  • Tuesday 2nd April 2024:
Taking the train from Hereford, I changed at Droitwich Spa for the short journey on to nearby Kidderminster Station. Next to this modern looking building is the older station of the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) - where you can ride a steam train up to Bridgnorth. I'll definitely come back here one day to do a video of the SVR!
About a mile's walk from the station, I reached the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, which stretches 46 miles from Stourport on Severn to Great Haywood Junction where it joins the Trent & Mersey Canal.
Today, I walked the 3 miles down to Stourport, to see where the canal starts from the Severn, at a set of both wide and narrow locks. It's a very pretty canal and surprisingly wide for most of the 3 miles that I walked. A couple of locks and numerous old bridges - so there was plenty to see along the way.
The towpath was variable - nice hard path sometimes, but the almost inevitable (this time of year at least), muddy sections too. I'll return to the canal soon, to explore it going North from Kidderminster. Definitely a canal I'd love to cruise down with Gladys - when she's finally completed!
    Hope you enjoy the video,
    Jeff
By the way, if you do enjoy the video, then please consider subscribing - it really helps me to grow the channel!

Thanks Iain!, by the way, I had some more photos of Gladys yesterday from Aintree Boats - showing the work done inside the boat recently. I'll post them on here soon - suffering with a nasty head cold at the moment - so me head's thumping too much right now ☹️

Another gem Jeff , beautiful footage. Felt i was there myself.
On an aside boaters in Ireland are up in arms at the moment, the annual fee for berths on the Shannon have gone from 250 to 2000 in 12 months naking it very hard for people who live on their boats

Thanks very much Mick - lovely comment and much appreciated! Incidentally, I converted this MP4 video to a higher spec before uploading to TH-cam - did you notice any improvement in picture quality?
From 250 to 2000 euros? Thats a huge increase - although just 250 does sound a little low - but 2000 sounds extortionate.

@@Gladysthenarrowboat Now that you mention I actually did notice a difference in quality. As I was watching it I said to myself this imagery is really standing out . I was going to ask you what sort of camera kit you were using as I thought the quality was very good. So perhaps the new spec did indeed make a noticeable difference, by the way what recording equipment do you use ?

Thanks for getting back to me with this Mick. That's good to know!👍
As for equipment, I use a GoPro Hero 10 video camera - these have an attachment for fitting to various stands / clamps / tripods etc and are probably best suited to being an action camera rather than a static one. The Hero 12 is out now, and there are other similar makes available too - some reviews say they outperform the GoPro. In time, and certainly once I am on the boat, I will need a second camera (Though I can use footage filmed on my phone as well), and at that point I will probably buy something better, with an optical zoom and external microphone. The Hero 10 has several mics built into its body - so when you hear me talking over a video, I am usually speaking directly behind the camera as I'm filming.
By the time I get home, I will often have 50 or more video clips saved on the camera which I need to download into my computer. I then open my editing program - I use Cyberlink's Power Director 365, and import the downloaded clips onto a new file. Then I have to watch/edit/remove the clips and put any subtittles / voiceovers on, and add fades/other transitions. It takes ages sometimes - and you need a powerful machine to run it smoothly.
Anyway... last week, after getting to a finished video of 20 minutes, I clicked on the button to stitch the lot together as one composite MP4 file, which could be uploaded to my TH-cam channel, for me to set publishing date etc. PD 365 is updated every month (sort of like Windows is) and the most recent update seems to have affected videos with subtitles - because after uploading to TH-cam, I double checked the finished film and the subtitles had gone super large and out of place. I tried again but same result. Very frustrating because uploading a 20 minute video takes me several hours with the dreadful internet we have here. Eventually, after failing to find a solution online, I thought of saving the MP4 under a higher resolution - and that worked fine... although the file at the end was 4 times larger than normal (2.0 GB) and so the Staffs/Worcs video took over 9 hours to upload (for a 20 minute film!). I am still looking into the issue - but at least it seems that the overall quality was better!
For still-photos, I either use the GoPro, or else one of my Nikon SLR cameras. These pictures are pasted onto the video where I want them, before the composite MP4 is created. (As are sound effects / occasional background music and overlays, such as arrows).
Sorry for the over-long answer - but now you know! 😁

That canal looks really picturesque Jeff. Must pay it a visit and have a walk sometime. The railway is something we’ve been meaning to do for a long time. Perhaps we could join forces on that one?

Thanks Gerald! Yes it is lovely - although I think you guys might be better starting from the Stourport end, instead of Kidderminster,
I'd love to go on the SVR - I have done so before but it was many years ago and it was great. They run a mixture of steam and diesel trains but its all old-stock and old carriages. The scenery it goes through is stunning!
A joint expedition certainly sounds like a nice idea - we'll liaise about that soon 👍

Hi Jeff, hope you are well mate. A lovely stretch of canal there and the weather played its part too by the looks of it. Definitely one for the Brompton if the rain ever stops and the mud goes away and definitely a trip for Gladys as well. I've heard it said that the guy who created the signs for Bullock Lane bridge was hauled up in front of management and thoroughly lambasted for his spelling mistake on the bridge signage and apparently as he left the office and handed in his notice he said "I've had enough of this Bullocks" and stormed off. Not sure if this is true or it's just me talking Bullocks. The fair at Stourport has been there forever. I used to take my older children there many years ago and my youngest about 5 years ago. It's called Treasure Island now but it used to be known as Ripleys. Always a great day out in Stourport on Severn when the weather is good. If you don't mind I'm going to rename this video "Two Pubs and a Chippy and I ended up with Cake" What do you think?. Enjoyed the video as always Jeff, see you in the next one. Take care Jeff 👍

Hi Dave, Thanks for the lovely comment, - as usual! I'm just getting over a head cold actually - possibly caught it when out filming the Staffs/Worcs video.
Great story about the Bullocks - there must be a reason for the missing S - and perhaps you have heard the true explanation!
Ah, yes, the fair did have an air of being a permanent-fixture about it. Yeah, very nice canal indeed. I will return to Kidderminster to resume the journey northwards before too long. Fingers crossed this bloody weather goes away!
I'm very happy with your revised title Dave - and I'd probably have had a lot more views by now if I'd called it that from the start!
Cheers Dave - I hope you've had a chance to try out the new bike!👍

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Dave! This crap weather is really getting me down now... I see reports predicting heatwaves but even if they happen, I imagine we'll be back to rain and wind soon after.
I have just discovered that the original theme music from Channel 4's daily Tour de France coverage in the 80s and 90s is available on TH-cam. Been listening to it over and over as it takes me back to when I was a club cyclist and we all had our Tour heroes. I was a big fan of Fignon and Delgado. I never knew at the time that the music was written by Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks.
I'm looking forward to getting my road bike out again and reliving my past - so let's hope we both are lucky this weekend!
