He was told that they were devils. But after he attacked the walls and caused so much death and despair for the Islanders, he realized that he himself was the devil from their point of view. Which is why he wants to die but sadly he can't because of his insane plot armour.

Honestly, the author planned to have her killed earlier in the series in a gruesome way, probably ripped apart and eaten by a titan. Bad enough that one of his editors cried in the bathroom after hearing it and convinced the author to change his mind. She was meant to die so in a way I'm glad it was from a bullet rather than killed by a titan. RIP.

Being in the military, I always feel some excited terror when I come back and watch this. I've seen some weird stuff on parade but this would be legendary.

One of the rare scene that was done better in the manga IMO. The instructor's face was just gold; like he couldn't even fathom how something like this could ever happen.
The reason Reiner describes these days and this scene so harshly is because he might’ve actually enjoyed them. He truly laughed, played, and got along well with everyone. That’s why, looking back on it, it must hurt to know that he actually had a decent time while they were training, but that is in conflict with his duties as the Armored Titan, furthering contributing to his overall conflict.
I heard that they were actually gonna kill Sasha off in Volume 9, but then the editor went and cried in the bathroom after they presented him with that ending and they were persuaded to change it. (Source: AOT Wiki)

Reiner doesn’t believe they are devils at all, he just pretends to hate them so no one in his family gets hurt.
It’s not that hard to understand, in short, he was just being sarcastic. No, he was not frightened by Sasha and her potato, it’s the fact that there isn’t anything evil about it to begin with, just as there isn’t anything evil about Eldians.
