brushless whoops are for. :)
In summer a couple of FPV flying mates and I used to race circuits of my house. LOL !
Thanks a lot for the advices for beginners!
Thanks for sharing, all these points are super-important!
I always feel like I'm playing Russian Roullette when flying with other drones.... Sooner or later, a mid air collision........ :)
Thank you Ian great tips ... stay safe and well friend 😊🙏🏼
Thanks Will; you too. Ian
Don't even own a drone. But I'm addicted to this channel.
Hi Ian another great video content quick clear and precise, everything for the novice like me and for
the ones that might have forgotten the basics, ive had my Mini for 6 weeks and still finding more
about the drone every time I fly, looking forward to your next one, stay safe Ian in this uncertain times.
Thanks Steven. Yep, hop you can get out and fly! Take care and stay sane. Ian
Great tips.... sold my Phantom, up to the Mini.
As always, enjoy your videos
Great video. Waiting for my first drone to arrive, mavic air 2 (flymore kit), so doing a fair bit of research and learning. Good to see one that isn't all about specs, range and image quality. Thanks, Stuart (sort of London).
Glad it was helpful! Find somewhere far away from peopel and buildings and have fun learning... :)
Going under a river bridge, the wind tunnel effect sent it towards the left arch corrected then was heading for right arch managed to back out in reverse but was panicking a bit!
Well Done..... The Info Is Great For Experienced And First Time Flyers Of All Ages.....
Fantastic professional advice!
Good tips Ian
I did loose connection with my Mini 2 the other day after taking off in a garden sourrounded by tall trees. Suddenly the picture on my phone froze and a "red" warning came up on the screen. Started with a 80% capacity on batteries and had flown just 2+ kms. all I could do was to wait for it to activate RTH and so it did. So happy when I heard the sound and saw it in the air.
Outstanding! I love your photo bomb dog.
Thank you!
