Starting with the simple question of, in an empire spanning countless worlds, possessing massive amounts of manpower, and having complete control of the associated solar systems - why on Earth would you ever build something like this?

I think the panopticon as a concept is more intimidating than it sounds. With enough inmates with enough time you’ll develop patterns for when one gets caught even without being able to directly observe your observers. When all you have is time, time is on your side.
Yes, exactly, the whole point is that it's intimidating even if it's not as serious as it sounds
The big watch tower is only to give the feeling of being watched, what by itself makes you behave.
To actually watch the inmates you'd use hidden cameras.
It’s the idea that you’re are being watched, whether it’s aliens, or Jesus Christ, so you alter your behavior. She clearly didn’t watch the show because this prison was not about surveillance. . . . she saw the shape of the building and made assumptions
Yep, you have to test the system over and over again in a way that doesn’t alert them as you doing so.

The panopticon effect is also a psychological phenomenon where people self monitor if they assume they’re being watched. CCTV and surveillance states create this effect.
You think we're watching you? I'm going to write that down and put it in your file!
Interesting how you drew a distinction between CCTV and surveillance states because all states are surveillance states in practice. Plus, the corporate spying by having our digital data be bought and sold.

What was refreshing about andor was I was expecting the dugen where people are fed just enough to survive. It was nice to see them get fed enough to work hard and the place be almost too clean.
Yep if the Nazi actually had the food to feed them their slave labor would have been way more efficient when they did need efficiency. Unfortunately for the Nazi the civilian German population was massively underfed by that point. They had no food to feed them.
I referring to those of groups they had not intention of wiping out but just were using for labor reason.
Other groups earlier that they actually wanted all to die I understand the under feeding but note it was underfeeding not starving as it was earlier in the war when Nazi had food to use.
Why the Ceylon starvation was cause by British racism is false. With nearby German and Japanese Sub bases in the area while trying to ship enough stuff to Russia to keep them in the War and for British to win the war they had no ships to risk over those needed to supply their troops in the pacific. And with British Population under Rationing and when US came in it's population under rationing where was the food to come from. I seen claims why not underfeed the British Troops in area or stop the offensive in Europe to feed them totally irrational demands.
It not like the Japanese were going to feed them it they took over India just see all the atrocities they were committing all over Asia.
Ceylon's starvation caused by stupid policies put in place by local leaders the British had put in charge with no sign of them wanting them to do a bad job. The British simply did not screen enough and tried to hard to make local leadership happy. Thus the famine you can blame on the British in part they were in charge of the folk that's policies caused the food shortage disaster but you can't blame them for failure to help.
Once food was actually available and with the U-boat and J-Boats bases removed it was shipped to Ceylon and in part might be reason German Prisoners under US control starved along with civilians in Europe there simply was not enough food to feed the world thanks to so much farm land out of service along with the farmers who farmed it missing for various reason.
At least German prisoners starving result of poor planing not deliberate action by US the US actually put German police in charge of running the POW camps so US forces not involved in abuse of the POW. This right after the war. But any food given to those prisoners would come from others who were also facing starvation it was a hard situation and you have to keep your own troops feed well to function correctly.

How about the fact that in modern America (the past few decades, basically the 1960s up to today) the same architects who design prisons are often also employed to design schools. With the perhaps unsurprising result that there are a whole lot of schools that resemble prisons.
The panopticon was initially designed to be used for hospitals, schools and mental asylums too.

THIS PRISON TO HOLD ME?
I've always argued that the Panopticon's greatest flaw is that some prisoners are unhinged enough to test the tower's watch. If the guards don't perpetually watch over every inmate, then the "illusion" breaks altogether.
There would of course be an array of cameras watching every part of the prison so that a few guards can monitor several cameras simultaneously so there isn't much that can go unnoticed.
Or rather, if the guards are unable to apply force to any inmate at any time, the power of the Panopiticon breaks.
The electric floor is a good idea in theory, but electrically I don't see how the prisoners would get shocked since I don't see a path to ground that doesn't also travel through the rest of the structure.
Even the third rail still needs to finish a circuit to ground if a person steps on it
@alexipestov7002 step resistance or they have some plates on the floor that are positive and some that are ground. Unless you are standing both feet on the same plate you have no guarantee you don't get shocked.
News don't travel instantaneously and perfectly.
I do not think the illusion would break.
You are still not aware when/if they are watching.
You have no way of knowing and will never know.
Did they see it and didn't care?
Did they not see it?
Are you on your own against all other inmates?
The uncertainty is what breaks down the human.
Btw this in larger scale is how police states work (*cough cough* China). You never know who is your enemy.
Is your neighbor an informant? Is your boss a spy? Are your kids loyal to the party?
You do not know, and you will never feel safe unless you obey.
You never know how much they know, and how much they are baiting you. By the time you learn it is too late.

hands down one of the best pieces of starwars media
One of the primary ideas behind the panopticon was that prisoners could see other prisoners across the way, and could report on them, or hold them accountable so none of them got in trouble. It was built on the idea of prisoners holding each other accountable to better each other, under the watchful "all-eyes-shape" that panopticon means.
The hope was not many guards would be needed, because prisoners would do better keeping each other in line, if they knew all it took was a guard turning a little bit to see them. And it worked, but only because the design was implemented alongside draconian measures that would hold the group accountable for the individual.

The panopticon is used in the prison escape mission in Battlefield 4’s campaign.
Furthermore - it’s kinda freaky when you see this trend throughout history of prisons being horrendously efficient as a means of terror.
If I remember correctly: auschwitz was only manned by five armed guards. I believe there were a few more than five, but only five were armed with firearms; each guard posted in the corner had a bolt-action rifle and the “warden” of whichever officer ran the camp had an 8-round Luger pistol.
Thing is, when the prisoners entered the camp, there was an ornate sign over the gate that read something like “obedience will lead you to freedom” - as prisoners were told that if they did their time and fell in line, they’d eventually be let out.
Heartbreaking. There were tens of thousands of prisoners in Auschwitz, five armed guards and one ginormous lie.
Loved playing that map on multiplayer conquest
Whole garrison changed it's number's throughout the war but it was between 3 to 7 thousand troops. There were couple of uprising and rebellions there, so no 5 guards would definitely not hold those people inside. There were also successfull escapes by Polish, Jewish and Soviet prisoners.
Last part is the most accurate tho, the sign said ,,arbeit macht frei" so - work will make you free. But prisoners did not really belive it to be true, especially after first couple of weeks of the camp existence.
When I heard panopticon I become ultrakill
Sounds currently like the US and our government. Sheep falling in line for promises they wont receive, by lies from a handful of politicians using fear tactics. Fear keeps the majority in line.
@@kubanazarewicz7609 700-3000* as a minor correction. But that figure is not from just from what most people refer to as Auschwitz. Auschwitz was a HUGE camp, and probably was vastly understaffed at the actual gas chambers. A full riot and uprising would've probably won and beaten back the guards stationed in the immediate area. But everything about the regime was built to subconsciously convince people not to.

The architecture of this structure captured my interest right away, I can't help but think of the complexity of the hydroelectric setup too ... as something other than a prison, it could serve as an interesting concept for floating cities / communities though 🤔
Andor was so good. This prison made me realize how sci-fi the whole show felt. Which is often something other Star Wars media doesn’t have.
I was amazed to see how many fans didn’t enjoy the sci fi. It makes me worry we will not see more writing of this calibre in Disney Star Wars
@@TerminallyChill85I enjoy the mix of sci-fi and the supernatural in Star Wars. Especially when they show how advanced the technology is, and how deep the Force lore can go.
I think the hilarious thing is that there's nothing "sci-fi" about this, it's pretty much identical to one of the actual Panopticon designs. She mentions it in the Short but kind of undersells it. This prison isn't merely INSPIRED BY the idea of a Panopticon, it is indistinguishable from one of the ones that was actually prototyped.
They built a few of these but eventually had to shut them down; the rotating interiors led to too many prisoners losing limbs and dying of blood loss whenever the cells were spun around, because prisoners have a habit of putting their arms through cell bars and leaning on them.
Silent Hill IV: The Room also partially takes place in one, and seemingly uses the exact same floor plan for one as Andor.
Have you watched other star wars media? Because it fucking does
@@Pat12379Idk if it's what OP meant, but to me Andor felt more "realistic" and human than most other Star Wars media. The focus was on the story and interactions of a few fairly normal individuals and their very small lives in a much grander scheme of things. It also touched upon a lot of things never discussed or shown in other media, there was more depth and maturity. I also think without focusing on the Force it was more of the sci- than the -fi.

Did you know that if you put your feet together the electric shock won't go through u because there is only one entrance and no exit because it has to go through one and out the other
@@attula5859That's ridiculous. You must be 10 years old. Andor is one of the worst yet.
@@ZeddicusTheMageare u kidding lol, it’s far more well made and well thought out than a majority of what disney have done with star wars, e.g. obi-wan and boba fett were complete trash, the later seasons of the mandolorian have fallen off, even ahsoka was pretty messy. If andor wasn’t even under the star wars brand it would still be seen as some of the best modern tv.
@@ZeddicusTheMageNo. People who don’t like Andor simply don’t have the attention span to watch something with glowing swords every 10 minutes. People like that don’t really like Star Wars, they just like specific parts of Star Wars.
I actually got to go to a prison as a school trip thing. We were learning about building structures and design features and why things are built certain ways and a lot of this was mentioned in that. Being inside Denver's maximum security prison was ABSOLUTELY nerve racking especially considering that both the Unabomber and the perpetrator of the 1999 world trade center bombing are held there.
I briefly worked as a CO for a prison and they had a similar setup. The cells were fasioned in a huge circle and the watch tower (also called a picket) was placed in the middle with windows all around it.

Several south korean prisons incorporate the panopticon design, as well as several more midern concepts in a really interesting and efficient way! Their staffing ratio is higher than the panopticon or similar prisons, but still engage in a lot of intentional design to reduce staffing needs as well as reducing blind-spots!
Eastern State Penetentiary was built with this design in mind, as well! Its structure is similar to the spokes of a wheel- the central hub would hold guards, and each ward was a straight line from that view point. It’s an amazing place to see!
BF4 has a good example of this design, on operation locker (I think).

Port Arthur prison in Tasmania, Australia had a traditional area for convicts, then later a panopticon style unit was built. All prisoners were in solitary confinement, and were not allowed to make a noise. They also had to wear a hood while out of the cell. Convicts lost their minds in there.
It was very advanced for the era and considered humane. The effects have been exaggerated by the administration of Port Arthur, who insist on emphasising the negative aspects of the place and have turned it into a Disneyland of horror. It was, after all, a jail.
Same for the Cellular Jail in Port Blair.
