Well that accurately describes the Toronto Maple Leafs. They were, they are, they will always be like that.

I went back to studying after the 2nd, did not think 7-2 would be the final though.
I had a feeling that we were gonna lose before the game even started cuz for whatever reason the leafs can't get past a 2 win streak
for me, it was the 4-2 goal... Difference between Murray and Samsonov right there. Murray is more of what you'd call a battler, and I think Murray finds a way to make that save and keep his team within 1. He seems to make his best saves when it's tied or a 1 goal game. Samsonov is too erratic with his fundamentals also. He was all over the place early on and I had a gut feeling the Leafs would need to score at least 4 or 5.... turns out they needed 8.
edit: (not placing blame on Samsonov - the Leafs were awful - but, I have noticed that about Murray and Samsonov - and I saw it again on the 4th goal)

Haven't watched an LRF in ages. Glad to see Steve hasn't lost the ability to lose his mind when the team gets lit up.
The fact that Sheldon Keefe keeps juggling the lines night in and night out, with a dozen games left before the playoffs is mind boggling. Having 9 dmen and swapping em in and out and juggling the whole thing gives the guys a lot of time to build chemistry with the person who’s paired with them. And to have the top 6 forwards to be mashed in a blender every single game since before the trade deadline…. Time is up Sheldon, cement your lines and d pairings, let em play and build the chemistry required before the playoffs which is only a dozen games away. The players aren’t the problem in Toronto at this point, it’s all on Sheldon Keefe. Dubas has given him the pieces to succeed and it’s on him now to make something work, and I personally have very little confidence in his ability to make it happen.
And juggling goalies too... ever really had a proven number 1
Totally agree this is all on Keefe. Remember the lines he put out there in game 7 of last years playoffs ? I believe he through it !

Sheldon Keefe is a sub par coach. Dubas should have nixed Keefe for a better coach after the Columbus series.

Engvall has actually been very noticeable for the Isles recently. In fact he’s been great. 3 goals and 5 points in his last 5 games
Agree, but it's hard to argue he breaks or makes a contender. Sandin was a real loss though in my opinion.

You can fault Steve for a lot of things, but you have to agree he IS a super fan and passionate about the club. I agree when he says sometimes he wishes the team cared as much as fans like him.

There was any to begin with? They had a softer dcore than edmonton before the viking arrived anyways. Now edmontons defense makes the leaves look like peewee players.

Well, I haven't done this yet this year, here we go.
First goal against was bad luck. The puck deflected off a skate in front RIGHT onto the stick of Parise. However, there was also a problem with coverage. Liljegren left his man (Parise) to pursue the man with the puck. His defense partner. McCabe couldn't get over in time to stop the pass or cover the man. Liljegren should have stayed with Parise, and McCabe should have taken the puck carrier.
In any case, nothing they could do about this one.
Second goal, Liljegren loses control of it in his own zone. I hate when defensemen goof around with the puck in their own zone. Get it out FIRST. He needed to be in better control of it. However, Samsonov needs to get this one. It was just a shot, even if it was a pretty good one (JUST over the pad, but the glove should have been there). This one is on both Liljegren and Samsonov.
Third goal is just a string of brutal play. A weak pass behind the net allows pressure on the defense, who rush the pass to the boards. The man at the boards just flat out misplays the puck and leaves it for the Isles to pick up. A long shot is deflected in front of Samsonov by the man Reilly was SUPPOSED to be covering. No chance for Samsonov, the whole team in front of him went to sleep.
Now... not a goal, but notice how the period ends. The Isles take the puck away from TWO Leafs along the boards and just skate in on Samsonov. When the period ends, there's THREE of them all around Samsonov. Where's the defense?
The Leafs get one back, a nice rip from Marner.
The next goal starts with a bad pass at the offensive blue line, trapping Reilly. This leads to a breakaway and a great shot in the top corner. Tough shot to stop, but it was from far enough out, I think Samsonov needed to get this one too. He's not having a great game.
The next goal, Samsonov tries to clear the puck, but it ends up coming back to the front of the net as the Leafs mishandle it (again). With the puck sitting right in front of Samsonov, ALL the Leafs are looking at him and EVERY player on the ice is trying to hit the puck while Samsonov is trying to freeze it. What the Leafs needed to do here is KNOCK THE ISLES AWAY. MOVE them. They're just SO DAMN SOFT in front of their net. Where's Luke Schenn when we need him? Isles bang away at it unopposed, and it squirts in. Samsonov has to take some heat for this one too, as he started the comedy of errors with a bad pass (to be fair, it hit the ref, which was just bad luck), but the team offered him no help to prevent the goal.
Sixth goal is an empty net goal. No fault here, just unfortunate they didn't get possession.
The seventh goal is embarassing. A SOFT shot from the point, and a deflection by a player the Leafs player was SUPPOSED to be covering. The man should have been tied up, his stick held down. SOMETHING. Again, no chance for Samsonov with another deflection right in front of him.
This was a BRUTAL performance by the whole Leafs team. The offense was anemic, the defense was nonexistent, and the goaltending was vaporous. Awful. Just awful.

For the record, on the fifth goal the puck didn’t hit the ref - it hit the Leaf’s defenseman’s stick about shoulder height- they showed a close up reply of it. Brutal goal but some bad bounces and some REALLY bad effort from just about every Leaf.
I disagree about the second goal. Samsonov was screened by Lilijgren. The defence failed twice in that moment
Great assessment. I think if we’d had Luke Schenn playing instead of Liljigren it would have been a very different outcome.

this was basically a 5-2 loss, they pulled the goalie with 6 minutes left and let in another meaningless one later. 5-2 isn't good but it's not exactly the sky is falling like 7-2 sounds imo. to me samsonov didn't look great either
It’s also always better sometimes when you lose 7-2 than 2-1. Specially when you got ten left and you’ll still probs get home ice against Tampa. Nothin wrong with gettin rocked once and a while lol, it’s good for the soul.
And that 5th goal bounced off the refs head into the front of the net.

They had a big comeback from down 5-1 against new jersey back in the day. Also coming back from down 4-1 against the red wings and mike foligno scored the OT winner. I think there was another one against philly too.

He’s actually been having trouble fitting into the system since Barzal got injured. That being said, he’s still doing the face offs and little things right, but his points fell off significantly since he’s not getting feeds from EP or JT anymore.

Isles are built for the playoffs, if half the team doesn't get headhunted last season they make the playoffs. This year they'll likely get Barzal back before the playoffs (or just in time for it) and they'll roll out a deeper defense than two years ago (no more Nick Leddy sucking! Bailey benched! No First Line Leo!) with the additions of Horvat, Parise, Engvall, and Fasching in the forward depth. Who wants to play a team that has a 20-goal scorer (probably Parise) and probably a 40+ point player (Pageau) on the 3rd line? This is essentially a retooled team that went to 2 straight conference finals, and that should worry the NHL.
On paper the Leafs should have beaten the Bolts last year, and they look good again this year but they still have the same matchup problems with teams that forecheck and play dump and chase hockey. We'll see if history doesn't repeat itself.
