  • MacGregor sailboats get a lot of flack about their sailing performance. But what's the real scoop? Come along as I sail in light air with an asymmetric spinnaker and then again on all points of sail in a breeze of 15 knots or so. See for yourself the fun this highly versatile boat delivers under sail...

    The best boat you can buy is the one you will use the most. I have owned a MacGregor 26S for twenty seven years and have spent hundreds of amazing nights on it.

      I would say the 26S is much better than the 26M or X.

    A cheaper better sheet set up for lighter chutes is use 100ft single line with a bite (at 50') through the clew and pass both ends through to tie off. Saves weight and expense and no chance for a shackle to open.

    Thx for the comment! I have watched the Havasu vid a number of times. It looks great and I’m sure it will look even better come January. My boat heads for winter storage Friday…

    Mark,
    Could you go over each attachment point of the cruising chute one more time slower, showing closeups? Also, where is your mainsheet attached to the pedestal?
    Great videos, thanks a lot! Happy sailing from Canada!

    Nevermind the snobs and purists! You are 100% right! That was a very good and informative video. The Macgregor company could have use it in their publicity.

    Thanks for the video I have been wondering about all the criticism. I was wondering how does it do in some chop. Does the hull really bang with the flat bottom?

    • @markdartist
      @markdartist  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've hull slammed a thirty eight foot 20,000 lb keel boat for hours. Sailing to wind on twelve foot swell topped by six feet of wind chop will do that. The Mac is much lighter and smaller. That said, fill up the ballast and she can take a beating her skipper won't ever forget.
      I've owned my Mac for seven years now and can't imagine another boat even close in versatility.

    Do you still own and sail Jasmine's Barq? I like your videos, but haven't seen anything new in a couple of years now. Hoping to pick up my own 26x one of these days. Cheers!

    Hi there - Can I ask what kind of performance you're getting out of your outboard? I have a 2001 26x and am interested to see what kind of performance everyone is getting.

      He's doing that to get the new jib sheet in fast and not use a winch handle.

      A beginner will need crew on 26ft. I would guess 5yrs experience to do what you're watching here.

      If you make it there. You have the option to motor across if conditions are bad. Maybe 10 gallons.

    How close into the wind can you sail? I have a 26x and I can barley get any closer than 80 degrees into the wind. I look at my track on the GPS and it seems that I just go back and forth along the same line, not making hardly any headway into the wind. I just took my main to a sail maker and he said it was in good shape. I'm running a genoa that came with the boat. It seems to be in good shape. What am I doing wrong??? Jason

    • @markdartist
      @markdartist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jason, The Mac is not known for great pointing. The genoa won't point as well as a jib because the sheets run outside the shrouds, which makes things worse. My boat came with a genoa and jib. After gaining a couple of years sailing experience, I changed over to the jib and never went back. Even in light air, better pointing beats the small speed advantage of the genoa. Down wind, the a-sail rules! And in any kind of wind at all, the genoa is too much sail. The worst performance of all is a partially roller reefed genoa.

    • @jasonmcintosh2632
      @jasonmcintosh2632 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. The Mac has some great points, and some really sucky points... all told the trailerability and shallow draft are worth the trade offs for me. I have an unused factory jib that I'll try to replace the genoa with. How hard is it to put these on the CDI roller furler? I ordered some sail lub to make things go better, but I'm alone and will have to get the genoa off and the jib on by my self. Just to make things harder, the boat's on a lift... How close into the wind are you able to get with the jib? I've pretty much just sailed a partially furled genoa into the wind, which you describe as "worse case", so the good news apparently is that I'm going to be doing a lot better! Will the jib extend along the entire length of the furler like the genoa or is it slightly shorter? Also, I have a factory a-sym that I've never tried to use. I sail alone and thought it was too much to try to tackle, but I've gotten enough experience to try it out . I have a pulley at the top of the furler used to raise the jib cover. Can I use that to hoist the a-sym or should I put another pulley at the top of the mast up by where the main connects? Where do you attach the lower part of the a-sym to? It almost look like you have a line on the front eyelet where you attach the trailer winch. You also had a line going from the other lower connection point of the a-sym to some point near the forward hatch? Where do you mount it and how did you determine what length it should be? Jason

    • @jasonmcintosh2632
      @jasonmcintosh2632 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, I sailed with the genoa partially furled but I brought it inside of the stays as you would a regular jib. It did much better into the wind, but not as well as I'd like. I just took the genoa off the furler and I put the jib on. I took the whole furler off the boat to do this... but it looks like there ALMOST may be a way to change the jib w/o having to take the mast down??? but the darn line that runs in the furler isn't long enough to allow it to take slack and lower the jib... Any thoughts about this??? Jason

    • @markdartist
      @markdartist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason, Good on you for tackling this stuff! Answer to your CDI roller furler struggles- read the manual. Its easily available online and unlike some manuals, clear and concise. The trick is to tie a line (messenger line) to the line that is too short. Haul down the gennie and then up goes the jib. I do recommend that you take a look at your jib and verify that it has a rope (bolt rope) sewn into the fabric along the luff that goes inside the furler so it won't pull out. It should look like your genoa. I hope you're as pleased with the jib performance as I am! One warning, before playing with a flying sale (spinnaker, a-sail) it is a REALLY good idea to get some help from someone who knows how. During last Tuesday's Columbia River race (6-20-17), a Martin flying a kite got blown over by a 30kn gust. It was a scary time as three crew were pulled from the still very cold river while the one lady (our PNW lady sailors go toe to toe with the boys every day) who managed to stay on the boat, got sails down and boat under control. Kudos to rescuers and suddenly solo sailor for all living to race another day!

    • @jasonmcintosh2632
      @jasonmcintosh2632 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "heavy" line that's in the furler was too darn hard to "pull down". If I change back to the genoa, I'm going to have to take the whole mast down again. Ugh. Now that I know how it's supposed to work, maybe I'll figure out what's binding things the next time I take a look at it (which will hopefully be never, my boat i presently in a boat lift at a dock for the next year...). JIB: Hopefully the jib's performance will make it all worthwhile, and if not, I'm getting good experience. SPINNAKER: When I took the mast down, I took the opportunity to put another pully at the top of the mast for the a-spinnaker. I've never used one and unfortunately I don't have anyone to go sailing with me, so it'll be a solo adventure. My thinking now is that I'd only try to use it in light winds when I'm not happy with the main and jib. If there were 30 MPH gusts, the main and jib would be more than than enough, no need for a spinnaker. I suspect that the spinnaker is going to be more trouble than it's worth, but I'd like to try it at least once. Jason

    Loose outhaul for more power, yet loose mainsheet for less power? That makes no sense.

    • @markdartist
      @markdartist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've been pondering a reply to your comment for weeks now. You're right, what I said at that point doesn't make sense. There are two reasons for this. First, the correct trim was to reef the mainsail. Second, the description of what I was doing was much too brief.
      Reef the main needs little explanation. As wind increases, a reefed main performs better in every way. Fifteen knots is definitely reef the main territory for the MacGregor X.
      On this day, my too lazy to reef trim worked reasonably well. Even when sheeted out too far, and even further out for gusts, the sail still provided drive, which it wouldn't with a flatter shape.
      Having since replaced the original well worn sails with a new set of North sails, I put in a reef in similar conditions. As one accomplished racer I had the privilege to crew for said,"Every time that sail flogs I see dollar bills fly off it."

    Nice video, just a comment, you shouldnt run directly down wind with a assy kite, they are not designed for that and it reduces the sails power. a beam reach would be normally as far down wind as you would want to use one, means extra gybes, but it is far faster
    Peppa Pig is just a normal anti Mac knob, no idea and thinks he is a real sailor, my X sails like a dream as long as it isnt bogged down with the normal crap people keep in their Macs to make them floating caravans, she will never be a speed demon, but much more spritely, I regularly get 4 knots in a 6 knot wind on a reach with just my main and 100% jib. I dont think his over weight boat would go anywhere near that.
    Just proves he cant sail well if he isnt good enough to adjust his technique to a different boat. A poor workman blames his tools, and he is a tool LoL

      ... and that is obviously why they sold so many and they still hold their value even more than 10 years out of production. So glad you are here to enlighten the thousands of owners out there to the errors of their ways.
