    This is the only video that explained it to where I understand the line and the load, and 240 vs. 120 and where everything should land properly and to read the directions of course. Thank you.

    very well explained and in detail, the only thing I would have done was marked the white wire with either black or red tape to show that it is being used as a hot wire, not a neutral.

    • @jamesborton9237
      @jamesborton9237 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also would have marked the wires as dictated by the NEC. Your choice was with black or red tape. I often use black or red heat shrink. I have also used black or red permanent marker. In my adopted standard of consistency, I always put my Red wire on the Right side. So if using 2 wire romex, I would heat shrink (mark) the white line conductor RED, then match up the RED load connector and land on the RIGHT side. Of course, black line and load conductors match on the left side. This makes for a tidy installation and logical troubleshooting if ever needed.

      @@jamesborton9237 It deoes not matter since both "red" and "blcak" wires are connected to the exact same buss in the main panel and both carry IDENTICAL 120 volts VAC.

      @richardm.9821 if it is 240 volts, red and black are NOT connected to the same bus in the panel.

    Folks, please don't do what this guy is doing!
    First off, NM cable, AKA Romex, should never be run outside where it can be exposed to water or sunlight. Anytime wiring is run outside, it needs to be protected in some sort of watertight conduit. Most often with AC disconnects, non-metallic flexible conduit, AKA Carflex, is used to run the conductors from the disconnect to the AC unit.
    Secondly, the Romex that this guy is using is way too small to feed an air conditioning unit! The Romex on the left that he is using to feed this disconnect appear to be 12 gauge and the Romex on the right leaving the disconnect appear to be 14 gauge! This is very dangerous and it is bound to cause a fire down the road because the conductors are not large enough for that amount of current. The conductors feeding the unit need to be at least 10 gauge and may need to be sized up to 8 or 6 gauge depending on the amperage rating of the unit and the length of the run from the panel.

    Maybe it's different where you are , but I believe the general code is that 12-2 is not acceptable for 240 volts. By code you're supposed to use 10-2 for 30 amps. But maybe it's different where you live.

    Wouldn’t a 2 pole breaker be a 30 AMP minimum? Which would require a 10 AWG minimum. But you said you’re running a 12 AWG.

    • @rickyjewett6082
      @rickyjewett6082  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The disconnect is a 30 amp disconnect. Being a 30 disconnect means I can use the disconnect for any equipment or appliance 30 amp or less. My a.c. unit needs only 20 amps. Therefore I ran number 12 wire. A 2 pole breaker is not a 30 amp minimum. There are 2 pole 20 amp breakers and there are even 2 pole 15 amp breakers. I hope this answered your question.

    • @kiwiswat
      @kiwiswat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correction. You need a 10 gauge wire. 12 awg wire is only rated for the 80% of 20amp. 10 awg is rated for 80% of 30 amp. So if your AC pulls full 30 amp, it needs 8 awg wire. If less, then 10 awg. But if it pulls 20 amp, you need at least 10 gauage. Romex is also not allowed exposed on the outside because it is not rated for damp/wet areas. Actually Romex is not allowed outside even if it is in a conduit. For that you need the UF wire, unless you run the Romex from the back to the box similar to a flush mount outlet or light on the exterior of the house.

It seems like the pull fits snug in the off position but it’s really loose in the on position. Is that normal or could it be a bad disconnect. The wires are in the correct line and load connections so that’s not the issue
