    The talk about the Leafs beating themselves is so true. The series against Montreal was a big tell of that, you saw it a lot in the final few games, when they had the lead in I want to say game 5? Maybe it was game 6, don't really remember but they had the lead but the second the Habs scored the look on most of their faces was "Well here we go again, they're going to tie it." and in Game 7 when the Habs scored first in the 1st period they already looked like they were resigned to the fact they were going to lose yet another game 7, despite the fact there was most of the 1st and all of the 2nd and 3rd periods left to play and it's something that follows them. This season in OT like Steve said in a microcosm of that. If you're a Leaf fan you can hope that they sort it out and it helps in their closing out series mental issues too.
    Although I would understand Leafs fans who are all "We've seen this happen all too often, they're never going to fix that." And as a goalie I'm not gonna defend him, there was no need for him to be wandering around back there, but like Steve said once the mistake happens, like how goalies have to shrug it off and get back in the game, the team has to as well and they did not.

    • @redheron4321
      @redheron4321 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe you're thinking of the Lightning series? I don't think the Leafs ever had the lead against Montreal in games 5 and 6. They trailed in both by 2-0 and 3-0 until making a comeback and losing in OT over terrible giveaways. Your point still stands for game 7 though.

    This video helped me understand why I watch LFRs so religiously despite being a Jets fan. This defeatist attitude (the yips, as you said) despite the obvious high-end forward talent is EXACTLY the problem with the Jets too, and so I empathize with all of your frustrations. Both teams also have a garbage fire instead of a defence (God do I miss Byfuglien). The only difference is that we have a perennial Vezina candidate in net to drag our sorry asses through the season and Toronto does not.
    Take tonight's game against Carolina, where the Jets were up 3-0 with four minutes to go and then proceeded to allow THREE straight 6-on-5 goals without even sniffing the empty net. I was there in person and it's more than frustrating, it's embarrassing to watch. Thank God that Carolina doesn't know how to cover a breakaway pass because we scored on three of them, including in overtime.
    TLDR: You voice the agony that I feel being a fan of a team that should be a lot better than they are, and please never stop doing what you do.

It started when JT returned to the Coliseum for the first time and I watched that video for the "schadenfroh" kicks, but I've seen some of your content over the years, and I must say not only are you good at your job, but it seems like you're constantly improving as an analyst and commentator. Even if it's not big changes, the small intangibles do add up. Not that you give a care what I think, but many like you don't do this and their audiences stagnate and dwindle as a result, but you have impressed me, FWIW.
    There are many commentators out there who are absolute homers whose team in their eyes can do no wrong and it's all someone else's fault. You are unabashedly a homer, but that is your job, and you deliver quality analysis from your team's perspective.
    From an Islanders fan, and I mean this sincerely: I think I would honestly enjoy throwing back a few brewskis and seeing a game in your company.

    It's so disingenuous to claim the Leafs are in 5th place in the entire NHL when every single team in the conference (with the exception of the Islanders) has a game or 2 in hand, and 3 teams just in our conference would ALL pass Toronto if they won them. Tampa has a game in hand, & if they won, would pass the Leafs by virtue of more wins. Detroit would pass Toronto by a point, as would the Hurricanes. So let's put this into perspective. The Leafs are actually closer to being out of the playoffs entirely than they are to 1st place in their division. The reality is that teams 2-8 in the Eastern Conference have between 22-25 points. Boston is 9 points ahead of the Leafs WITH a game in hand. So The Leafs are 9 points + a game out of 1st, but are only 3 points ahead of the 8th place team in the Conference, and the Rangers have a game in hand. SO essentially the Leafs are barely in a playoff spot at this point!

      “But Rielly was hurt”… Sandin played 17 minutes. For all his faults I actually think Keefe is a pretty good coach which is why something as simple as mismanaging ice time drives me nuts. If there is anything good to come from there injuries on d, at least we will actually get to see Sandin and Lil with proper top 4 minutes instead of getting the “they aren’t ready” answer, meanwhile Holl is getting hung out to dry (which apparently is a better idea than seeing what your fairly talented young dmen can do).

  • @mikejohnson849
    @mikejohnson849 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a long time Islanders fan I thought I would give you some thoughts on what you talk about at the end of this video, and that being how the Leafs are their own worst enemy. I was too young to remember the Islanders earlier seasons up until I began following them fully during the 1977-78 season. After having made the playoffs for a few years and doing fairly well, the 77-78 season was Mike Bossy's rookie year, and the first year they won their division. Back then, division winners got a first round bye, and then in the second round ended up losing in 7 games to.....the Leafs. It was a series the home team won every game, except game 7, which the Leafs won in OT. Disappointing for Isles fans yes, but then 1978-79, the came back with a vengeance and had the best record in the leage (what would be today's President's Trophy). Needless to say, the Islanders, after sweeping Chicago in the second round, lost to (of all teams) the RANGERS in six with John Davidson in goal!!! (Man I took a beating in school over that one!). Anyway, Islanders fans expected continued success for 1979-80. However, perhaps the failures of the past two years took a toll on the team psyche? The team was having (for them) a horrible year. Of course with only 21 teams now in the league after bringing in the 4 WHA teams, 16 now made the playoffs. So horrible year aside, we still we pretty certain of a playoff birth. Something that would not be the case today, but in 1980 it was. Even the addition of Ken Morrow, fresh off the Olympics Miracle on Ice didn't stop this team's inconsistency that year. It was at this time that many Islander fans were thinking the same thing you mentioned in this video about how a team defeats itself. We couldn't understand how a team this talented and accomplished could not get over that hurdle. Why were they struggling? It was as if the players expected failure. Then, at the trade deadline, something happened. We didn't know it at the time, but this was more significant then we could have imagined. I'm sure you know Butch Goring does color on Islanders telecasts. At the 1980 trade deadline, the Islanders get Butch Goring from LA for Billy Carroll and Dave Lewis. Carroll & Lewis were both adored by Islanders fans, and we were sad to see them go. We knew Goring was a good player, but what we didn't know was what he brought the team in the locker room. After a few games Goring called the entire team out. I'm sure I am paraphrasing, but Goring in interviews describes how he went to each of them and said something along the lines of "Guys!!! Don't you realize how good you are? Don't you realize how every other player on every other team can't understand why you aren't winning? Don't you realize how scared they are of you???!!! And it was at this time that the team started taking the ice, believing that other teams feared them. They began to play like they believed they scared other teams. They believed they WOULD win! Not could but would! And it didn't matter the type of game. You want a track meet, we'll beat you 10-8. You want a defensive battle, we'll beat you 2-1. You want rough stuff? We got a card headlined by Gillies & Nystrom, who by the way can also score 30 goals a piece. It didn't matter how the game went, they believed they would find a way and that is something that comes from within. The Isles finished that season with a 12 game unbeaten streak that jumped them to the 5th overall seed, giving them a better playoff position, and setting themselves up for the run that ultimately ended with their first cup. The rest of that run is history but included such moments such as how Bossy would find a way to get 50 in 50, or how in the 1981-82 season they found a way to beat Colorado for their 15th straight win (when there was no overtime). Listening to you express your feeling about this team, and how they have to somehow find a way to believe in themselves, I believe you are correct. As an Islander fan I fear playing the Leafs because in my opinion the Leafs have way more talent than the Isles, and should run circles around us. They do, sometimes, but not consistently. Now maybe this Leafs team find this within themselves and can go on a run for the ages for this season and playoffs, but to do that, somebody in that locker room has to convince everyone they can do just that. Who is that guy? Is it someone already on the roster? Or is it somebody they can pick up, maybe without giving up too much? We're talking about an intangible other than talent on the ice. Someone who is solid, but not THE star. Someone who has the respect of the rest of the players, and who the rest will believe when he says how good they are. This is where I think the Leafs are at this moment. There appears to be an intangible missing, and I believe this is it. You are right on when you say what you said. They have to believe they will win, in all situations, and then dig deep to get it. One of the reasons I believe Edmonton has a similar problem, which explains why they don't go deeper into the playoffs. That and some of their stars need to realize defense is as important as offense. But that's another topic for another day. I know what you're going through pal!

    The choice of play behind the net is usually not up to the goalie, the first D coming back is supposed to scream to him what to do with the puck. So UP, OVER or SET. So I suspect there was mis communication (or the D made the wrong choice). Yeah, Kalgren messed up the pass, but I still think he should have played the puck.

    The tying goal was as much on the defence as the goalie. Nobody challenged Bailey and let him settle the puck and do exactly what he wanted with it.
    Sorokin also deserves a lot of credit for stealing this game too.

    • @derps8690
      @derps8690 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, it was 100% on källgren.
      how can you possibly even blame the defense for that??? he gave the puck tape to tape to bailey. bailey also *HAD* somebody on him, which is why his shot was pretty weak… källgren still missed it.
      it was on him, stop trying to point fingers at others.

    • @barkerm9
      @barkerm9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somebody has to challenge the shooter when you have numbers.
      It’s a bad turn over, but the goalie was set in his crease. That’s Josh Bailey, a declining play maker not an athletic goal scorer.

    • @derps8690
      @derps8690 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@barkerm9
      bailey *WAS* challenged... it's why he got off a fairly simple shot, and clearly källgren wasn't set because he was beaten short side. the leafs also didn't have "numbers," they were getting ready to make a breakout play... they only had "numbers" when it was too late, but even at that, benn still managed to nearly knock bailey off the puck.
      this was just a terrible, boneheaded play by källgren, and you need to stop trying to blame the defense when in reality, there was nothing they could have possibly done.

    As a Bruins fan I don't know how you look at this team and say they don't need a coaching change. Bruins fired their all time winningest coach after taking them to two Cup Finals in Claude Julien. fired a fantastic coach in Bruce Cassidy (only one Cup Final), and look where they are now. If not the coach than a new captain or voice in the locker room. They clearly do not beLEAF in themselves when the game is on the line.

      Maybe steady for an Ahl goalie. He's not a real option for the nhl. It's not his fault he got thrown in the deep end of the pool but lets pretend he's done well. Realistically if a competant nhl backup goalie played the games Kallgren did leafs probably have a few more wins
