      I disagree. Initially yes but branching out and becoming a multi skilled tradesman opens up many more job opportunities and greatly relieves the monotony of laying bricks every day.

    I wish I could have done this years ago. I did do short course at ableskills in Kent, but it was over a few weekends and I wasn't really that good . But I gave it a try though. There was no test at the end and I paid out my own pocket, mainly through curiosity. I'm near retirement age now. If I had to learn something, I'd start with a small shed or something

      Lol. What a load of bollocks. You know nothing about bricklaying. Never would you put a half in a wall. NEVER! And CITB would never encourage this. It's very simple. The bond on one corner needs reversing. He's set out incorrectly and failed this part of the exam. A half in a wall? For Christmas sake.

    “Craftsperson” instead of craftsman, and wearing a hi-vis jacket inside a test centre. That says it all about the PC BS you can expect. And the “skills test” is a total joke. A DIYer could master simple jobs like that in a weekend or two. How about testing them on different bonds, decorative details, arches & centring, curved walls, gable pikes, historic details like narrow joints in lime mortar, etc.. And perhaps the use of brick acid cleaner given how much mortar has been left on the brick faces.

      Chill

    • @Benzknees
      @Benzknees 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      rzl dzl - Come down to site and try managing progress of the job, when brickwork has to be taken down and redone, time after time, because the bricklayers lack the skills and experience needed to do a proper job.
      Or come down to a housing estate a few years after construction, when walls are crumbling and stained with mortar and excessive efflorescence due to inadequate bricklaying practices.
      This real and serious problem only exists because people have the irresponsible can’t be ar*** ‘chill’ attitude to life. How ‘chill’ would it be if a defectively built wall falls onto a child?

    • @cheshstyles
      @cheshstyles 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      rzl dzl - Okay, well that’s good, if you can pass on your experience and patience to them and check they’re not making any mistakes. But I’m just relating my own decades of experience of seeing way too many examples of sub-standard work, which is in no small part due to poor training and a lack of supervision. So it annoys me to see tradesmen (or should that be tradespersons) being presented as qualified after completing a college course.

      In my country about 20 years ago they introduced a clay brick that was about 25% bigger. We used them on a couple of houses. For whatever reason after a few years they stopped making them. A downside for the brickies was the builder expected to pay the same per thou price for the laying. Maybe that’s why they stopped making them because the brickies were not interested in being paid the same piece rate yet having to handle bigger bricks with bigger upright joint surface area.
