Oh my, you've just taken a 60 year old back to her childhood and into her mothers kitchen. I remember my mam had the hand whisk (used weekly as she baked every week, the multi mouligrater (used at every opportunity I could think of to get it out the box, my fav item as a kid), the tomato matic (used mainly around party time/christmas when we were having buffets) and then the saw (I never actually seen it being used, it just sat in it's box on a shelf in the pantry). Thanks for the memories😁👍
I still use a hand whisk. I miss the mouli grater, it gave up the ghost 10 years ago. Mine, (my mums!) was earlier than this plastic one, all metal. But i still have my 35 year old box grater.
@@JustSad66we had the metal mouli greater, along with a hand whisk, though we mostly used a Kenwood Chef, in fact we wore out the first one and I inherited the last one with many of the slow speed attachments like the orange peel slicer (useful when cooking about 10 kg of Savile oranges), the sausage stuffer and the cream maker to name a few.
We have a Mouli grater. It's stainless steel. It was my grandparents. Now, my mom has it. Then, it'll be mine eventually. Still works like a charm. The older stuff usually does compared to new stuff today. We always use it when we make pimento cheese. We always use the fine grater insert.
I have my mom's original dating back from the sixties/seventies, almost chucked it out, but it is really handy. I had misplaced it, bought a modern one and it doesn't work half as good as the old one.
Safty concerns aside, that Kitchen Robot is a great piece of early 20th century engineering. Versatile and it works great for most applications. I was disappointed you didn't try to grate any cheese though with it or the grater.
What's really interesting about the tomato gadget is that it hasn't become outdated because of how it functions or the material used but simply because that kind of presentation of tomatoes has become outdated
It's serendipitous that I found your channel the same week that I found a vintage Mouli hand grater at a local thrift store. Mine is a bit older so it is all metal, doesn't have replaceable graters, and I'm in the process of cleaning and restoring it. Definitely good to look at some more vintage kitchen utensils if you want things that work well and last a long time, however some can be a bit overly specific and bulky resulting in clutter. For things I plan to use frequently, though, I do aim towards manual style tools in the kitchen. Thank you for the videos, by the way!
I grew up in the same house my dad and my grandma grew up in. That meant that at the back of our cupboards were kitchen tools dating back to the 1930's. Special cake-slicing tools, a 30's old hand-crank grater like yours, and an electric mixer from the 50's that still worked and was used regularly for deserts.
My granny had the multi grater which my mum bought for her at the Ideal Home Exhibition, I think in the late 60’s. She used to love when I stayed over on a Saturday night so she could peel the carrots, turnip etc and I could use the multi grater and she could start her huge pot of soup for the whole family coming for Sunday dinner. The only alternative then was a hand grater which was hard work when you had a lot of veg.
I've still got my grandmothers hand whisk like you used here. It's great. I don't have to take out a big electric thing for smaller tasks. It's easy as heck to clean. And it's so easy to turn. You'd think something like that that's over 35 years old would give you alittle trouble, but no, it turns with almost no resistance it's amazing.
This was wild for me, every time you brought an item out I instantly remembered them from my childhood in the 80's, never thought about them since then, but seeing them here made me quite nostalgic.
Haha, just like it was snatched outta grandma's kitchen! She had the rotary drum grater, the tomato flowerator and the manual spinny whisk. Never used the Tomato flowerifier but the other two was used on a weekly basis. The rest was missing from her kitchen. Amazing, felt like travelling 40-45 years back in time! Edit: Forgot, the drum grater was a solid performer every time but the manual spinny whisk was most exciting to use, b'cuz almost always it was for whipping cream for some dessert!
We had a mouli grater when I was growing up. It only had one drum that couldn't be swapped out and we used it exclusively for cheese. I've been looking for one for over a decade and now that I finally know what it's called, I can get one again. I loved that thing
I remember using the "Mouligrater" in my grandmother's kitchen. I loved grating cheese with that thing when I was a kid. I may have grated too much of it sometimes... Hers was fully metallic, and I never heard anybody calling that a "mouligrater" before this video, but it was definitely "Moulinex", a very popular brand in France.
Onlyrecently my mum purchased that very hand saw for frozen foods at a charity shop. I found it was the only thing that i could cut my frozen blocks of Herring roe's. Loved it.
With items made of plastic, it is always a good idea to wash them with warm water and detergent to clean off the mold release. A platic mold is sprayed with a "release" (a non-stick spray I think) so it will come out of the mold easily. I would think it wouldn't be healthy to ingest that. A nice, clean bandsaw is great for cutting frozen meat. Not that many people have one of those in their homes. I remember my mother using one of those manual egg beaters (whisk you called it) and it was always a lot of work for her. Us kids bought her an electric one for Mother's Day and she loved it. Oh! My German partner had one of those mouli graters. We used for cheese and nuts.
I used to watch this channel when I was a kid, the first video I seen from this was him turning coke cans into a semi truck, it's good that this channel hasn't changed much, it keeps my childhood memories alive

I have the tomato flower cutter thingy! It came in a party set that my mother bought in the 80s! It still works great...but we only ever use it if we have big dinner parties which happens once every blue moon 😅😂
My hand mixer is from the mid 90s, my nutcracker is just like a pair of tongs, my grater is just a sheet of plastic very similar to how that kitchen robot does it, my can opener is just four pieces of metal. All of them work perfectly. Simple and functional. I also have one of these egg "violins", you open it, put the egg in, close it, and the wires slice the egg. I've also used these hand crank graters before, but usually full metal ones.
The fact that the Kitchen Robot is this versatile and this efficient is commendable. Obviously not perfect, but I can imagine this would save clutter on kitchen tools.
I have a Japanese style can opener. I got so sick of moving parts breaking on my can openers, i found one without them. And i've had it for a decade. Simple, all steel construction. Mandolins like the kitchen robot are great! I love using mine to prep veggies for the week, but it looks a lot sturdier. Curious to see similar features! Unfortunately, it'll be a while before we start seeing zoodle makers on a vintage video. Noodle soups are fun with veggie noodles, though XD Got to find myself a juicer like that, though! Very sturdy looking!
I miss a rotary hand mixer. I used them so much as a child while teaching myself to bake cakes. Used my mother's and her mother's rotary beaters from the 1930s and 1940s.
Hello Dave! My favourite is the Mouligratter because I still have the one my grandmother got for her wedding in 1938 ! Back then it was all metal and it still works great !
The last gadget - multi mouligrater - or something very much like it is still in use for hard-ish cheese grating, like the ones in Olive Garden restaurants for the cheeses for salads and such.
I've been watching ever since you made the OG flaming pumpkin and carrot recorder videos, you never fail to entertain me and it's cool how you've kept the same music for the videos. Keep up the awesome work, it has been a pleasure to see this channel grow. 💪
Seeing these i realize that most of today's kitchen little robots are just electric-junk compare to most of "old" inventions. Great video! I am looking to get some similar stuff in near future.
Just yesterday I was thinking about the hand powered whisk, they worked so quick. You can put the kitchen robot on a bowl when slicing vegetables. The sides are made for it. You can still buy the moulinex grater. There are other brands too.
These are really cool! the kitchen robot being rather dangerous seems like it was very ambitious kitchen multi tool, though does lack in some regards to a mandolin slicer. Although i do love how it can be a dough cutter for either fancy breading layers, Or pasta strips.
Great to see another video from you Dave. Loved, loved, loved the vintage gadgets. I remember using a few of them as a kid. Now if only they'd make a new version of that Kitchen Robot with either a safety glove or something to safely hold the produce while cutting.
My electric grater has the same parts in it, but of course it's electric which is less work. I remember having to turn the little handle on my mom's manual mixer for eggs, etc. My favorite utensil would be the tomato slicer making those cute designs in the tomato. Good job finding interesting things for us to see, Dave. I like your accent too, since I'm in the U.S.
You’re like the only life hack TH-camr I know that isn’t super hyper or anything you just get straight to the point you see this is why you are the best life hack TH-camr
The halway striped cut on the kitchen robot allows for salt and vinegar and other such things to permeate whatever you have just sliced - much better than it would a solid slice... It actually makes a lot of sense, just as the wavy effect from the serrated blade offers the same thing but with more surface area and geometry rather than physical gashes that go beneath the surface...
Great video! I have that moulinex grater from my grandma and I still use it often instead of all the electrical kitchen devices. Also the mixer is very handy for doing quick mixing jobs. Nothing wrong with old devices, only thing you will need some muscle power!
There are modern versions of a couple of these things that I know of - the rotary whisk and the grater thing with the "barrel type" attachments. It would be interesting to compare the "modern" version and the older version.
Yes indeed! I've used the modern mouli grater in a recent video and I was wondering about doing a comparison video. Thanks for letting me know it's something you'd be interested in, I'll plan out a video, so watch this space..
I have a vintage ice cream scooper from my great-grandma's era, unlike other modern versions of it, you push it with your thumb to get the little ball of ice cream out instead of your entire hand
Dave, a couple of years ago me and my brother watched your videos and just kinda forgot, and when I found your videos on my recommended a wave of nostalgia fit me
Absolutely love this guy, he has such a nuce vibe, when i clicked the video, i was so hapy, dont hive up on this, i hope you enjoy doing this stuff, i enjoy it, awsome content, god bless
I've cut frozen things like that with an ordinary bread saw. That seemed a little faster and more effective. It also probably wouldn't break the bottom crust of frozen bread, which I cut more often than frozen meat or frozen veg, because it clears chips like a wood saw, and isn't wedge shaped like my bread saw. It'd make even more crumbs though. Would use, but maybe once or twice a month, if that.
I am a child of the 70's, and we had the hand powered whisk and the Multi Mouligrater. I remember using the Multi Mouligrater (or something very similar) with ice cubes to make snow cones.
Grew up with that lemon lime juicer as well as the hand mixer. They were used up until my mom was put into a nursing home about 5 years ago. We had a metal version of the grater-slicer. The exact grater-slicer is still on sale today, It is really handy for small chunks of cocoa butter, a d even grating ice cubes.
The hand whisk and the Kitchen-Robot are my favs. The little grinder doesn't look sturdy enough to last long. That saw is a no go. I'd rather cut the meat up before freezing.
When I was a kid in France in the 80s/90s that last grater you tested was more or less the "default" cheese grater you'd found in every house (yes, cheese grating is important here...), and I didn't even know it was a patented design! Though it was a bit different model as the handle was directly fixated on each grater wheels so changing them would be even faster (not that we ever used the ones beside the grater, but eh)
That mouley (sp?) grater looks like the kind they use in restaurants to grate fresh Parmesan cheese over your pasta. I used to have one like that and loved it.
Thanks so much to everyone who has recently subscribed to my channel. It really does help and I really appreciate it

You may not believe this BUT... at one time or another in my 60 years of life I had each one of those gadgets in my kitchen. Liked them well.
The last gadget is exactly what the Olive Garden uses to grate cheese, but only used the last blade. They sell them at their restaurants also.
You can also get them pretty much anywhere kitchen supplies are sold, I got one for my dad as a father's day gift like 15 years ago from a Walmart
I tried getting one at Olive Garden and they said they couldn’t because they didn’t have enough graters

We had a plastic one, Mouli branded. It was just so easy to use.
Buying old fashioned kitchen gadgets because their boxes look like comic books? Absolutely VICIOUS!! 😆

It'd make even more crumbs though. Would use, but maybe once or twice a month, if that.
I am a child of the 70's, and we had the hand powered whisk and the Multi Mouligrater. I remember using the Multi Mouligrater (or something very similar) with ice cubes to make snow cones.
Took me back to my childhood, thank you ❤
Grew up with that lemon lime juicer as well as the hand mixer. They were used up until my mom was put into a nursing home about 5 years ago.
We had a metal version of the grater-slicer.
The exact grater-slicer is still on sale today, It is really handy for small chunks of cocoa butter, a d even grating ice cubes.
Cooool. I like the subject of your kitchen gadget videos
I mean who does that anymore??
Keep on rockin!!
The hand whisk and the Kitchen-Robot are my favs. The little grinder doesn't look sturdy enough to last long. That saw is a no go. I'd rather cut the meat up before freezing.
Dave always knows how to make a good video
The Mouli grater was very popular in the 1970s. I must check out if they're still available because, as you said, they work really well.
I still use my grandmother's hand crank whisk. its so versatile and easy to use
1:12 Now *THAT'S* businessing 101! 😂
I Love DaveHax Videos 💛🐍🌧️
That mouley (sp?) grater looks like the kind they use in restaurants to grate fresh Parmesan cheese over your pasta. I used to have one like that and loved it.
