    The story of the Macedonians begins with their being descended from the Dorian tribe. The Dorians were comprised of the Macedonians and Spartans. Based on the evidence, only an unreasonable person or a denier of reality would argue that the Macedonians were';t Hellenes. Alexander believed he was the progeny of Archilles. The Macedonias are more responsible than any other Greek group for the Hellenistic Age. Finally, the initial 'C' in Chalcedon is silent, and the word is pronouced as an 'H'. It said Halkidiki, even thouugh, to this day it spelled Chalkidiki.
    Thessaliniki can also be referred to as Salonica. A name that was less Greek sounding. Thessaliniki, even by English speakers is 'Thess Sala niki'. That was also of Alexander's sister's name.

    What about the cities of Engelina, Stubera (i.e. "Pillar" city, latinized 'Stybera'), Bylazora, Pelagonia, Gortinia, Ulpiana, etc...? And it's Amfipoliteon (see the coins) not "Amphipolis"!

    • @jackdonith
      @jackdonith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      "Amphipoliteon" (/Amphipoliton) means "of the Amphipoliteans". It's common in ancient Greek drachmas to say whose coin it was. So it's always "of X", the X being the king or the people of the city. In this case it's the latter.

    • @AthrihosPithekos
      @AthrihosPithekos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pelagonia was inhabited by people of Epirotan stock before being absorbed. Amphipolis was originally an Athenian city built in Thrace. Paeonia was not part of the kingdom either. It was taken though expansion to the north. Ulpiana was a Roman city whose ruins can be found in Kosovo.

      @@MakedonskaAkropolaMKD Relating Polog to Pelagia is clearly and unquestionably paretymology. All the ancient names of the region were completely unknown to the average illiterate Yugoslav peasant. They survived thanks to the orthodox church based at Constantinople and it's diocese since the Roman state did not fully recognise loss of land to the Yugoslav newcomers of the north and their overlords and thought that by using ancient names it legitimised its presence. A good example is the "Archbishopry of Prima Justiniana and all of Bulgaria" based at Ohrid (another Slavic and therefore non ancient name).

  • @aetherion7

    Wrong. Thracians are a Hellenic tribe - hence the region THRACE. Plus some leftovers in for example Philippopolis in Bulgaria etc. As well as Macedonians are a Hellenic tribe as well - hence the region Macedonia which once included Paeonia as well of course in the past.

    Talking about Macedon in Filips time, Greece got absolutely noting at all to do. Greece was not invented, Greece is new country, of 190years existence, created be English Monarchy and ruled be German Bavarian King, So you explain first this then you talk about. Greece: (OTTO THE FIRST AND THE ONLY ONE KING OF GREECE. German Bavarian: Otto Fredrich Ludwig von Bayern, 1 June 1815 - 26 July 1867 AD) was a first Bavarian Prince as a King who Ruled Greece from the establishment of the monarchy on 27 May 1832, under the Convention of London, until he was deposed on 23 October 1862. I mean Qin and Macedon were both backwater nations existing on borderlines of their respective civilizations that then under a single ruler turned into a powerhouse that managed to unify all other states of that civilization for the first time in history and then conquered large parts of the rest of known world, only to collapse shortly afterwards

      The comparison still has contrition. Qin fought various kingdoms of equal and larger arable size. The principle reason for the successful campaigns being the careful cultivation of the recent conquest in the SiChuan Basin flood plains that permitted increasingly distant campaigning without stain to the already fragile homelands.
      To this day, the world's largest pre-industrial dam complex is located in DuJiangYan, outside ChengDu, designed by a Qin governor and architect and chiefly responsible for the domestication of the wild Min river and tributaries. Still in use with rock filter bamboo baskets that sift out silt and debris for drinking [though this has been replaced with modern implements].
      From the agricultural surplus, Qin generals were free to operate in the open, gain ground, and build outposts that were well within logistical distance. Even when a battle was lost, the denial of enemies having an equivalent capacity cut others short of capitalizing on victory with long sieges or capture of strategic locations.
      This is very different to the rapid Alexandrian conquests.

Lusathian Sorbs are living in area around Cottbus, south west from Berlin, speak German, pay taxes in Germany, but they are still Slavs. Aleksander has hated Greeks more than Persians. Yes, he has had classical Greek school (Aristoteles). But also in old Roman culture was big influence, first by Etrusci, after than by Greeks. In both way - old Romans and old Macedonians - Greeks have influenced with culture, but than were defeated and conquered by their student. Of course also Etrusci. @@unseen23221 it was proposed at some point that Thessaloniki would become a separate state but it would be a predominantly Jewish state (the city itself was about 50% Jewish although there aren't almost at all outside the city), as Jews would be moved there instead of ending up in Israel. Later on, the Communists tried that too, which led to the Republic of Macedonia, modern North Macedonia. But confederate multinational states don't really work out. The multinational Ottoman empire collased, Jugoslavia collapsed as well as the nearby Chechoslovakia and USSR. Even tiny Cyprus suffered an invasion and a division in two states. Israel is having issues with Palestinians.

      @@bojanstare8667 Telling "Macedonian Greeks" I do not reffer to the refugee population which is now dominating in the region of so called by you Aegean Macedonia (75%) but to native Macedonian Greeks who lived there before for centuries (now they can number something about 15%, hard to say), alongside with Macedonian Slavs (now 10% of the region, diminished by persecutions carried out by the Greek government).
      Greeks lived in Macedonia a lot of time before Slavs arrived there, and in spite of different historical events, the massive settlements of Slavic tribes like Dragouvites, Sagudates who ruled the area for some time etc. they never ceased to exist there.
      In 1900, before the Balcanic Wars and other disasters, the population of Aegean Macedonia (the former ancient Macedonia) looked as follows, according to Vasil Kanchov:
      35% Slavs (Florina/Lerin Kilkis/Kukush, the region of former ancient Pella/Postoł, Edessa/Voden and many more)
      27 % Turks
      23 % Greeks (Roumlouki, which is the central part of former ancient Macedonia proper, where ancient Aigai is located (then there were villages Barbesh and Kutlesh - names obviously Slavic but lived there exclusively Greeks) Chalkidiki, Darnakochoria, Serres, Veria, Naoussa (a mixed Greek-slavic Town) Kozani, Siatista..)
      And also a lot of Vlachs (Vermio, Vlasti, Samarina, Skra, etc.).
      As you See, in the former ancient Macedonia Slavs were only 1,5 times more numerous than Greeks and the region was multiethnical and never fully Slavic.
      Thats why I give the right to call themselves as Macedonians to both Slavs and Greeks, on the condition that they know they are native to this region.
      To create a straightforward link between the ancient Macedonians and any modern nation is an absurdal thing. If they were a distinctive nation, we can be sure that they partially got hellenized and then partially got slavisized through centuries.

I even talked about this with my mentor and he said that that actually can be the case but we do not have substantial evidence to confirm that. It kinda makes sense if the story about Ptolemy III confiscating the whole Athenian library and all books that come to Egypt is true. However, I read both Thucydides and Herodotus a long time ago so I can't remember whether these two historians had a different take on the Macedonians (I think Thucydides actually wrote around 4-5 pages about them...)

      Pretty much every single Greek writer mentions Macedonians as Greek. Those who did not are people like Demosthenes and Thucydides....
      1) Demosthenes, an orator, a professional liar that is to be more exact, was a fanatical enemy of Philip II. He did not call in fact Macedonians as barbarians, he only called Philip II as "barbarian"' and merely on "cultural reasons" such as his preference for unwatered wine and drinking in big parties with his soldiers which was not up to the liking of Demosthenes. Really.... Oh... did I mention that he only rememembered to call him a "barbarian"' in his 3rd anti-Philip IIi speech? In the first two he never called him such. Which makes it even more hilarious!!!!
      2) Thucydides.... he hated Macedonians far more than Demosthenes. While as a historian he strove to be moderated, in reality he failed and the instance was with Macedonians. Why? Because Macedonians destroyed his life. Read about how his famly (of aristocratic, yet tribally humble Thraecian, roots - LOL!) rose to become a major political family in Athens (great success) and how Thucydides rose to be elected a general. As general he was sent to Macedonia to protect the city of Amphipolis, then allied to Athens, but the Macedonians, allies of Spartans, got there first because Thucydides had underestimated their reactivity and military capabilities. The result? Thucydides was not just stripped from his generalship but also of his citizenship and was kicked out of Athens, never to return. Him and his family lived the rest of their lives in shame (possibly in relative poverty as well in relation to their position in Athens)... why? Because of Macedonians! LOL! The man hated them!.... So sometimes when he is angry he calles them "half-barbarians" or "barbarians".... but what is the most funny is that when he casually mentions them (i.e. forgetting he hates them!) he mentions them as a Greek tribe. Hahahahaha..... Seriously! You can't make that shit up!
