  • Today we’re talking about how to teach the first movement of the Sonata in G Major Op.49, No.2 by Ludwig van Beethoven. In my opinion, this is the easiest Beethoven sonata movement. Editions that I mentioned: Henle urtext: amzn.to/3FZcsLO and Masterwork Classics book 8 amzn.to/3V6bJN9

Do you have other pieces in the intermediate repertoire that you'd like me to cover in a future video? Or do you have another favorite sonata movement that you'd like help teaching? Leave a comment here!

Love your helpful videos and will share with a local teacher's group that will so appreciate this too! I loved playing this one too though was chuckling as it didn't sparkle like your demonstration, but was a great challenge piece when I took it on long ago.

Thank you for watching and sharing! And I’m sure my current demonstration is more “sparkly” than my earlier self’s performance. 😂

Excellent reminders. Just a tiny note that the recap starts on measure 71, not 61, which probably will be obvious any teachers
viewing this. (I also have the Henley edition.) Thank you for your excellent recommendations.

Hmm, yes I did say the wrong number, but the correct start for the recap is 67. (My measure numbers are individually numbered in pencil and I must have read it wrong in the moment!)

Very informative and helpful, thank you! If you haven’t already, can you cover Chopin Nocturne Op. 55 No. 1?

    Great work, very well explained.
even though I am not playing this sonata I will be able to apply your instructions to the piece I have just started now which is Beethoven sonata Op 79 first movement, it would be wonderful if you could cover that sonata too some day soon. 😊
I’m pretty sure your channel will become very successful.

Yes - I am teaching the first movement of Op.79 right now and will gladly cover that in an upcoming video. They are similar in many ways, although 79 has some unique technical challenges. Good luck!

I love your calm demeanour and exquisite explanation of how to teach this sonata. Do you have a tutorial on the next movement?

I do have a tutorial on that movement, but it is within the TopMusicPro membership in my Piece By Piece series there. For more information or to join, click here: members.topmusic.co/JannaWilliamson/membership
