It's awesome to know that it's possible to get things done outside of LA. Thank you Jason for telling us about other options that exist to get things done
He is absolutely correct when he was talking about making independent films. I have seen many bonus features and listen to many audio commentaries for both mainstream Hollywood movies and independent movies. They are many times completely different in so many key ways. First when it comes to mainstream Hollywood movies. There tends to be more drama because of movie studios interfering with the movies. Then some of the actors an actress are only do what's in the script an only X number of times. They often use standin doubles for things they don't want to do or they are only interested in there parts. Basically there is more tension an drama an everyone treats it like a job most of the time. Not every one but most . Now on independent movies there's no movie studios to interfere. Then every single person there wants to be there because they. Love making movies they stick around to watch it being filmed even if they don't. Need to be there that day they still show up just to watch it being filmed. Then they will do take after take no matter how many times it's necessary to get it right without complaining. It's all basically one big happy family coming together to make a movie that they want to make. It's not about the money to them its about making a movie. That they believe in an they want others to enjoy watching those actors an actress will go through. Hoops for those writers are directors believe me. Because how many well known actors and actress would lay on the nasty ground with who knows what. On it on top of nasty bugs an I mean nasty an other things. To the point that they are showering with top ter antibacterial soaps an things. For hours without complaining probly hardly any. But the ones that make independent movies do it with no problem or complaints.
The expense of LA and Hollywood alone is a turn off. My professor told us you must go to LA to put your face out there. I’d rather live and get my scripts solid here in Florida, rather than starve and struggle in a town that has thousands of writers.
California is just too expensive nowadays, Not every Show or Movie has to be made in Hollywood. Examples: Japanese Films, Bollywood Cinema, Irish Cinema, K-Dramas, German Cinema Etc. There's plenty of locations to choose from.
I love this guy. I’ve just been test shooting with some non actors this weekend for my Indy movie debut. They were a bit nervous but we got what we needed from them and they all loved the experience. It’s true that you are giving people opportunities and it’s very fulfilling. I’m going to try and find more interviews with him. We’ll done for yet another fantastic video, you are the best!
I believe in thinking globally acting locally. Hollywood has a great sustainable financing model, but it's not the only one. There are more options globally, we just need to be open to it. The point he makes about a cohesive team is so important. I've desperately tried to make positive space films with the local groups in Canberra, but they are just not interested in that type of genre. Not all of them but I am making contact with a few who I jell well and they also love this genre. Hoping to make projects with these wonderful people more, as I make contact with more fellow space enthusiasts.
How does a screenwriter sell, promote their TV script, or communicate with the necessary people? It would be so helpful if you could make a video about it.
I found this video to be helpful. The host is a documentary cinematographer, but he's talking about networking, and states some things that were specific and actionable enough for me to apply to my directing career, and I was able to get started in networking with the right people. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/Fdd28rp_lJ0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-dCSLpWqfhWwajq4
The cost of living in LA is insane. On the other hand many are desperate to for any chance to prove themselves in the studio system and "scale up" their productions...
It’s interesting that locations like Australia (where I live) are attracting many big budget movies, largely due to the cost of production, COVID lockdowns and the exchange rate. Unfortunately, the stories produced are usually US stories that neglect and ignore the many talented writers we have locally and their unique and entertaining stories 😱
He said that (family like) energy is important and energy is better than best director, best actor or dp. And my most beloved films like Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now, Back to the Future were extremely toxic on the set. And one big name said that easy shooting ends up with a weak film.
They can use non-union talent as extras at $80 for 8 hours and feed them a ham sandwich and bag of chips in a brown paper bag like an elementary student while they eat a nice hot meal. Taking advantage of smaller markets is a great way to save money.
This guy speaks so many truths, except for the Sundays filming! Sunday is my day for the Lord. Saturday would be great though! Filmmaking is definitely a drug, and a very positive one at that (for the most part haha)
any interviews on the effects of the strike on individuals? i see people are still filming out here (LA) with the set wagons in tow. I wonder if they are indies or got permission. Some actors, producers and directors I know are working in other states and countries either for free or low wages just to get it out of their system. Some dont support this strike or the WGA and AMPTP. Now that I think about it, I'm sure some wouldnt come on here and share that part of it for fear of being black listed.
I have been told that I have to spend at least a decade here to even get close to making anything of myself. The people here are brainwashed with the mindset that this is the best place on Earth for the industry and you have to be here. Meanwhile people are thriving elsewhere and not having to struggle to survive. I'd rather have a higher quality of life than to struggle/be miserable just to be on Hollywood.
It’s so strange that in fulfilling my dream I’d have to move back to one of the most overpriced, dangerous, and disgusting cities in America. Some dream…please get it fixed.
Hollywood is just not affordable or necessary for indie anymore. You get there and everyone is just trying to survive.

Nice reinforcement of having the Courage to start Filming where you are!

He is very wise about that positive energy and how important it is to nurture it. It is key in any work place but I would say more so in films.
The audition is definitely the job! Cheers Film Courage!!

What thoughts do you have about making movies in Los Angeles and outside of Los Angeles?

That's funny because being from South Jersey (AC) I found Hollywood to be a slower pace. Chill and people not in a rush. In Jersey we rush all day.
Come over to Korea bro, and we'll do a movie there.
Wow... Amazing information 👌👌👌very helpful
California just seems soooo expensive. Movies and startups can be done anywhere, albeit with more effort in the get go

I moved to L.A. to escape the South. I'm not going back. I'll struggle creatively here rather than go back to the personal hell I grew up in.
