I normally try to avoid learning from the pros because they often talk over your head and use terminology that's not noobie-friendly. But this was an excellent explanation on the basics of MvC2 by Max.
Gonna say that as a Guilty Gear player jumping into this for the first time, I cannot stress just how important assist characters are. I only began to realise it after getting my ass handed to me over and over by Captain Commando and Cyclops. It was so natural for me to want to get in close and do unga bunga combos but I couldn't figure out how. It was only when I started to use assists more and throw out big supers like Cable's HVB, or Doom's Photons that I managed to get my first wins.
I've been playing this for 20 years, but to give u some advice on Cable, you should go into training mode and set it to infinite meter. So what you'll practice is tiger knee-ing the HVB. I can loop it like 3-4 times. Just know, you'll need to do it quicker each rep due to hit stun deterioration (too many hits).

Just noticed that Cables cyber arm is always facing away from the audience. If he’s on the left side of the screen, his cyber arm is on the left side but if he’s on the right side then he has a right cyber arm…..it seems the devs just simply flipped/mirrored this model
Yeah, that's literally how almost every single sprite-based 2D fighter has ever worked, simply due to memory limitations. The only 2D fighter to really give any character proper sprite work for each side of the screen was Street Fighter III with Gill, which was precisely done to showcase how the CPS-III could do that, but even for him it was literally just swapping the two colors his body was made up of & giving him accompanying elemental effects (fire or ice) to match.
Is this your first time seeing sprite based graphics? It’s not a model it’s a hand drawn sprite. They weren’t going to draw every frame of animation facing left and right.
Thanks Max! As someone who played in my late childhood/early teen years, I totally forgot how to play this damn game. I'll take your tips in my gameplay going forward
I hear what Max is saying for MvC1 with synergy, but that's not entirely true. It's there, but it's that one mechanic where both of your characters are on the screen, and it's kind of the reason I want to play that game so much. As great as MvC2 is, because of that mechanic in MvC1 I want to play it over MvC2 at the moment. As a training mode monster I feel like there is so much unexplored. Justin played against some top Ryu/Morrigan player a while back, and that guy was the reason I want to get my hands on MvC1 so much. Great video though. Pushing assist and another button together took a long time for me to wrap my head around back in MvC3. I wish someone back then would've like, "dawg, just do ex's like you're playing street fighter" 😅😂
Honestly when I play I play it like if they made MvC Infinite have 3 man teams instead of 2 they have similar enough controls schemes and MvC2 is a bit faster
Iceman's ice beam is a really good lockdown assist that does decent block damage. His combos into supers are easy for new players. If you like spamming keep away attacks with Blackheart or like to use teleporting characters like Strider or Dhalsim the ice beam is a hard and multi hitting ground move that sweeps the floor space innocuously after a super jump. Also, he's one of the OG characters.
I went into this game with a DBFZ mind set and thought i had to be missing something when it seemed like i could only get like 4-hit combos and my assists weren't comboing at all lol. This video made me understand why i was so trash
I don't play fighting games because I don't know what the heck I'm doing (I know... all beginners don't know what they're doing at first) and I usually just end up button-mashing. I also don't watch fighting game videos because I don't understand what is happening, but this "gateway" tutorial definitely has raised my interest in watching/trying MvC2 a little.
The first thing I'm going to do when I get my hands on this collection in November is go into Training Mode for MVC2 and attempt to do _that_ infinite combo. You know the one.
"its not about combos" and here I JUST got the hang of this games combos (very simple baby's first stuff like lp, lk launch, lp,lk,lk super/hyper for example) fr that takes a load off my mind to not worry about. it is more work as i've seen but flash and entertaining.

This explanation perfectly explained why I like MVC3 and couldn't really understand MVC2
Max out here doing the Lord's work
Thank you for enplaning this, I had no idea how important assist is in this game.
Honestly when I play I play it like if they made MvC Infinite have 3 man teams instead of 2 they have similar enough controls schemes and MvC2 is a bit faster
Max making marvel vs Capcom tutorials again was not in my 2024 bingo card, but here we are
Just started MvC2 today. I'm looking forward to learning it
Good luck and remember to have fun a lot of vets in this game that’s wiling to help people learn
Dumb team synergies is the way to go when having fun in Mvc2
Iceman's ice beam is a really good lockdown assist that does decent block damage. His combos into supers are easy for new players. If you like spamming keep away attacks with Blackheart or like to use teleporting characters like Strider or Dhalsim the ice beam is a hard and multi hitting ground move that sweeps the floor space innocuously after a super jump. Also, he's one of the OG characters.
Sakura’s anti-air is addictive to me
If this becomes a series of just a brief crash course tutorials, that would be an EASY million views
I went into this game with a DBFZ mind set and thought i had to be missing something when it seemed like i could only get like 4-hit combos and my assists weren't comboing at all lol. This video made me understand why i was so trash
Deeply appreciated.
Played some casual matches and had a great time. As soon as I hit ranked things got a little insane 😅
they fight like psycho maniacs i watched some rank on you tube good lord they beast you
The first thing I'm going to do when I get my hands on this collection in November is go into Training Mode for MVC2 and attempt to do _that_ infinite combo.
You know the one.
So discouraging to tune into a MvC2 tournament and it's the same 4-5 characters and 2-3 assists.
so much fun /s
tl;dr
Pick good assists
Hold down back
Break your assist buttons
This was really helpful, thanks dood
"its not about combos"
and here I JUST got the hang of this games combos (very simple baby's first stuff like lp, lk launch, lp,lk,lk super/hyper for example) fr that takes a load off my mind to not worry about. it is more work as i've seen but flash and entertaining.
This changed me a lot bc I kept trying to play mvc2 like Umvc3 after going back on fightcade lol. I’ve played mvc2 for a long time and never knew this stuff or never got taught at local arcades
Max: "ok, this is how you can get good at the game"
Justin: "nice, fresh meat"
What a time to be alive. Feel like a kid again with the MVC2 revival
I was just wondering how the hell to play this game now that I bought it lol. Thanks Max.
"MMMMMMMM IMMA GET EM"
Max, 2024
MVC2 has an AMAZING soundtrack. Don't change my mind.
Thank you max, I needed this
I played this and was in 1st grade on the ps2. I am now playing this hoping to actually learn the mechanics. This will take a lot of time but I’m excited to learn
