You can clearly see he produces the sound back in his mouth, near his throat. The basic sound comes out deep and low sound from the beginning. Vocals are totally safe, they are doing nothing. No worries.
Also, he closes his mouth like oooooo vowel not open like aaaa. This takes it even lower and gives a bit more distortion, strength and a compact sound.
You can see how he is closing his mouth a bit more in every scream to take it again lower and more powerful.
You DO NOT need more air to produce it that way. His mouth is quite close as i said and in every scream a bit closer. Very clear not much air is coming out. Thats how he keeps longer in his first growl and his last 4 growls in one breath
If it works for you, you are welcome, if it doesnt, is fine. But always RESPECT

The crazy thing Ken is Alex can sing clean too. He just doesn't most of the time, but has shown in his hip/hop covers on here that he is capable. Its not big yet, but I feel the next wave of Heavy Metal singers will be a combination of insane gutturals and clean singing.
Of course, this is what a lot of modern metal bands are trying to do, but I am not talking about Pop Vocals or Screamo. There is a difference in Heavy Metal of sounding like whiney pop and singing Heavy Metal Clean along with gutturals. And I subscribed... Its a solid opinion for someone that doesn't have Heavy Metal as their preferred style. Good stuff man...

Kinda spot on about the technique he uses. False cord screaming is the base of it. On top of that, you shape your mouth in ways that create different overtones to get it to be higher or lower in register. Plus maybe some additional techniques (like tunnel throat).
Alex does (or at least did) online courses on this btw. No live courses, though, just video lessons. Still very helpful. Btw, since you asked elsewhere about the masks: I guess it's in the same vein as the tattoos, muscle and all that. He said (in his course) that when he decided to be a Deathcore vocalist, he went all in and tried to fully personify, I guess, the stereotype of it. So they do play into that idea of being brutal, with gory music videos and all that. Though one should remember that that's just a persona as part of the art. Not unlike horror films.

  • @MathewAdlerSJC
    @MathewAdlerSJC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There is a way to reach low gutural vocals. It took me a while to learn.
Part of the sound comes from the vowels your using like a mix of U, E and the consonant R, mouth with a very closed U vowel and with the tip of your tongue at the palate like a R (like the R at the and of the word Door). Try to restrict the air flow the most as you can with this weird vowel shape.
The other part comes from using the actual voice, could be a fry, a false chord technique, inhale or any drive that reach low notes and feels comfortable.
Then you play with that and find different sounds.
But Alex is a monster, he was born with this gift, only a few people with the right type of larynx can reach those low growls like him, it needs a lot of space in your voice box to reach this low with exhale technique

    Speaking of Cookie Monster vocals...
Randy Blythe of Lamb of God is well known for his “cookie monster vocals”. He's such a great metal vocalist, which is funny, because he is known for not actually liking metal (he's a punk guy - even though he's the vocalist in one of the biggest current metal bands), and he became the front man of a metal band after jokingly mimicking the style, only to find out he was actually really good at it.
Randy is also known for going to prison after pushing a fan off the stage in Prague out of self defense. The kid later died from related injuries, and Randy spent time in prison before he was finally found innocent.
He really has an amazing journey and story, and the dude is pushing 50 now and still kills it on stage. His vocal style is very crispy, and most of the time you can understand all of what he is singing/screaming.
The song Vigil is an old one, but it really showcases both Randy's high screams and low gutturals. th-cam.com/video/-9EMpbsKEw4/w-d-xo.html ← this is also from a performance in Canada ;) and it shows one of their famous big circle pits from the fans.
th-cam.com/video/3JB3IqGDnB8/w-d-xo.html ← This is Lamb of God performing their song 512, probably one of their most recent live shows available online. The song is about the time Randy spent in a Cach Republic, and his cell number was 512.
th-cam.com/video/P5hImIVSIKM/w-d-xo.html ← And this one he joins Suicide Silence on stage and does the vocals for one of their songs. He has great energy, and one of the best things about Randy is he does a great job of involving he crowd, which you can see at the end when he jumps in!

I do guttural vocals similar to this and black metal style. all I can say from experience is that you'll sound pathetic unless you practise, warm up lots or just are performing regularly. I can't explain how I do it beyond that i found a way to start with something that sounded like throat singing, wherever that originated idk. I feel like most people could actually do it and the process of learning breaks down the magic of it all really. it's not that hard, it just sounds so foreign. The singer of Thy art is murder is an absolute boss with vocals as well i highly recommend son of misery by them.

Check out Hollow Prophet- Disembodied Phenomena or Shadow of Intent - Malediction. Ben Duerr is a hell of a good vocalist, easily my favorite of all time

I'd like to see you react to a Daughters performance. Honestly I prefer the studio vocals but the live performances are so spitefully raw that I think you could use it as a fantastic example of a powerful performance.

Geoff Castellucci has his own TH-cam Channel and does some videos on subharmonic singing and other interesting technical stuff. Could be right up your alley as well.
Oh and maybe you might want to take a listen to his version of "The headless horseman".

Please do Mike Patton doing I Started a Joke, or Ashes to Ashes. He has one of the most extensive vocal ranges ever!
