    This Housing market collapse might end up being a part of us for a very long time. With inflation currently at about 9%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

    I grew up in Oakbrook when there was still some open land and even a farmhouse or two. I'd go to Oakbrook Shopping Center when it was more manageable......now, it's been added onto and is just crazy!! My grandfather put marble and tile in most of the mob homes.....so my sister and I would go into his tile room and do projects. Being italian, my nonna, grandfather, uncle and cousin lived on one side of the house, and my mom, dad, sister and I lived on the other. When we lived there we had 2 and a half acres, and had well water. It was a very big house, but it wasn't in a chichi subdivision (Ginger Creek) so it wasn't as elaborate as they were. We knew the Butlers (they pretty much WERE Oakbrook back then). The kids I rode the bus with were just handed money to go to the mall on saturdays....while I did yard work just to get money to go roller skating. I know what it is to work......sadly, a lot of kids now don't. I worked in Naperville and my husband was a process server doing mostly foreclosures. A subdivision near my work (medium wealthy) had one third of it's properties in foreclosure. They'd use credit cards as a source of income, and some of the houses he'd serve didn't even have furniture in them (what he could see from the door). I worked in the liquor dept. of a well known chain, and the husband's would come in around 6:30 or 7pm (after they got off the train from working in Chicago) and they'd buy booze and tums!! During the day, their wives would come in......never wearing the same outfit twice. Trust me, I'm not bitter, I've had money, and have not....but living so beyond your means is crazy. So is giving your kids everything and them not knowing the value of it......what happens when you're not around anymore, and they can't support themselves?? Lol, sorry, that was quite the rant.

      👍 💯. I went to school
      with the Butler children. I relate to all you say here. My parents were millionaires but divorced. I never knew it. 5 kids, a working mother, God, a working family and a whole lot of values took us through. I remember the "Red Devils" and went to Hinsdale Central" where the kids got porsches' for graduation...and suicides were rampant! I wonder why? RED DEVILS!! No thanks. That life is not for us. God and family through the tough times. Keep the fiat money. Most of theirs is laundered- no offense. So glad I moved away.

      @@ralphieandryan Thanks! Excellent, fun video! Grew up in Cook County loooong ago, before my family dragged me to Phoenix - but I moved back to Illinois in 2007 (to Mundelein, this time) but returned to Phoenix in 2009. Phoenix is mostly crappy lawn-less neighborhoods with cookie-cutter, cheaply built beige stucco cubes, no sidewalks, and scrawny half-dead trees. It is descript only in its non-descriptness. However, my current neighborhood has some mansions dating back to the early 1900's and tons of mid-century brick homes on sprawling green lots with HUGE trees. Still, I miss the Chicago 'burbs (and who doesn't love the Loop?). Good luck with your business!

    “Chicago 6th best city in the world for the uber rich”, and “6th state with the most billionaires” and all you hear are people talking Chicago and Illinois down. What do these uber wealthy know that others don’t? It definitely helps explain some of the animosity of downstate IL towards Chicago and it’s wealthy collar counties which dominate state politics though. This list barely scratches the surface of upscale suburbs. As others have pointed out there’s Barrington and Barrington Hills, Burr Ridge, Lake Forest, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Highland Park, to name a few. Chicagoland has a lot going for it. Great public transport by U.S. standards, Lake Michigan and its plentiful supply of fresh water, major sports teams, the city itself and all the cultural attractions, green space. 32 states have top state income tax brackets higher than ILs 4.95% but IL is a flat tax state which hits lower income people harder. IL does not tax retirement income. Property taxes are high almost by design as it is how schools are funded so wealthy people get better schools. Illinois was 37th in terms of crime rate per 100,000, and of the top 50 most violent cities in the U.S., Chicago ranked 31. Not great, and out of the 5 largest cities in the U.S. only Houston ranked higher, but perhaps not as bad as the news makes it seem. Illinois may be down, but it’s far from out.

    • @ralphieandryan
      @ralphieandryan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment and your insights! You make some great points about the many advantages of living in Chicagoland and why it's attractive to the uber-wealthy. Chicago and its surrounding suburbs have a lot going for it. It's true that the cost of living can be high, but there are also many other benefits to living in the area that make it worth considering. Thanks again for your comment!

      The wealthy suburbs not only pay for their own schools, but the schools downstate. Here is a recommendation: move.

    • @RB-yg7jw
      @RB-yg7jw ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EdwardAndersen No need to move, I’m a happy IL native. However, do you agree with the premise? Are the schools generally better in wealthy areas? Better facilities, and equipment, higher paid teachers and staff? Success has its advantages and it’s how we have decided to fund schools.

    • @ralphieandryan
      @ralphieandryan  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RB-yg7jw It's true that schools in wealthier areas tend to have more resources, better facilities, and higher paid teachers and staff. This can lead to higher quality education and better outcomes for students. However, it's important to remember that there are excellent schools in all areas, regardless of the wealth of the community.

    • @loveydovey89
      @loveydovey89 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RB-yg7jw most of the funding for school comes from local property taxes, so, yes, wealthier areas have better schools that they pay for themselves. A smaller portion of the funding does come from state taxes, in which case, the wealthier areas are actually also paying a larger portion towards education throughout the whole state as well.

    I still don't understand why rich people live in such a big mansion. Too big even for two families. Do they use all the rooms? cleaning is also difficult. My regards to Warren Buffett. He is very rich and still lives in his old house. He says that he is enough for himself and that he will complete his life there.

    • @ralphieandryan
      @ralphieandryan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! It's true that some wealthy people choose to live in large mansions, but there are many other factors that go into the decision. Some people may choose to live in a large house for the extra space for family and friends, or for the prestige and status that it may bring. Others may choose to live in a simpler home to save money or to minimize their environmental impact. Everyone's situation is different, and it's ultimately up to the individual to decide what's best for them. Thanks again for your comment!

    How can one afford to live here ?!

    • @ralphieandryan
      @ralphieandryan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Affording to live in wealthier suburbs can indeed be a concern for many individuals. The high cost of living in such areas is often associated with factors like desirable amenities, quality schools, proximity to urban centers, and overall higher income levels. However, it's important to note that affordability is relative and can vary based on individual circumstances and priorities.
      While living in the wealthiest suburbs may require a higher income or financial resources, there are several factors to consider when assessing affordability. First, it's essential to evaluate your personal budget, financial goals, and lifestyle preferences. You may find that certain compromises or adjustments can make living in these suburbs more feasible, such as exploring different housing options, considering commuting distances, or researching nearby areas that offer a similar quality of life at a more affordable cost.
      Additionally, it's worth noting that not everyone's goal is to live in the wealthiest suburbs. There are plenty of other neighborhoods and suburbs in the Chicago area that offer good amenities, quality of life, and a more affordable living experience.
      Ultimately, the key is to find a balance between your financial capabilities, lifestyle preferences, and long-term goals. If you have specific questions about the affordability of particular suburbs or need guidance on exploring alternative options, feel free to ask, and I'll be happy to provide you with more information.
