New traditional wet shavers are sometimes frustrated with the time it can take to shave. With some practice and shortcuts it can be done in 10 minutes. Van Der Hagen shave soap, Emsplace pure badget brush, Weishi razor, Derby blade. Distributed by Tubemogul.

With the re-birth and explosive growth in the popularity of traditional wet shaving in the last few years, this is probably the video that started it all. Watching it 10 years after it was made and at a time when wet shaving is a revolution taking the world by storm (I'm talking about now), this feels like a total classic and the information and tips in this video are spot on and still one of the best reference videos for wet shaving techniques. I can attest because I have tried a lot of things and finally come to exactly the same conclusions about technique, tools (ex. the aftershave used in this video) etc after all the years of exploring - each tip in this video is the real thing

Mantic59, I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I have just completed my second shave with a Parker 96R double edge razor following your instructions. All I can say is that the shave was absolutely GLORIOUS. Very very few nicks, no pain, and no razor burn. It only took about 30 minutes, and that's saying something, considering my beard is insanely thick due to my East Indian heritage. Thank you again!

    1. Straight Razors - Closest shave known to man. Very risky. Not for the faint of face.
    2. Safety Razors - The original and still the best closest shave behind Straight Razors.
    3. Multi-Blade Razors - Modern and easier to use. Closeness depends on the brand and type of razor.
    4. Electric Shavers - For quick, in a hurry shaves. May cause irritation and razor bumps at the cost of speed.
    5. Shave Powders (Depilatories) - Facial Cement with a rotten egg smell. Will leave stubble behind.

      @TheWoWBane 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Jesse Lockhart Not sure on the first one, a lot of people claim that straight razors are more forgiving than safety razors, but yeah, I know what you mean, they need more practice for it obviously

I may have commented here before, but this video got me started. Over the last 3 years I've spent somewhat less than $30 on blades, perhaps as much as $12 on shaving soap, and I'm still getting good use from a cheap pure badger brush. I use a Merkur 1904, Van Der Hagen Deluxe, and a Tweezerman brush to great effect! Thanks for these vids!

Your video is well done. Note to those watching. You can generally get a good shave in two passes. One pass daily you can get by with if you're just going into the office or what not. Have a special event, you may wish for multiple passes. Shave soap does produce a closer shave. However, if in a hurry you can use your fav gel. Again, nice video and commentary.

I just finished my second day of wetshaving. The only shaver I have used was an electric shaver, and it has just gotten to be a chore. I'm enjoying wet shaving and it now seems more like a hobby than a chore. These first two days have been very mild shaving since my face has never really seen a direct blade before, but going over my face twice in just the down direction has provided very good results. Thanks for all the help, I couldn't have done it without all your videos.

Got my razor, brush, cream, etc in the mail today and just did my first shave with a DE. went pretty well and its the closest shave Ive had in a while. a little razor burn, but not much. I know after a couple weeks I can do it in my sleep. Its hard getting the hair that grows at an angle. Anyways, kudos and thanks for the great video.

Awesome videos. All your videos have successfully converted me from shave gel/ gillette fusion to a nice shave soap, brush and safety razor. @JackBad69 No lather and both with and against the grain depending on the area. The warm water gets the face good for the shave and it also acts as a lubricant. I don't use anything at all except water and a razor. The water keeps the hair debris off of your razor as well as your face. You still have to go over some areas a couple of time but for whatever reason, it doesn't burn or rash like a traditional shave would.

You're starting a DE shaving revolution! I have a Parker 22r w/ 7a.m platinum blades, and sure enough watching this week's episode of 'Heroes' the opening scene was a actor using the same razor and blade setup. I have had a great experience wetshaving with SB safety razor for a few weeks now. I still have a bit of trouble with my cleft chin, getting really close around it, but overall, no burn, much closer, and I haven't cut myself in days, which is unheard of for me. The Israeli blades don't seem as close, but they cut me less.

    1. I'm not quite sure what you mean. If you're talking about eveness I use my ears as a marker.
    2. If you swish the blade around in the water it won't stick. I've found that the swirling motion moves the hair and lather to the sides of my sink. Also you should be rinsing your face with fresh, cold water from the tap when you're done. That will remove any debris

It's not a problem. You're a man and most men have beards and mustaches. If the hairs are cut down to skin level you are totally clean shaven. When you get older and greyer that shadow will become less pronounced.Even a drill Sargent knows better and will pass any man with a baby's butt shave regardless of that "shadow". Anyone who tells you otherwise is speaking out of ignorance. So carry your head up high young man and above all ;enjoy your shave!

I noticed around 2:30, you do a few strokes with one side of the razor, turn it around, and do a few strokes on the other side before rinsing and repeating. Is it preferable to do it that way (turning the razor around) or to just always use the same side for a full shave, and then using the other side for next shave? None of the videos I saw (or shaving tips I read) mention this.. (I hadn't considered using both sides until I saw you doing it, I had planned on alternating sides between shaves)

I shave with a straight razor. Its risky but it gives you the best clean shave.

    Hey Mantic,
You inspired me to buy a DE razor! I've been wet shaving for years with a brush and shaving cream, but I was still getting irritation from my schick quattro. I was unaware that there was an alternative between catrtidge and straight edge I guess.
I have had about three shaves with my Merkur 33C and I've got Proraso Pre-post shave cream and shaving soap and I love it. The shave gets better every time.
Question though: where should i purchase blades at the cheapest price? Online?

(character limit reached on the previous one sorry) I figure it's just easier to use both sides in one shave instead of trying to keep track which side you were using, unless you open up the razor to check the number on the blade everytime? (which is what I did.. just started shaving using these razors --yay face full of cuts, i think i put pressure while shaving cause I was used to doing it that way, next time should be better-- and keeping track of what side to use seemed ridiculous)

@zakdeep He says in the very video itself that he did additional passes for a closer shave for demonstration purposes but the initial 10-minute shave would serve well enough.

I shave every 3 days because if I shave any more frequently I get serious red bumps and irritation. I use quality products, new blades, and many of the techniques you teach. What's my problem?

@pbmaster4 It's a Weishi razor, which is modeled after the old Gillette Super Speeds.

I stopped using soap some time ago. I now use Shave Secret instead. No rinsing required and only use about 8 to 10 DROPS to shave my entire head.

I think that you misunderstood my comment. Actually, I was commenting on what "Imasofat" said (about the fact that he shaves in the shower without a mirror).

@StopIllegalAliens01 Mantic is one hell of a guy to create these vids. So a BIG THANKS TO HIM!!! I too only use inexpensive(yet not cheap) products that fit into my budget. Van Der Hagen is a good brand(of course not top of the line, but it gets the job done). Local pharmacy's may carry a set which includes bowl, shaving cake, and boar brush. I bought a "shaving factory" DE razor off of Amazon just as a starter, and DE blades at a local drug store. Hoped this helped & best of luck!

I always tend to cut my mustache area when shaving with a DE razor... as soon as i put the razor through i could feel resistance, even with the slightest of pressure...
