As an avid horse player for over 40 years of US dirt races, my best advice would be is that you can't cut corners. If you want a realistic chance, you need to campaign the horse in the States as a 3 yo. Let him take a couple of losses if need be, let him experience the gates, the break, the whole experience. After 3 or so starts, they should be ready as much as they will be. But I thought the whole approach was wrong with COT.
The whole point of the exercise is to try to win the classic with a horse who has already proved himself a champion on the turf in Europe. It's a task that has proved impossible so far.

I think Johnny's comment about needing a completely American dirt pedigree is spot on. Bob Baffert, when asked about City of Troy, said he saw no Justified in the colt at all - he was all Galileo.
I feel absolutely deflated. Backed COT all year and absolutely love him. Looked forward to this for past six weeks. And had a double. Lake Victoria and COT. And took American prices, so had 4-1 COT. Felt like my heart had been ripped out after 30 seconds. Like you pointed out, it was sooo bad, to believe. Just glad he's fit n well after that experience. And I for one, can't see the attraction to dirt racing for the life of me.
Nothing wrong with dirt racing, its just a different type of racing - COT is a rolls royce on the turf, wrong shape for running on the dirt - didnt take to it AT ALL. Been a good horse but no Frankel or Sea the Stars.
Lake Victoria was absolutely MAGNIFICENT, so it wasn't a total loss! In the USA, dirt racing has ALWAYS been much bigger than turf racing. Why that is I really don't know, but the history of organized thoroughbred horseracing on dirt goes back to 1863.
its good to see Irish Racing being brutally honest about how bad the whole Southwell to Del Mar fiasco was from Coolmore, English media havent mentioned it the horse should have at least an Irish Champion on top of his CV, basically wrote off the whole business end of the season on an ego trip
City of Troy had no chance after the start he had. Hopefully he has a good career at stud. Johnny is spot on about AOB never praising himself. When he wins its all down to the staff and the boys when he loses a big race he puts all the blame on himself. Come across pure class in every interview I've seen.
"Class", my ass.. AOB always blames himself because it makes him and Coolmore millions that way.. Because otherwise it would be the horse's fault and we can't have that. If the horse's fault it would mean a cheaper stallion fee and / or fewer breeders sending quality mares to the stallion. Same with all the hype. He's only the "best I've ever trained" and "our Frankel" to fool potential breeders. Had COT truly been those things they'd have kept him in training. But again, a business decision. Truth is COT can only be rated one length ahead of Calandagan - and that's with COT having the run of the race at York. With a strong tail wind that advantaged every front / prominent runner on the day. COT went for the Classic because it gave them a ready made excuse when beaten... And retired him because they couldn't risk the horse being found out as being just another Coolmore good horse. COT is rated 130 by Timeform. Many AOB / Coolmore horses have been rated higher and had over a stone to find on Frankel's 147.
the winner got the same sort of start in a stall over to the far side - he ran aside COT for the majority of the race and came through to win - so thats no excuse, he just didnt take to the dirt!
Lots of horses get out of the gate slowly and still come back to win. The great Secretariat always broke last. And watch the mighty Arrogate's awesome comeback in the 2016 Dubai World Cup! No excuses for City of Troy other than he should have been trained for dirt if they wanted him to win on dirt.

Just as many of the media and punters have been taken in. Subconsciously many want to believe in a Champion. I guess I will be comment 120. Look, CIty of Troy's last race in the Breeders' Cup was a disaster. You know who had last race disasters? I will name two. First, you have Sadler's Wells who bombed in his last race, 8th in the 1984 Arc. Or you can look at Sadlers' Wells son Galileo--who bombed in his last race, the 2001 Breeders Cup Classic, when he came in 6th. Both went down as great race horses and not only "great" sires, but historically significant sires who will be spoken of 100 years from now if horse racing is still around.
You've just added new meaning to the phrase "Cherry Picking" Given how short the careers are of European horses, they don't exactly allow too much wiggle room for many "disasters". It's called "Risk Management" But I'll cherry pick a couple that did the opposite. Generous- One of the highest rated Derby winners in history- failed in the Arc on final appearance. Well I must confess that I've been cheering for Sierra Leone all year in his races and everyone feared fierceness of course and I was really hoping that Sierra Leone would pull it off which he did but I thought with that horse city of Troy things could have gone better for him out of the gate and he could have shown a better race and I think he's a fantastic horse nobody can take anything away from him that's for sure and I wish him all the luck in the future I hope nobody gets down on him or the connections too much over this race
I feel Aiden O'Brien was very embarrassed by the outcome of the breeders cup classic. But I do feel now with justified coolmores top stallion we will see further attemps in the future. Coolmore still grabbed first and second in the race, which is staggering (what an operation they have), so congratulations are still in order. Maybe I am wrong and exaggerating a little, but I do feel Aiden O'Brien says he is training "the best we've ever had" every other year.

I’m kind of flabbergasted people are shocked by this outcome. This horse has clear stronger turf influences. Randy Moss made this case multiple times on air before the race, it wasn’t a secret. I’ve seen a lot a of excuses, like he started poorly, etc. but newsflash, if the horse didn’t take to the fast track at Del Mar, he’d been an absolute disaster in Kentucky or New York. One of the worst hype jobs I’ve ever seen people fall for.
Yeah, I saw Randy Moss talking about it and explained it perfectly. The Europeans seemed to sell the idea that it might be possible when deep down they knew it was a 100-1 shot but no one was prepared to put their heads above the parapit.
Pretty much ALL of the TV commentators at the Breeder's Cup were NOT on-board with City of Troy winning the BC Classic. HISTORY was against Aidan O'Brien and City of Troy. He's a beautiful TURF horse. for sure, and us "Yanks" are proud that Justify is his daddy.

Were those withdrawn horse's checked to see what was wrong. But allso COTs jockey Ryan Moore wasn't in form coming into breeders cup. He was favourite in few races before breeders cup but was well beaten.

European Hubris. City of Troy is a turf horse, not a dirt horse. Only someone with incredible arrogance would think that you can take an undersized colt with a preponderance of his Dam's genes and put him in against the top dirt horses of the world in a Grade 1 and think he has a chance. Mr. Ed, the talking, horse, had as good a chance. Aidan O'Brien made a fool of himself. Perhaps the owners pressured him, but he takes the fall.

I argued CoT would have been better off going for what looked like a winnable Arc before doing something that had never been done before in the Classic... For me, his best trip was 12f and he was never likely to have the pace to lay up early with proven American dirt performers. Arguably, his worst 3yo performance outside of the Guineas was the Eclipse, whereby he stayed the Derby trip very well and was doing his best work at the end of the Juddmonte. The Justify angle was just too tempting I guess but I suspect after George Washington, Galileo and now City Of Troy, Coolmore might not be so keen in future, particularly with so much Galileo in their dams.
Fallon still makes over 200,000 STERLING. 100k aussie dollar fine. His share approx 500K from winning. Most likely winning connections between them pay fine usually the case. IF not still not a bad for winning as still gets over 80 percent of purse. Sounded harsh 100K Fine but not in reality.
Maybe the European horse followers know better, but I don't believe COT had the speed to make it to the front running the quarter at 22.43, the half in 44 96, six furlongs in 109.44 . If he was able to run those times, could he have lasted to a 2min .78secs final time for the 1 1/4 mile race?

COT is clearly on the mum side. By looks, stride etc even all the americans were saying that including baffert who trained justify. It was a financial decision. Personally i would have reversed COT and Auguste Rodin as the latter has a real proper action for dirt when last year tried exercise on it. He is the image of his grandsire Sunday Silence in every way. He wont stay Trip in Japan cup will fade out of it. Too big a risk i guess for COT to get beat in turf in japan so hence the decisions for both horses.

A horse new to dirt racing without an acclimatised history/ built up resistance to the physical abuses of punishing pace of dirt racing/ accumulation of steroids/ (he was prob on lasics as was recently US owned/ trained). If you re run the tv coverage of that race you will see that French 3 y o was showing visible sign of distress/ anxiety/ high heart rate before being pushed into the starting stalls. (No use of heart monitors at the start either)

If you're a racing professional and tipped or backed him. You should find something else to do. What ridiculous expectations. I watched the American pundits, and they found it ridiculous to expect a horse who has never run on dirt to win the classic. The general consensus was that COT DIDNT look like Justify and more like a turf horse. Quite frankly it was an insult to this great race.

Twice in 6 months " master trainer " Aiden O' Brien has admitted getting City of Troy's preparation for important races ...WRONG ! He bolloxed up the 2000 Guineas prep work for the colt and now admitted to the same for the Breeder's Cup . I guess I will be comment 120. Look, CIty of Troy's last race in the Breeders' Cup was a disaster. You know who had last race disasters? I will name two. First, you have Sadler's Wells who bombed in his last race, 8th in the 1984 Arc. Or you can look at Sadlers' Wells son Galileo--who bombed in his last race, the 2001 Breeders Cup Classic, when he came in 6th. Both went down as great race horses and not only "great" sires, but historically significant sires who will be spoken of 100 years from now if horse racing is still around.
You've just added new meaning to the phrase "Cherry Picking" Given how short the careers are of European horses, they don't exactly allow too much wiggle room for many "disasters". It's called "Risk Management"

Well I must confess that I've been cheering for Sierra Leone all year in his races and everyone feared fierceness of course and I was really hoping that Sierra Leone would pull it off which he did but I thought with that horse city of Troy things could have gone better for him out of the gate and he could have shown a better race and I think he's a fantastic horse nobody can take anything away from him that's for sure and I wish him all the luck in the future I hope nobody gets down on him or the connections too much over this race
I feel Aiden O'Brien was very embarrassed by the outcome of the breeders cup classic. But I do feel now with justified coolmores top stallion we will see further attemps in the future. Coolmore still grabbed first and second in the race, which is staggering (what an operation they have), so congratulations are still in order. Maybe I am wrong and exaggerating a little, but I do feel Aiden O'Brien says he is training "the best we've ever had" every other year.

I’m kind of flabbergasted people are shocked by this outcome. This horse has clear stronger turf influences. Randy Moss made this case multiple times on air before the race, it wasn’t a secret. I’ve seen a lot a of excuses, like he started poorly, etc. but newsflash, if the horse didn’t take to the fast track at Del Mar, he’d been an absolute disaster in Kentucky or New York. One of the worst hype jobs I’ve ever seen people fall for.
Yeah, I saw Randy Moss talking about it and explained it perfectly. The Europeans seemed to sell the idea that it might be possible when deep down they knew it was a 100-1 shot but no one was prepared to put their heads above the parapit.
Pretty much ALL of the TV commentators at the Breeder's Cup were NOT on-board with City of Troy winning the BC Classic. HISTORY was against Aidan O'Brien and City of Troy. He's a beautiful TURF horse. for sure, and us "Yanks" are proud that Justify is his daddy.

Were those withdrawn horse's checked to see what was wrong. But allso COTs jockey Ryan Moore wasn't in form coming into breeders cup. He was favourite in few races before breeders cup but was well beaten.

European Hubris. City of Troy is a turf horse, not a dirt horse. Only someone with incredible arrogance would think that you can take an undersized colt with a preponderance of his Dam's genes and put him in against the top dirt horses of the world in a Grade 1 and think he has a chance. Mr. Ed, the talking, horse, had as good a chance. Aidan O'Brien made a fool of himself. Perhaps the owners pressured him, but he takes the fall.

I argued CoT would have been better off going for what looked like a winnable Arc before doing something that had never been done before in the Classic... For me, his best trip was 12f and he was never likely to have the pace to lay up early with proven American dirt performers. Arguably, his worst 3yo performance outside of the Guineas was the Eclipse, whereby he stayed the Derby trip very well and was doing his best work at the end of the Juddmonte. The Justify angle was just too tempting I guess but I suspect after George Washington, Galileo and now City Of Troy, Coolmore might not be so keen in future, particularly with so much Galileo in their dams.

It was a financial decision. Personally i would have reversed COT and Auguste Rodin as the latter has a real proper action for dirt when last year tried exercise on it. He is the image of his grandsire Sunday Silence in every way.

Both Aidan and Ryan knew they had no choice but were forced into it by John Magnier et al. In pursuit of promotion of Justify as a dual purpose sire. Shameful disrespect for City of Troy, Aidan and Ryan - especially when their real money had been poured into Sierra Leone the eventual winner. It wasnt fair for Aidan to have to take the blame on top of that. City of Troy would not have achieved anything on the turf if they had tried to wreck his head with dirt track racing/ fast break training. American horses are trained for dirt from 2yo using lasics and steroids to build muscle/manage inevitable injury. Its lucrative but shameful racing from a horse welfare point of view with which Coolmore should not be associated especially after the haunting heartbreak of George Washington. If they want to get a return fro. Justify buy US dirt mares, breed foals for the dirt grind and place thrm with the top 3 US trainers - dont abuse the Irish/European horses on quick breaking dirt.

A horse new to dirt racing without an acclimatised history/ built up resistance to the physical abuses of punishing pace of dirt racing/ accumulation of steroids/ (he was prob on lasics as was recently US owned/ trained). If you re run the tv coverage of that race you will see that French 3 y o was showing visible sign of distress/ anxiety/ high heart rate before being pushed into the starting stalls. (No use of heart monitors at the start either)

If you're a racing professional and tipped or backed him. You should find something else to do. What ridiculous expectations. I watched the American pundits, and they found it ridiculous to expect a horse who has never run on dirt to win the classic. The general consensus was that COT DIDNT look like Justify and more like a turf horse. Quite frankly it was an insult to this great race.

He bolloxed up the 2000 Guineas prep work for the colt and now admitted to the same for the Breeder's Cup . I mean this horse is the greatest he has ever trained ( Aiden's words) ,yet he messes up twice to get the animal beaten ? Any other trainer would be relieved of his duties ,methinks !
