Undervolt your RTX 3070 Ti for more FPS! - Tutorial

  • Undervolting really seems to be the best option in terms of GPU optimization for the 3000 series. Be it a 3090, 3080, 3070 or even a 3060 Ti, I’d still recommend doing it. If you do it properly, you’re gonna lose virtually 0 performance or even get an increase, while dramatically reducing heat and power consumption. Today we are featuring an RTX 3070 Ti PNY XLR8 with three fans and using a 750W 80 Plus Gold Corsair PSU!
    We used MSI Afterburner, here's the download link: www.msi.com/page/Afterburner
    The software in the background is Heaven Benchmark, here's the link: benchmark.unigine.com/heaven

      just for a base line. with std factory settings my TUF RTX3070 pulls 280 watts for hours and struggles to hit 65c. I never realized other cards went over 65 until now. I can't wait to see how it runs after undervolting. maybe the cooling fans will never turn on.

  • @blacksama_
    @blacksama_ ปีที่แล้ว +130

    After testing this for over 24 hours, the temperatures dropped by massive 20-25 degrees, the noise went down by a massive level as my fans are not longer full speed, and my FPS did not drop a single frame, instead they indeed increased by a minimal amount but the important part is I did not lose performance, you were right about the VRAM overclocking, you were right about the curve, you were right about the VRAM. You saved me from trying that ridiculous copper plate mod for my GPU that I was about to try and open more holes in my cases with a drill for more fans, saying I am impressed by this is quite the understatement.

    • @BlueCombPL
      @BlueCombPL ปีที่แล้ว

      This guide is a total-fatal BS. You MUST NOT lower the frequency curve below factory one - otherwise, you're in fact OVERVOLTING your GPU.

    • @knben
      @knben ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What do you mean? Correct me if I'm wrong but GPUs use more voltage coming out of the factory than they actually need in order to ensure stability under all circumstances, especially heavy loads. Undervolting it decreases the heat output thus increasing the card's lifetime. If you are careful, you are not compromising system stability, only reducing heat.

    • @BlueCombPL
      @BlueCombPL ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@knben that's right, but to do that, you should shift your WHOLE clock speed curve to the left. In Afterburner you can't do that, so it should be moved upwards, to make GPU run higher frequencies at desired voltages OR desired clock speed at lower voltages - that's essentialy the same. If you do this as shown, it will maintain that speed and voltages, but ONLY in that one point. If GPU hits power limit it will perform worse than in factory settings and will be less efficient.
      So, you should move your curve upwards and than flatten it at your desired clock speed. That's almost perfect way.
      I recently undervolted my 1070 to 750 mV @ 1620 MHz (+200 MHz above stock) and dropped 1/3 of its factory wattage (from 150 to 100 watts), losing only 5% of its performance.

    Glad this has worked for you + others. I have the exact same GPU & CPU as you and I'd previously used the MSI automatic OC feature to generate a more aggressive curve. I reset MSI to default from my custom profile and dialed in the basic adjustment (1900mhz @ 900mV) with +1000 mem clock and ended up losing 5-6 fps. The benchmark was at least stable so I thought I'd try your 2nd approach with adjustments to the core clock at multiple voltage points. On retry, the benchmark kept crashing.
    If cooling was a concern for others, I could 100% see this being a practical help. However, It may be worth just letting MSI do it's thing with the auto curve generation (takes 10-15 mins) and then compare the two. Thanks for the tips and if nothing else helps reassure that I'm getting optimal performance from my card... which is always the end goal :)

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well you’re effectively comparing an overclock to an undervolt in a position where your goal clearly is absolute performance and you’re not looking to improve your temperatures and/or reduce your power consumption. If that’s your goal, you should look to overclock, not to undervolt! And for that I have a dedicated tutorial on my channel, made with the same build, in which I detail how to manually overclock your card in case you’d like to get a bit more than the automatic curve out of it!

    I saw my card reach 80+C (the first time ever since I bought it years ago), so I decided to give this a go. So far, while having the same frames, I peaked at 64C instead. Rather substantial difference if I may say so, will monitor this further but for now: Thank you, this is great!
    Question though, when you say that it could usually get away with 1925 @ 900mV, does that take into account the 15mhz jumps due to boosting? Meaning it'd sit at 1940 occasionally. Or should I set it to 1910 instead so it peaks at 1925?

However, my card is at 45 degrees on idle which I think is a bit much. Does it matter, can I lock the Voltage at like 850 or will that be bad? • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The voltage is on the X axis, so by pulling upwards we're increasing the clock for a certain voltage! The upper curve is just the "original" curve, it's not in bald as you can see :) Just follow the tutorial and you'll be alright :)

    Man, thank you so much for your amazing video! It really helps a lot for me who is still wanting to build a new PC using RTX 3070 Ti but don't understand how to undervolt and overclock it. RTX 3070 Ti is one of the most power-inefficient card in RTX 30 series which draws much more power than the RTX 3070 with not much increase in the performance, and just slightly lower power draw than the 3080 but 3080 has a bigger memory and core clock and also much faster than 3070 Ti. So, undervolting and overclocking at the same time would be perfect for the 3070 Ti. In my country, the price has dropped drastically and it's practically on par with the 3070.

    - In valhalla usually when my gpu was working very loud in 2k resolution, after undervolting it was really quiet, but unfortunately fps from my own max 80fps settings were dropping around 70fps to even 53fps.
    In subnautica I saw barely fps drops usually 1-2 fps difference (so around 78-80fps).
    In euro truck from average 80fps it was unstable dropping to around 73 fps, fortunately it wasn't that visible in gameplay as in valhalla..
    Yet It's still kinda big fps drop.

    Ciao, sto provando ad fare undervolting sulla mia rtx3070 ti zotac, però quando porto il quadratino del 900 ad altezza 1900 e poi applico la modifica crasha Heaven. Ho provato anche con 850 a 1800, non è crashato subito ma dopo qualche minuto.Qualcuno saprebbe aiutarmi?

    my auros 3070 on full load gets to 81c tops so i tried undervolting ang and set it to 875mv at 1800 and it plays smooth on 68c full load but is it ok? or shoukd i changed to 900 i find 875 stable atm

      @ImWateringPSUs  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s already really good! If you wanted a bit more performance you could try pushing it higher to 1850/1900 with 900mV, but honestly your settings are already great and are the best for power efficiency!

    Completely forgot about underclocking, recently go back into Witcher 3, with my 3070ti I just instantly cranked settings to max (no RT), and boom, 100+fps, but was running into temps in the 70-80oc), and kept having random pc deadlocks, where I'd have to force it to shutdown as system became completely unresponsive. Got an underclock that suits my temps and a minimal loss to fps (talking 10-15 frames at best), and now clocked to 1710mhz at 800mv, temps now hover around 45-55 max). Great video.

    2 questions, i did the 2nd profile but now i see the temperature of my graphic card (asus rtx 3070ti )is staying on 48°C when idle and before this it was staying around 30-36 degrees so idk if i messed up something but i followed everystep in the guide, and 2nd question do i need to have msi afterburner always on for these settings to apply when im playing or not?

    • @ImWateringPSUs

      Hi there, to lower the idle temperature, do not hit the "L" key when applying the settings! You do need Aftrburner to start with windows and run minimized!

    Hey brother, thank you for thiese videos. You are doing an amazing job helping us out here :). I wanted to ask you, I saw another video from you with an rtx 3070 tutorial and this one is for the rtx 3070 ti card. I have an nvidia rtx 3070 card and I see my card going upto 1950 while intense gaming. Should I lower core clock by -200 or -250 and then up it to 1950 mhz or 1900 mhz? Thanks a lot once again for your input! Good day!

    Thank you so much! Before on timespy I was getting a peak gpu temp of 86c and a graphics score of around 14800 (with GeForce experience auto scan) on average. Now I’m only hitting a gpu temp of 76c peak and an average graphics score of 15,100ish. I’m such a noob when it comes to overclocking so this video was a lifesaver for me and my gpu!

    Hi, I just bought a gaming laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800 and RTX 3070 Ti Laptop card. I just started informing myself on undervolting/underclocking, my goal is to reduce power usage during both gaming & normal web browsing (switching between integrated & nvidia GPU).
    Does this work the same or similiar with a laptop gpu/cpu?

    Thank you very much for the easy to follow tutorial! My RTX 3070 Ti used to go up to 92-93 degrees when I was running my (heavily modded) Witcher 3, now it's around 77. I'm wondering if I can get it to go lower. I tried the 900-1900 curve and got temps around 65, but it made my game crash after a minute or so . I am now at 900 - 1893 and it seems to work so far without crashing so that's good. But anything you can recommend to get the temps down a little lower? I am not sure what is causing the crash, I don't know anything about voltages and such. :) The GPU is now fluctuating between 1995-2010 Mhz. I have a Lenovo Legion T5 26AMR5 AMD Ryzen 7 5800 PC.

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here I am! First of all, I'm really happy it was helpful. To get it lower, I'd recommend getting between the 800mV and 850mV voltage mark. The ideal frequency you should aim for is something around 1800Mhz, I'd say 800mV and 1800Mhz should work, so try that and if not go up from there!

    • @MeikeH
      @MeikeH ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ImWateringPSUs Unfortunately, 800mV and 1800Mhz makes my game crash instantly. It looks like I need around 1900 Mhz for it to run. I've got the Memory clock at +845 now and my temp seems to have dropped to 70, so that is a bit better again. Unfortunately my fps took a hit too. So still haven't found that sweet spot!

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MeikeH Try 850mV and 1800Mhz! And remove the memory overclock completely. That is for maximum efficiency!

      @@ImWateringPSUs Still crashing at 850mV and 1800Mhz. But I'm happy with what I managed to get off my temperature with 1890Mhz-900mV! 70 degrees is much better than the 93 I got without the undervolting. So I thank you once more for this excellent tutorial! :)

    with the first preset I lost 10 fps on average from 182 to 172 and dropped 10 degrees celsius from 59 to 49 , with the max fps difference on the uv beeing 360 to stocks 380 , hmm should I increase the voltage maybe or will I not really feel the impact of the 10 frame loss ? ( Mind you , I did lock the frequency , perhaps I should remove it and test without, thoughts ? )

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  ปีที่แล้ว

      59 under full load is a VERY low temperature. I assume you’re running a watercooled card, is that right? Under water, I recommend aiming for 2000Mhz or even 2100Mhz on the top 1% of cards. Around 975mV or 1000mV should be the necessary voltage

  • @jrv1326

    • @ImWateringPSUs

      You should, because this way you can raise the curve effectively instead of manually reeducing all the voltagepoints to the right! Just follow mine, it's the best out there :)
