I lived in Dalton from the middle of 88 until I went to prison in 1990 then moved back to Dalton after prison in early 2000 then back to prison in late 2000 for 11 years and this time when I got out I moved back to Texas after prison and have been living a life of freedom since Early 2012 I have a sister, brother in law and niece's and a nephew that lives close to Dalton, David and Kelly Boyd that I haven't seen in over 24 years I miss them Soo much 😭
The Latino population grew because the carpet mills would go and send trucks to pick them up from Texas at the border and bring them to Dalton to work. There was plenty of work and demand for workers in Carpet mills.
My mom worked in there with some Mexicans, and one day all of a sudden SWAT trucks and helicopters pull up, there’s people running and hiding in dumpsters, behind corners. One SWAT officer started shouting in my mom in Spanish cause he thought she was Mexicans but she ain’t, granted it was a bit dark in there lol.
I think we need to make a distinct separation between Cuban American and fresh of the boat Cubans. First generation American born Hispanics are or have assimilated to American culture. That being said I prefer a city with a greater % of Americans 😂
My Mother's family is from Dalton. I remember when it was mostly white. I'm 50 years old and Dalton was a much smaller town back then. Dalton is northwest Georgia. I'm old enough to remember when they sprayed for bugs in the summer. They stopped that because of toxins in the spray they used. And Yes, there were Mexicans then too. My second cousin married a Mexican man. There was a migration of blacks from a country, I forget which one, in the 1980's. My grand uncle and aunt, lived on Heritage Circle, off Underwood. My other great uncle lived on Dozer street and others lived on Charles Street.
Cuban can be pushy you want to impose your ways on others similar to mexicans but cubans are more loud in your face and outspoken some latin people like that many dont...
You haven’t seen Mexico till you’ve been to dalton Ga when my family visits from Chicago they are so shocked at the amount of Hispanic here I figured Chicago a big city would have many but according to my family and every one else dalton is called little Mexico we let them in by the bus or boat load here in dalton and give them a 800 credit score with a Cadillac Escalade just to move here
I think the car culture thing depends. Atlanta has a lot going on (even if it is mostly black and white demographically) but it no doubt has a car culture. HOWEVER, I do not think it is necessarily about being flashy in the context of an Atlanta or an LA (I actually won't county Miami because often their car culture isn't their own. Usually people coming on vacation bring or rent very nice cars to flash off) and trying to stand out. I actually think a lot of their car culture has to do with topography (being hilly and having windy roads) and RACING and how people want the car they race to look nice. Like I think the thing you say about folks' car there isn't really true (more people are getting and decking out luxury cars or even classics than you give it credit for, especially folks inside of the perimeter as well as suburban areas just outside of it. And you should know at this point that Atlanta has this wild street racing culture) perhaps because a luxury car regional headquarters are starting to locate there. Always remember that the south is home to a lot of racing culture so regardless of how quaint and quiet certain areas are, you'll have some sort of car culture. Another thing you aren't considering about NYC and Chicago and cities in the NE vs. those outside (minus like the SF Bay area and DC) is the fact that they did NOT grow up on being a car oriented metro or city. They have very strong public transportation systems (even at its worst, something like Philly, Boston, and New Jersey cities' public transport is miles beyond most outside of the NE and mid-Atlantic) where many people do not have to and refuse to own a car. Cities like LA, Miami, and Atlanta as well as the larger Texas cities are completely car oriented and have mostly weak public transportation (like when accounting for relative population size, sadly Atlanta may have the most developed public transport in this group and it ain't good). If most people are driving their cars everywhere for long commutes, then car cultures and flexing cars will naturally take root in very large metro areas. And as for LA being "bland"...boy I hope you are only talking about rural Louisiana. Places like New Orleans and even some of the other coastal areas a FULL of culture. They just are car driven cities.
When it comes to car culture much of California is indeed the exception, especially Los Angeles but even parts of the SF bay area. I suspect that's because the "culture" that much of California is not only most known for, but also centered on, with trickle down effect for the masses, is "elite" culture, many working people engage in car capture despite living in overall culturally vibrant places. West coast culture, especially in California, is so strongly centered on the (mass) professional moneyed classes, that it actually leads to a lot of weird counter-culture effects within parts of the local California born working class. Probably between a third and half the California working class are immigrants, but for parts of the local working population of all races/ethnicities, pushing back against elite sensibilities is culturally paramount, and is not an indication of any criminal tendency. Meanwhile for others, trying unusually hard to mimick elliments of progressive upper middle class lifestyle, to whatever extent they are able, is surprisingly common as well. California's working class are in many ways measured (on a continuum) as much by our relative distance or closeness, both culturally and geographically, from the professional elite as by anything else.
I should clarify that the "Local" California working class of course includes many established immigrants and transplants from other states as well. But these weird West Coast class/cultural dynamics are mostly a phenominon of California's diverse native born multi racial working/lower middle class and small business people. And it is also about, and in response, to the unusually culturally self oriented and oblivious (and much more heavily transplant, compared to the working class) West Coast professional class, who are more culturally estranged from most working people then probably anywhere else in the country.
Probably is an assumption an opinion based o personal belief not on scientific data the fact is california is always changing it is never the same people from all over the world move to california you say alot fancy words but have understood nothing of what you said.
@@RM360CR the "You" that presumably Rolando Manuel, assuming that is your real name or or if it isn't, then whoever this is being addressed to, is referring to, is NOT actually me at all, but a fantacy in your head! The social structure of society in much California is centered on (not actually dominated by in other ways, there is a difference!) elite culture to a truly unusual degree within the US context.

@@RM360CR Anyhow FACT: the majority of California residents were actually born in California. That's for all California residents including immigrants. If you subtract California's large immigrant population (many of which eventually leave the Golden State after getting their start here), then US born California residents are actually more likely to be born in state the average. That's census bureau facts. California's culture is indeed complex and changing, but we still have several major subculture areas (and many more actual subcultures) with distinctive regional aspects. But not only is elite culture centered to an unusual degree, but large parts of the working class and even lower middle class are also especially peripheralized (socially if not always in geographic terms) not despite but because of that. They are alienated by and sometimes resentful of the elite culture which is so centered and talked about in this state. And so, a strong car culture occurs among many such working class California residents for an ultimately similar reason as in places such as Alabama or East Texas, though the specifics are different. Yes, of course this is anecdotal though such phenomenon HAVE also been studied as well.
