    Our Sheltie lives for hikes. I agree, not a dog you can just put in your yard-that’s not enough.
    Very easy to train dogs!

      Shelties are like people and very complex. They love the routine but need to explore at the same time .... Only Sheltie owners get it!

    Im a severe asthmatic. Had a sheltie for 3 days as a 9 year old child. Covered in hives and couldn't breathe. They're not hypoallergenic. The are everything that this superb video says they are. I experienced the sheltie sensitivity first hand. They should not be in loud dysfunctional homes. They are all love and empathy. I cried for weeks when my dog was returned to the breeder. I'm 57, still not over it. Love you, Laddie!

      I remember my first dog when he dies and I was 15, I still have not recovered. Thanks for the comments about not being hypoallergenic. A great point I did not bring up, good point for viewers.

    • @FemkevanDrooge
      @FemkevanDrooge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they're not hypoallergenic. However with their double coat I do think the risk of allergic reaction is quite reduced. I'm very allergic to dogs but I'm able to keep a Sheltie without problems. When my brothers' golden retriever gets too close though...

    I fostered for Sheltie Rescue for 10 years. They are brilliant dogs. My dad couldn't get over how smart my first Sheltie was. They became besties when my husband was travelling for 6 months, and I moved back home because it was easier to get to work from there (I don't drive)

    When I was still looking for my perfect fit.. I was stuck between either a Sheltie or a Collie.. I met someone who had both and asked them about the difference and I found that the Rough Collie is the dog for me, Shelties look cute but they are a real handful and extremely active, while most Collies are okay with staying indoors on a rainy day so long they just get to be with you.

    • @DogThecity
      @DogThecity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I feel your assessment is correct. Shelties are a handful, in both a good and bad way. My Sheltie is the love of my life. A Collie is a great dog, they are more a 'Dog' and not like a Sheltie that is like a 'Person'. Both are amazing! Collies are very "Chill" my Aunt has had 3 Collie and claims they are a bit 'Aloof'. My Collie loved nothing more than a cuddle, sounds good for a rainy day .......... Remember there are two types of Collies "Smooth" and "Rough", both the same personality but VERY different grooming requirements.
      Best of luck in your search, you are asking the correct questions to make sure you find a dog that works with your Lifestyle!

      I would look for an AKC breeder (marketplace.akc.org/puppies/shetland-sheepdog?) . Most dogs are not show dog and breeders know that they will selling pets. Some breeders will have adults that they are no longer breeding also for sale. Just be patient and never buy from a pet store or puppy mill. This is a serious commitment and make sure you make the best decision.

    Thank you for this! I'm a lifelong fan of both rough Collies and Shelties, and there's so little good content about Shelties out there.
    I just applied to adopt a gentle rescue girl through a Sheltie rescue org! She's either a large Sheltie or a small collie (the rescue is leaning toward the latter) but she seems perfect for me. I really hope I get approved and get to meet her.
    For now I'll have to be content with watching Shelties online and fawning over my neighbor's elderly Sheltie when they go for walks past my house lol

      When you get one, soothe her/him as much as you can, as it will make the transition smooth. Get down on the floor, talk calmly, scratch a tummy, and you will be his/hers for life. The soothing, quiet talking, and telling them how good they are is key. As I said, I rehomed four adults who wouldn’t go for a walk with anyone else unless I came along. My current one alerts me to the mailman, the newspaper, and Amazon deliveries. She tells me when the microwave or timer goes off in the kitchen-all without barking. She taught herself these things after having been here nearly a year. I think she sees I need them. She is so very, very smart-and well loved.❤️❤️

    At this time I’m without any kind of a pet. I’ve mostly had dogs. All kinds mixed breeds. My favorite is Border Collies. I never thought about Shelties. I was wondering if a rescue Sheltie will adapt to new homes. I’m 75 and know that I wouldn’t be a good owner for a puppy as I really don’t have the endurance to do right by a puppy. I hate not having a dog in my life. I want a smaller dog, one that I can easily pick up if needed. My biggest fear was needing to take my last dog to the vet for an emergency and not having anyone to help me. She was a Lab over 75 lbs. I keep hoping the right dog will come into my life when the time is right.

      You are thinking correct and what is best for you and the dog both. From the brief description, Sheltie sounds like an amazing dog for you. Loyal like no other dog. They know what you need and very sensitive to you personality and needs. Out Sheltie is just under 20 lbs, the size is perfect for you, most shelties weight a little more. Thank you for this wonderful video! How do you find having a sheltie and a collie in an apartment in the city? We’re considering getting another sheltie but I’m always worried about barking since we’re in the city.

    • @DogThecity
      @DogThecity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We have always lived in apartments. We learned how to raise our dogs in an apartment. The Sheltie barking, in a politically correct way is "intense". What I find so strange, is the Sheltie and the Collie bark at different things. Not sure if that is a breed thing or personality thing. I sort of though we had a Sheltie and bringing another dog into the apartment would be easy; we already had feeding and walking time. It would be like just adding something extra to the routine. The Collie puppy was like adding exponential complexity to the mix.
      Having said that, it was the most wonderful thing we ever did. At first our Sheltie did not like the Collie. Our Breeder had warned us about two females in the same household. After a rough start (six months) they are best buds! This morning I was in bed with my dogs and about 8 pillows. The Sheltie was sleeping half on top of the Collie and half on top of the pillows, eventually we all turned into a balanced pack. I am curious about two Shelties. Our Sheltie is most definitely the Alpha Dog. I can imagine two shelties barking could be intense. Who would be Alpha?
      Like I said I have never regret getting a second dog and I know the Sheltie Loves the Rough Collie. Shelties are just amazing! Hopefully other will comment and give you some good advice about two Shelties

      @@DogThecity Thank you for the reply! Its always so helpful to hear from dog owners that have more than one dog. I've heard that having two is more like having 3 or 4! Our sheltie is definitely not an alpha and fairly quiet so we're told that we have pretty good chance of having an easier time with integrating a second pup. But the barking does already get intense anytime he wants to play or gets excited. Thanks again for all the wonderful videos :)

    Hi, I've been really interested in getting a sheltie but I've noticed they're always described as an active dog breed that always needs to stimulated. I'm looking for a dog breed that's very cuddly, intelligent, easy-going, interactive and moderately active (one that would go on hikes with me but knows when to calm down). Do you think a sheltie would be a right dog for me?

    • @DogThecity
      @DogThecity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shelties are intense. Mine is in my face every morning to go for morning walk. I have not slept in for 5 years.
      Easy Going - Probably not very protective of home and property. I would say they are very active.

    I am thinking about getting a puppy. I have had several dogs before. My dogs were generally farm dogs working with both cattle and sheep. Now I would like a dog that lives with me in my home not tied up outside so is a bit of a chill-out dog but still can be used on the farm. I like the small size of the sheltie and their beautiful coat Do you think it would be a good choice

    • @DogThecity
      @DogThecity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shelties would not be described as a 'chill-out' dog. They are very intense and protective. If you are looking for a dog to just lay on the coach a sheltie is not for you. The personality you describe is a rough collie, but the size is much larger.

    My Shelties have all been typically wonderful! I am looking for another adult, gently used dog, as mine needs company. She is four.

      Funny my Sheltie would prefer to be an only dog so she did not have to share the humans with Rough Collie

      @@DogThecity I have been considering that angle, too. But she chews up paper whenever she finds it, even though she is four. I have more books than my shelves can hold, so I have some stacked on the floor. She chewed the bindings. I think she is bored, because she came from an adult group of five. It costs more than $500 to get her teeth cleaned, and having had two dogs, I guarantee, that is a bite. If an adult falls into my lap, I will gladly rehome him or her. I have had four gently used adults and bonded easily with all of them. As a gal raised on a dairy farm with collies, I see the similarities in the breeds and love them both. I don’t see collies as house dogs, though, knowing how mine and I would roam our acreage to run and play. I have a fenced yard, but live in town, so my home is not appropriate for an adult collie, and I am not fast enough for a Sheltie puppy.

    Thank you for this informativ video i hope you do the same with your Collie. You would think that a smal dog like a Shelite should be more easy to handle and not destroy things at home. You said that a Sheltie is like a human do you have more example? And a Collie is just like a "dog" ? and what does that mean? Would like to know how mutch watchdog a Collie is compared to a Sheltie. Iam thinking about to get a a Collie so i would be great to know the importent stuff before i get it. I have now a Japanese spitz who is a barking guard dog, and then very friendly when you approach him he loves to say hello to everybody for a long time. And he loves to eat! Bye from Doglover

      Both dogs are great watch dogs. The Sheltie seems to pick up more on People and Strange noises. The Collie picks up on every dog that come near. My Sheltie is like a person and follows me and knows how to manipulate me. This morning the Sheltie tried to wake me up for an hour to get fed. The collie just laid in bed and could care less. As Shelties are so smart they can learn how to get what they want. I love my collie as she is very simple, food, walk and cuddles. Both are amazing dogs but Shelties are intensive, my rough collie is more of a typical dog.

    Im thinking of getting a sheltie but im worried about the eye anomaly issue and the bladder cancer what are the chances they will get this? is the eye anomaly thing common? What are the odds they will get eye anomaly and what are the odds they will get bladder cancer?

    • @DogThecity
      @DogThecity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A higher chance of Blatter Cancer. All dogs have some issues. Find a good breeder to make sure you get a healthy dog.

      Mine has the eye issue (collie eye) it’s more of a genetic defect and doesn’t always cause problems. (I got him from a re home and he wasn’t from a good breeder originally.) as long as you go to a good breeder you will be fine!

    We definitely do not get our Sheltie out for 2 hours a day, but we do manage other things. We get him involved everything we do. He herds the garbage cans from the back to the front. Help me ... get a beer, throw out the cat s***, etc. He tags along and is very proud of himself when the job is done. The biggest thing with Shelties is that they want to be involved. They are definitely not going to lie in a corner all day, only to come over once or twice for pet.
