The head is the same as Muhle R89, and personally don't like the handle, too large and not too grippy. The handle of Heritage looks better IMO. Greetings 👋🏼

I started with a van de hagen kit that I bought at Walmart about 8 years ago that came with the razor, blades, mug, soap and boar brush for $29. Still have them. They all still work great. After couple years I upgraded to something better quality. This the best way to learn starting out without spending alot of money. I do still use the razor and brush when I go on vacation.

Those back-in-time shaves are fun. They remind us that while our expensive safety razors give us a closer shave, those "cheap" DEs give a decent result too. Unfortunately, once we start enjoying the wet shaving journey and after we start watching shaving videos, that rabbit hole gets bigger and bigger.

Personally, after each shave, I will clean and dry my razors & blades, once that is done the shave is over. No matter if it's cheap or expensive. It's that classic saying, look after your tools, then, the tools will look after you.

I traded my wife’s dad my first DE razor (Vanderhagen) for his Murkur back in 2017. He likes the butterfly opening instead of the 3 piece design and still uses it to this day. Those VDH razors hold up. Viking razor is also another great starter razor.

@KenSurfs as usual a masterclass in wet shaving 101. My e try into the rabbit hole started out with a butterfly razor and then 3pc razor from The Dollar Tree Store. I then started to buy Wilkinson Sword Sallon blades. Now I'm using Rockwell 6S razor, Supply SE, PAA Ascension 2X Open Comb Twist-Adjustable, and a few other types of razors. Watching TH-camrs like you in wet shaving has really improved my shaving and lathering technique. The whole wet shaving community is so caring and nurturing. I'm always grateful to you and other wet shavers, GBY.

The Van der Hagen twist-to-open safeties are re-branded Weishi 9306, both the short and long handle variants. They're efficient daily shavers, but I wouldn't recommend using them after a few days' beard growth.

Porsche and VW that's it. You can have a great shave with a basic cream, a basic razor and a basic brush just learn to use the tools. If you enjoy it and you would like to try something more... Do it!!!!! But if you just need to shave... Go on easy mode it works perfectly!

In Europe we have more options in supermarkets
from old spice to brut and from mennen to gilette asl and denim (as for the classics)
sometimes you can find even shaving soaps and different creams
i've seen prosar, proraso, nivea, kolynos, noxzema, top ten and palmolive was almost everywhere like nivea
as for blades gillette, wilkinson, bic de blades are almost everywhere sometimes you can find derby and maybe supermax too or rarely astra and feather
as for brushes omega boar are everywhere or unbranded chinese boar or cheap synthetics can be found too. Rarely you can find zenith or wilkinson sword brushes too.
We also tend to use eau de cologne as asl and talcum sometimes. Borotalco and others can be found these days.

Hi Ken, I agree early 80’s we didn’t have much choice so most of us moved to the cartridges. My dad always used a British Gillette Rocket FlareTip. I never found anything of similar quality while growing up. Now I’m 57, I have a couple of Vintage Gillettes, really great shaves and very affordable. Wet shaving can be very affordable and really enjoyable.

I started out with the van der haagen blade as well. Got it from Walmart a couple of years ago. I still use it but I switched blades. The VDH razor is still my daily and it looks as shiny as when it was new. My set up was Nivea sensitive post Nivea post shaving cream, Nivea sensitive shaving cream, a generic brush and for a cup I used a candle that had ran out. After that I added a nip stick, some pre shave face cleanser, razor blade sampler and cremo the blue one it’s mint I believe.

Beginner wet shaver setup: king c Gillette safety razor and they also have a tick of blades that come with it, go to kohl’s and get a Proraso kit with the pre shave, shave cream, and aftershave location, and the van Der hacen starter kit for the shave bowl, shave brush, and a puck of soap. Hope this helps

KenSurfs, my journey into wet shaving started in my thirty's.
I found cartridges too expensive. I inherited Gillette D.E. razors from my Father in law and my wife's Grandfather.
So, I purchased a sleeve of Astra D.E. blades online from ebay. I believe I spent $10.00 for the Astra blades. The Astra blades lasted over ten years and the shave was very good.
Fortunately I discovered your channel and other Wet Shaver
    s.
The Wet shaving community shares information and you can find supplies that fit your budget and splurge once in awhile.
    Tip for sensitive skin shavers.
If you suffer from razor bumps from time to time. Bentonite can reduce the bumps. Make a paste with the Bentonite, apply it to your skin. Allow to dry, rinse.

  • @tonebone1
    @tonebone1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Just a heads up. That Cremo isn't meant to be lathered. Rub it in by hand and keep it wet. It's super slick. Good stuff.

That Van der Hagen was my first DE razor when I started back in 2016. It seems fairly durable to me. I was driving OTR at the time, and I didn't have a travel case for it. It just sort of rattled around in my dopp kit as I bounced and lurched down the road, and never seemed any the worse for wear because of it. I haven't tried those blades that came with it in years, but I remember them being rough and harsh and unpleasant as hell. Might have to dig one out and revisit them at some point.

  • @sergeylazarev4569

Hey Ken, my first setup was a plastic Dorco, Wilkinson sword boar brush, some ok cream. The first shaves were terrible, nicks and cuts and irritatation. Then my skin got used to the torture, I guess. Been properly shaving for nine years now.

I started with the Microtouch razor in the infomercials from like 10 years ago lol. It was just a why-not type of purchase. They gave me one for free and gave me a free stand too because I called in about something, I don't remember now. That was my go-to razor with barbasol shaving foam since then. Occasionally would use a cartridge razor or buzzer, but mainly the safety razor. Then recently the bottom twist mechanism started to feel stiff, and I went on a splurge and bought a Rockwell and a Parker. Definitely a better experience (along with actual shaving cream), but I can't knock on that cheap Microtouch razor which I think someone said was a rebranded Weishi razor.

Great shave. I started out with a plastic Dorco DE razor, and then I got a King C Gillette razor just weeks after starting wet shaving. 3 years on, I have upgraded to the Rockwell 6C, and I have other razors in the den that I use sparingly but still work for me. The Dorco DE razor has been stored away and is kept as a memento of my humble beginnings in wet shaving. Other than a small collection of razors, I got lots of soaps, splashes, and blades. I would love to expand my brush arsenal by getting more brushes in the future. All of that is what happens when you fall into the rabbit hole like me. Have a good one!

  • @patriklanzen
    @patriklanzen ปีที่แล้ว +2

I still got my first DE-razor in my den. I do not use it so often, but still..based on the cheap razor and cheap blades, it will be better for beginner to go to DE-razor for the wallet.
But they may get into the rabbit-hole. 👍

Regarding the cream + aftershave... if you're in Europe... go with Nivea....bang for the buck.

If you want to, it's ok of course, but my advice to new wetshavers is that you don't really need to go spending hundreds of dollars if you want to step up...get a Merkur 34c or a Muhle R89, they are in the 40-50 dollar range, they are very well manufactured, perform flawlessly and will last a lot.
In fact, they were my first razors and, after 12 years of wetshaving, and after having tried a lot of razors, from cheap to expensive, I always come back to them.

And more chance of something like it happening with the tto Assured Razor from Dollar Tree. Beginners: The cheap razors from "dollar" stores should not be your first double edge razor to begin wet-shaving with double edge razors. But main reason why is, the shave might not be so good; different for each person.
