they're both excellent guitars! The FG9 definitely has a crisp, bold sound to it thanks to the FG size. If we have to do a Martin comparison: it's like putting a D-45 or 42 against one of the less-blinged out Authentics!
The FG3 in Canada is retailing for $1,160 CAD. This FG9 goes for $5,400 CAD. A value proposition to profiling the guitar would be to help folks understand why they would pay the premium.
Can't go wrong with either, and that's an understandable take! This is certainly Yamaha's move into the high-end market and we like where it's going, but we'll always have Martins in stock because theyre great too.
@@themusiczoo I'd love to see and play an FG9. Being a newer player I'm still coming to terms with the high end guitar market and the prices some of these guitars command. I love the Yamaha that I have and wouldn't shy away from another one. I haven't been playing long enough to justify spending a lot of money on a guitar but when I am ready, I'll spend months researching and trying out lots of guitars. I think I lean towards a Martin because of the history behind them. When you get into the $3k+ guitar market the options become vast.
@@steviegenoski9977 that's a great and valid point. Whenever you're ready we're here for you if you'd like guidance in picking out a nice acoustic no matter the brand!
Those are some good looking fiddles, and I love Yamaha guitars but 4K is kinda steep, what was so special about the old Yammys were they could go blow for blow with Martins, Guilds, and Gibsons for about a quarter of the money. I’m sure with inflation and the level of craftsmanship it’s probably 4K worth of guitar and no doubt Yamaha can make world class anything they make, but I’d like to see a nice Japanese built dread come in under 2k . I’m hoping for some Japanese Guild since Yamaha bought them. I had an old RI built Guild and I was in it for right around 600 and I foolishly traded it. It was the best sounding and easiest playing acoustic I’ve ever had. It was a player and beaten but not abused. I should’ve held onto that one. I’ve played a local builders boutique Dread that was around the 4500 dollar mark that was a work of art the strings laid on the frets. I love the minimalist look especially on dreads but I 4000 you can really buy a ton of excellent guitars at that price.
Agree, at this price point there's so much better competition... Martin, Furch, Dowina, Eastman, Auden, Alvarez Yairi, and many Luthiers could custom make you around this price Jewitt and so many others...
@@77guitarts22 seriously I picked up the local builders guitar because it had a gorgeous back on it looked at the price of 4500 and said no way I’d ever pay that for an acoustic. I strummed a couple chords on it and ran a couple scales and looked at my wife and said it’s a good thing I don’t have the money because you would be pissed at me. If I’d had the cash I would’ve bought it. The builders name is Danny Davis and he’s in Huntsville Alabama if you want to check him out. That Dread was incredible the strings laid on the frets and I couldn’t make it buzz nowhere it was loud but mellow and very balanced sound wise.
@@brandonjackson5865 Thanks for sharing! Nice experience. I looked him up, he seems to be a great Luthier. But as you, I also don't need more guitars in my life... Try to be thankful with the ones I have and just improve my playing...
@@77guitarts22 no doubt about that people who don’t play always ask how many guitars do you need ? I say needing ain’t got nothing to do with it, but one more guitar lol . The price point for these seems a surprising move for Yamaha. Nobody doubts the high quality, but these are directly competing with standard Martins & Gibsons.
That's the whole point as good or better at a similar price point. Although the l series were almost there already. These have more research and development 3d tons of prototypes USA and Japan imaging etc. And only made in Japan.
@@Tigerex966They didn’t pull it off though. I don’t think it sounds any better than the HD28 and it costs about 20% more. Not to mention the Martin will retain more of its resell value if you decide to part with it.
@@G_Demolished Martin has a reputation as one of the first guitars si they will always have a greater resale compared to newer manufacturers like Taylor and Yamaha, with a few exceptions here and there. I think they exceeded the martins in these price ranges in many ways, although the martin has more powerful base I believe, but mids and highs and clarity go to Yamaha. Phenomenal presentation and review. I own 3 Yamahas (AC5R, FGX5, FGX800C) and wouldn’t flinch in acquiring the FG9
thank you so much! please let us know if we can ever help you in making that happen. they're awesome guitars
Comparable price to the LL56, without all the latter's excessive bling. Will be interesting to see how they compare

Can you order one without the pickguard?
Does the pickguard look a little different to anyone else? I know it doesn’t matter, just curious
That's the Yamaha pickguard design
