For me, Sheera's intro to this is already part of the anime itself, like Yuiko Ohara's songs.
The reason she went toward the goblin ears is because she needed it as proof of completing the quest. The boy burned the goblins and their ears so that quest was a waste of time and she deemed him useless.
By the time they bring those ears their gonna be blown away to dust and ashes
Yeah it does sort of show how far even maturity wise cliff is behind Rudeus at this point, I'd say the last time Rudeus did something like this was when they first went out adventuring as Dead End and ended up getting a guy killed because he was waiting for the "Right moment" to save the dude.
@@Torpid6441 Yeah unfortunately Cliff didn’t realize his mistake, and just like Rudeus I’m afraid it’ll have to be something as big as Rudy’s for him to realize the importance of maturity.

@@Torpid6441 Yeah at the end of the day Cliff serves as a foil character for Rudeus. Rudeus is smarter, and far better of a magician, but he never takes any pride in it and shows zero arrogance or self-centredness compared to Cliff who lets it all go to his head. I feel like Cliff is a representation of how Rudeus wouldve turned out if he never matured from his first life: simply giving up on improving as a magician and a human, and lording his abilities above everyone else.

Something I think you guys didn't pick up was that when Cliff used a powerful fire magic to kill the goblins, he ruined Eris' bounty, because the guild lady requested the goblin's left ears as proof for the kills. That's why she went to the carbonized corpses and couldn't pick any ears, they were charcoal already. That demonstrates even though Cliff is indeed a powerful mage, he lacks experience in teamwork and also in using the appropriate spells for a given situation, something Rudeus always does well.
It also shows Eris's growth as well as to how far she has come, before she would have just snapped right there. Now she just moves on as if it's nothing.

yeah and she was extra annoyed because she was making a sport of fighting them and he ruined her fun.
And he puts too much stock in advanced and higher magic, even though in a fight it's too slow and often too big of an effect. Whereas Rudy uses basic magic and some intermediate but uses more mana to supercharge it (and makes a hyper lethal hollow point bullet essentially).
@@lonestrider11 Well, it helps that she wasn´t really after the reward anyway. She just wanted to basically cross out goblin slaying from her "adventurer bucket list". :D
Theressa is Rudeus aunt, they excluded this in the anime but it is said in this moment in the novel, it was with help that they were able to leave Milis without paying a lot of money for Ruijerd.

I like the parallel to Rudy, being a talented young mage. But he doesn't have that previous lifetime of fuck ups to help him coarse correct his own hubris.
And both got smoked by Eris the first time they met, a homie match made in heaven
@@Ozone946 true but rudy ate that punch then got to run away because he can do magic without incantation to push her of. Eris knocked cliff out in the light novel with the first punch and had to be stopped by people from beating him in to a pulp.
also rudy didn't trash talk eris at least. Especually after befriending her he knows what tone he should have with her.
So basically the beginning "clip art" portion is an incomplete telling of Cliff's childhood. He's the grandson of the current pope who's parent's are dead. Before his grandfather started competing to become pope he put Cliff in an orphanage (secretly) to keep his enemies from knowing Cliff's existence and from targeting him. After becoming Pope he took Cliff out of the orphanage and brought him into the church and had him trained by his own people. They found out that he's a genius magician and all the praise got to his head. This will become important in future seasons of the show.

Well he didn´t exactly put him in the orphanage before the power struggle. Unfortunately it was only after Cliffs parents got caught in the fight and got killed.
Finally. Thank you so much for this one. I still laugh at how Rudeus got instant Goblin Slayer vibes when Eris said she wanted to do this.😂

FYI, that line was in the web novel too and it was written way before Goblin Slayer was a thing. The trope of rapist goblins far precedes Goblin Slayer. At the very least, it was a trope in eroge games, like Rance in early 2000s which was an inspiration for Mushoku Tensei.

Birds at 4:10 when Eris and Cliff met, one of them courting the other, and then same birds at 9:31 parted ways in the same bridge where Cliff and Eris parted ways. I love the symbolism in this show.

Cliff, the little girl and the knight are going to be part of the story in the future, you know how mushoku is, there isnt even one wasted character, i feel kinda sad when roshi said he didnt remember, i mean is understandable with all the series you guys watch but as a mushoku fanboy it hurts a little lol

Cliff becomes a lot more likable later in the story, so I’m happy he was able to be introduced in the anime
The subtlety in how the fight is choreographed is significant. When Eris trained with Ruijerd, Ruijerd is considered a North God user, so same as Gallus Cleaner, thus this fight scene definitely is very North God like. When she trains with Ghislane, she'll be learning Sword God which is a very different fighting style.
During that fight with the pope’s soldiers, Eris almost died because she was surrounded and one of them came at her from behind. Iirc, she only survived because she slipped, causing it to narrowly miss her. But that one near-death instant scared the shit out of her and made her realize that she needed even more training

And this episode was before Ruijerd acknowledged her as a warrior. "The strength of a full fledged warrior" was a bit of an understatement

Speaking of goblin slayer, that's definitely something you guys should react to. It's a bit dark but nonetheless a good anime.
They managed to make Goblins seem like a legitimate threat and make a unique folk hero type... people hate that shit.

They didn't explain it but the female guard was zenith sister, rudeus Aunt, they were suppose to actually meet cause it comes up later in the series for a plot point, also readers should known this cause of her last name

When Eris cuts the first assassin.
Fire and Forge Doug: The blade is broad, has a nice balance to it. It is very light and thus allows her to manoeuvre the sword with ease. The handle is just perfect. She has a comfy firm grip for more control. The edge is very sharp it cuts clean and deep severing the assassin's spine with little to no resistance and brutally splitting his body into two. Her blade,..... It will keal. 😁

On the flip side we meet some relevant characters, including Cliff who will be a big part of the series.
Don't feel too bad for Cliff, he lost this battle but he wins big later.
Not gonna lie, I'd watch an entire anime episode, heck even an entire show, in the style of the first few minutes of this OVA. That shit was epic

@@Torpid6441 Probably 4 or 5 going to have to go through the solo stuff, the meeting of a certain character and Rudeus, the traveling and the test before all of the other supporting characters show up. I think altogether all of that if they're not rushing things should take a good 4 or 5 episodes

Damn, they really changed what Ruijerd did during this part of the story. In the LN he went to meet with an old friend he rescued decades ago on the Demon continent, and this friend turned out to be a high ranking general of some sort. Also, the Temple Knight lady is Rudy's aunt, Zenith's sister

I think its because we always saw Zenith with her hair tied. Even in the LN illustrations, they don't really look alike to me at first glance. I actually only noticed the resemblance in this OVA on a video thumbnail, I thought she was Zenith, but while watching this OVA I didn't find the resemblance except for the hair color.
