A few months ago I was listening to a classical music station and heard, On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring. I was mesmerized and have fallen in love with Delius' music. At almost 70, it makes me so nostalgic, longing for a simpler time.

Adding: it's okay with me that Florida is pictured, not only Appalachia. I felt sorry for Delius, told to make a business of Florida's orange groves...but I feel so lucky for us and the restvof posterity; we received such music as Florida Suite.

The joy, hope, and quiet energy in so many places, the serenity in others, and the sense of longing and loss in others really "sing" to the human condition. Delius has seen me through so much and is, in this moment, sustaining me through something very painful and fearful. But I've turned so many times to "Song of the High Hills" and "Songs of Farewell" and a number of Delius' short works. Why do I forget about Appalachia? The images provided here really visually elevate this piece. It was the beautiful thumbnail of the sun over the St Johns that brought me to this video. Thank you so much to the creator of this channel

Thank you so much for posting this thoughtful comment. Music such as this can change lives for the better and is the best tonic (for those who can listen) in times of distress. I hope music such as this will continue to sustain you over whatever trials, and that the wonderful renewal of Nature will triumph over all ill and be a source of inspiration and comfort to us all. After all, we are all part of 'Nature' and Delius was the very 'Apostle of Nature' represented in music. Please continue to enjoy the contents of this channel it is my pleasure to bring this to you through TH-cam. x

Dear Avideogal, If it was't for Eric Fenby's devout faith, much of Delius' music would have been lost forever. The world is full of strange contradictions and the Delius story is certainly one. (Please see Mister Fenby and Delius for full movie on this channel)
Even the established church has become a contradiction it seems. My spiritual journey is usually out there in a leafy cathedral of remote woodland or lonely windswept moorland far far away from the madding crowd. The worst scenario is that human beings are left totally to their own follies something that I have hope and faith is not the case. God help us and God bless you my dear Avideogal. Sending you much love and wishing you every contentment. Jayne xxxxx

There are few really successful performances of Delius works, by that I mean really imaginative, interesting interpretations that make the whole of each work sound convincing, but there are some such as those by Beecham that achieve this.
Groves, Mackeras, Handley and Hickox do some of the best Delius recordings. Usually with a Delius album one or two of the works are done really well and the rest are less successful as interpretations. I am trying to get the most successful interpretations on cd while they are still available.

I think it is important to note that Delius considered "Appalachia" to be the Native American name for the entire North American continent. Was he correct? Maybe so, maybe not, but as such, the pictures of rivers, whether the St. John's or the Mississippi are perfectly appropriate. The time between 4:30 and 5:00 in the video is clearly an aerial view of a broad river.

1:34-3:44 is the Appalachia I know, because I live in the foothills of these ancient mountains, and can confirm that Delius got the tone mostly right. But why are nine-tenths of the photos of the Mississippi, the Gulf Coast, and Florida? No Appalachian mountains there!

    • @thedeliuschannel

There are some Nero, but due to a limited stock of quality images available it is not always possibe to be totally authentic. Many of the images represent the St John's River in Florida where Delius gained so much influence. The rest combine to create an impression of the great continent of 'Appalachia' which is now modern 'America'.

I first heard this piece in a concert given by a local choral society in the North East of England just over 50 years ago and fell in love with it. I have not seen it on any concert programme any time since, not even in the area in which I now live (South East England). It beats me as to why as it is one of the most richly melodic and memorable orchestral and choral pieces and is of the right length not to outstay its welcome.
No doubt the fact it is based on a slave song will mean it never sees the light of day again ("cultural appropriation", colonisation etc.) in the concert hall.
