They were very close in the Manga. Mikasa used to be carefree around her and had a huge respect for Sasha instincts. It was that few moment between them two that we could see a humanized Mikasa who life didn’t run around Eren 24/7. Sasha was the the joy of the Manga and she was a secondary character people would never imagined dying… I think that’s the reason her death was so meaningful for lots o fans. It took many people out of guard
In the manga, Eren is also much kinder to Mikasa at the beginning, and it was much clearer that he loved Mikasa and just didn't say it, with when half the characters always said that she was Eren's beloved or his girlfriend, he never he cared and sometimes he even acted as if he really did haha

That part where Mikasa recalls Sasha's instinct... Sasha's death is even more frustating when you remember her instincts. She did noticed a sound when Gabi was boarding the ship. The one time nobody paid attention to her :(

I loved how friendly the Chemisty was and how it evolved into sisterhood So many people view Mikasa as so simple and singularly focused on Eren but if you’ve noticed the only two times she’s cried was for Armin and Sasha’s deaths showing that Eren may be her priority but she still cares massively for others around her……… And I never noticed until now that Sasha repeated her phrase….😭 And her still leaning on Sasha in a way at her grave hurt so much more than I ever thought…… And Sasha learned how to be brave,strong and fearless from Mikasa like when she saved that girl from the village….. I’m glad her death was a major point that led to many events later in the season it shows how much of an impact she had and how loved a person and character she was…….

A lot of characters had a sense of Humor, Historia went from being bubbles and smiles to being like Eren and almost emotionless. even with Hange dying, they died at the end of the show basically and went out in a blaze of glory...So his excuse doesn't really make sense since he wanted to kill Sasha off WAYY before..and I just think he finally got his chance and took it.
Sasha was actually supposed to die long ago. When she rescue that girl back in Rakago Village she was supposed to sacrifice herself for the girl to escape. But the Director beg him to not kill Sasha yet. Personally, it was a shame really. If there was one person that could help Mikasa live through her days without Eren, it's Sasha.

Her death started so many things, so it made the manga+anime richer, deeper and more well written. Plus we know the story of Gabi, too. A lot of us fans, including me, love Gabi, too. You don't have to be them but there are plenty of people. Sasha's death made the anime a lot sadder, too. If anyone doesn't like complexity or well written stories then he/she should just watch Doraemon and Tom & Jerry. One other thing I read somewhere: People who hate Gabi, missed the whole point of AOT. Some even sent death threats to the voice actress.
