  • Beethoven's two sonatas in Op. 49 are usually called "Leichte Sonaten" or "Easy Sonatas", and are perfect pieces for early intermediate students who want to become more familiar in the classical style. In this video we check out the music of the 1st movement in Op. 49 no. 2 in G major, with a lot of consideration of the governing Sonata form structure. With pianist Henrik Kilhamn.

Beethoven my beloved. I definitely think these "Easy Sonatas" are a bit underappreciated amongst the Beethoven sonatas. Nice to hear your analysis.

It appears to be a standing discussion - should these be included as equals to the other sonatas or not. There are arguments for both sides, but I don't think it hurts them to say that there is some distance up to the greater Beethoven. There's a nice lecture on this sonata by Andras Schiff where he says that compared to Clementi and the likes, this is "pure gold" :D

I don’t think there is any debate about Opus 49 and Beethoven himself was absolutely clear why the two ‘sonates faciles’ should *not* be included in the canon of his 30 sonatas; he told us exactly why.
(No 1 is better than No 2).
Andras Schiff is normally a brilliant presenter whom I admire very much; I cannot think what got into him with that apology for the trivia of Opus 49 No 2 which is by far the silliest talk he has ever given.
Opus 49 (like the juvenile sonatas WoO 47) should be relegated to the status of an Appendix to the sonatas.

We don't mind you covering the heavy stuff.
Those are stuff that is typically inaccessible to us so it is great that you can assist us with those.

I love your analysis style. You make the pieces come alive and you add so much meaning. I wish you would always play the complete piece at the end of the analysis.

Thank you for having a simpler repertoire next to the complex pieces ! Much appreciated by an early intermediate :)

I'm glad to find out that it was written 10 yrs earlier. I had always wondered why these simple sonatas were so late.I do find them to be more balanced and mature than the opus 2 pieces, less trying to break the mold and more going along with the tradition. Your suggestion that he wrote it for students makes a lot of sense. Mvmt 2 is especially nice in this one.

I hadn't thought too much about it before looking into it for this video, but it makes so much sense that it was written earlier, right!

It is a piece which allows to quite easily ruin the musical value. It needs more than students may think, and it is a good foundation if played well (also technically), especially in a faster tempo.

Mozart’s comparable ‘sonada facile’ (ugh!) has an Italian title ‘sonata facile’ with the latter word pronounced correctly *’fah*-chee-leh’, and ‘sonata’ pronounced with a ‘t’ not a ‘d’.
Beethoven’s Opus 49 was originally published with a French title - ‘Sonates faciles’.
