If at all possible, you want a quasi linear lane with your wire and obstacles. I hope I can make this understandable. Picture your units “frontage” from above, looking down, imagine an X with your machine guns posted at the base of the 2 endpoints of the X. Why? So that between the two machine guns, you best mass casualty producing weapons cross each other so there is no way an enemy can approach your position without passing through at least 1 MG, preferably both, and with coordination with units on your flanks, even more. You want to stop or, at the very least, slow the enemy within and along your wire’s path that is also your MG’s axis of fire. This placement of the wire obstacle also ensures that the gun can be effectively employed in hours of darkness and reduced visibility, fog, rain, snow or use wearing a gas mask. Especially when required during the FPF, the gunner can rapidly, reliably and reflexively pour fire down the line made by wire obstacles.
I dont know if I had seen anything more ridiculous than this uniform with kilts =)) Imagine enduring the cold of ww1 trench warfare for some stupid half baked tradition when all the other soldiers had cozy trousers.
Hi, they are originals, the officer's one is from the 1930s and the other ranks from the 50s. We've got a few more in the collection, mainly sourced from Ebay and local second hand shops here in Scotland.
Didn't they just! Mountains of it because they were essentially defensive - all they had to leave was patrol lanes. However, if you were "going over the top" how would you like to be confronted with the obstacle illustrated - from your own side - before you crossed no man's land and faced their wire !?! If you're looking to be advancing through your own wire a "low wire entanglement" is your answer. Slung, fairly slack. about knee high it is a serious trip hazard and embuggerance for anyone trying to cross it at speed in the final assault - bearing in mind all obstacles are covered by fire - but possible to pick your way through at walking pace. Wire, mines and obstacles was my "second hat" as a Grubby Subbie many years ago.

Now do that in the dark without drawing the attention of enemy snipers
I'm sure it would be terrifying. That's why the adopted the use of screw pickets, and even then wiring was still one of the most dangerous jobs.
This why engineers have a 22% chance of survival
Are those 22 oz kilts reproductions? Where did you purchase them? Top quality historical reenactment. Congratulations

The buttons were already on. As they are fastened with pins instead of buckles they tend to fall down if you don't wear braces!
Brave chaps not using gloves for the wire. Must leave a safe lane for going out to raid or attack.
There were a few scratches, but we didn't want to use modern gloves!
how did you put Suspenders with your Kilts do all Kilts have a way of using suspenders with them?
And nowadays people be using them to chop bikers head I seen a lot of them
So germans didnt use barbed wire?

Suspenders with a kilt just looks odd to me
