As someone who actually works in that mall… yes.. the grab and runs and homeless bombarding the restroom all the time has left a really miserable feeling in the area. Add the fact that SHEIN and Temu have taken what has already been a huge part of the market share in online shopping has really hit malls and brick and mortar shops.

This is NOT due to ecommerce - here in Phoenix there are wait lists to get into shopping centers like Scottsdale Fashion Square, Kierland Commons, Scottsdale Quarter and Chandler Fashion Center -- retail is BOOMING in cities that are not overrun with homeless and crime.

The food court was amazing at one point. But the homeless went in and started grabbing people’s food. Security couldn’t bus the trays fast enough as the addicts would hover around seated customers like vultures and grab their leftovers if not outright pickpocket their bags as they sit.
Every time the security removes them, you have (had) all the yuppie tech workers from Salesforce or whatnot start recording and throw their color commentary into a TikTok vid. It just became out of control and the. Covid hot, and we all know the rest.. ☠️

I used to go to Westfield a lot when it was nicer down there. Sure, you had a few homeless mingling about the food court, but it was always packed with shoppers. There was even a Slanted Door offshoot restaurant near the MUNI exit/entrance.
Blooms was a nice store, Nords was a nice store, the shops on all the upper levels were all nice. Bristol Farms (grocery store) was expensive but had a very good selection, like a mini Whole Foods.

Bloomingdale entrance is btw 4th and 5th mission street. There is a parking structure across the street. So why aren't ppl coming to shop? No one gonna shopped when they refused to clean up the homelessness problem. No one gonna parked in that structure knowing their cars might be smashed in. I once assumed that SF's better terrain, weather, affluence & scenery would shield it from the problems of a Rustbelt city, such as a Detroit or St Louis. But, no, bad politics & bad governance ultimately have more power. However, all places experience up-&-down trends too. Moments throughout the history of Rome have seen that city gutted, ransacked & dysfunctional (eg, raided by the Germanic tribe, the Vandals, in 455 AD)

This is what happens when local political leaders are chosen for any other reason but competence.
political party, race, gender, a single issue you disagree with etc. Local leaders are in many ways more important than national leaders. They make sure your trash is picked up, police and fire department funding, how schools are funded, roads and infrastructure maintenance etc.
