I love Max's dedication to getting new people into this classic game. While I am not an OG at this game, my first introduction to it was on the ps3 and I have always been nostalgic for it, even when I wasn't good at fighting games.
Gonna say that as a Guilty Gear player jumping into this for the first time, I cannot stress just how important assist characters are. I only began to realise it after getting my ass handed to me over and over by Captain Commando and Cyclops. It was so natural for me to want to get in close and do unga bunga combos but I couldn't figure out how. It was only when I started to use assists more and throw out big supers like Cable's HVB, or Doom's Photons that I managed to get my first wins.
I've been playing this for 20 years, but to give u some advice on Cable, you should go into training mode and set it to infinite meter. So what you'll practice is tiger knee-ing the HVB. I can loop it like 3-4 times. Just know, you'll need to do it quicker each rep due to hit stun deterioration (too many hits).

Yeah, that's literally how almost every single sprite-based 2D fighter has ever worked, simply due to memory limitations. The only 2D fighter to really give any character proper sprite work for each side of the screen was Street Fighter III with Gill, which was precisely done to showcase how the CPS-III could do that, but even for him it was literally just swapping the two colors his body was made up of & giving him accompanying elemental effects (fire or ice) to match.
Is this your first time seeing sprite based graphics? It’s not a model it’s a hand drawn sprite. They weren’t going to draw every frame of animation facing left and right.

This game needs a dedicated casuals/bootcamp mode. Online completely dominated by pros. I want to learn but Training Mode is just doing shit in a vacuum. Idgaf how whiny this comes across fighting games need a more welcoming entry point for newbies
Naw fair enough. What I'd recommend though is lurking around on Twitch and look out for streamers who are also newer. I do this for any competitive game so I don't compare myself to people who have a doctorate in MvC combos.
Thanks Max! As someone who played in my late childhood/early teen years, I totally forgot how to play this damn game. I'll take your tips in my gameplay going forward
I hear what Max is saying for MvC1 with synergy, but that's not entirely true. It's there, but it's that one mechanic where both of your characters are on the screen, and it's kind of the reason I want to play that game so much. As great as MvC2 is, because of that mechanic in MvC1 I want to play it over MvC2 at the moment. As a training mode monster I feel like there is so much unexplored. Justin played against some top Ryu/Morrigan player a while back, and that guy was the reason I want to get my hands on MvC1 so much. Great video though. Pushing assist and another button together took a long time for me to wrap my head around back in MvC3. I wish someone back then would've like, "dawg, just do ex's like you're playing street fighter" 😅😂
Ive never played this game until now. I’ve just been beefing it out in Arcade, I don’t have a desire to play online except against my friends. So far Thanos is my guy. Ken is my dedicated assist because I saw he was used in low tier tourneys for that reason. 2nd slot is just someone I wanna try.
The first thing I'm going to do when I get my hands on this collection in November is go into Training Mode for MVC2 and attempt to do _that_ infinite combo. You know the one.
Iceman's ice beam is a really good lockdown assist that does decent block damage. His combos into supers are easy for new players. If you like spamming keep away attacks with Blackheart or like to use teleporting characters like Strider or Dhalsim the ice beam is a hard and multi hitting ground move that sweeps the floor space innocuously after a super jump. Also, he's one of the OG characters.
This changed me a lot bc I kept trying to play mvc2 like Umvc3 after going back on fightcade lol. I’ve played mvc2 for a long time and never knew this stuff or never got taught at local arcades
Honestly when I play I play it like if they made MvC Infinite have 3 man teams instead of 2 they have similar enough controls schemes and MvC2 is a bit faster

Old heads eating with all these fighting games. We’re boutta look back at this time and be amazed by how good of a year it was for fighters. With that said,I’m loving putting all these new players in the blender. NEVER STOPPED PLAYING
This was really helpful, thanks dood
This game needs a dedicated casuals/bootcamp mode. Online completely dominated by pros. I want to learn but Training Mode is just doing shit in a vacuum. Idgaf how whiny this comes across fighting games need a more welcoming entry point for newbies
Naw fair enough. What I'd recommend though is lurking around on Twitch and look out for streamers who are also newer. I do this for any competitive game so I don't compare myself to people who have a doctorate in MvC combos.
No it doesn't. I just needs to give people onine the ability to ban certain characters from the lobby.
Sakura’s anti-air is addictive to me
What a time to be alive. Feel like a kid again with the MVC2 revival
Thank you for enplaning this, I had no idea how important assist is in this game.
Thanks Max! As someone who played in my late childhood/early teen years, I totally forgot how to play this damn game. I'll take your tips in my gameplay going forward
If this becomes a series of just a brief crash course tutorials, that would be an EASY million views
Max you rock thanks for your videos glad you're still great resource, you helped me years ago with Fighterz
Equaly balanced as all things should be
Thank you max, I needed this
Deeply appreciated.
Max making marvel vs Capcom tutorials again was not in my 2024 bingo card, but here we are
Max out here doing the Lord's work
The first thing I'm going to do when I get my hands on this collection in November is go into Training Mode for MVC2 and attempt to do _that_ infinite combo.
You know the one.
Played some casual matches and had a great time. As soon as I hit ranked things got a little insane 😅
they fight like psycho maniacs i watched some rank on you tube good lord they beast you
Iceman's ice beam is a really good lockdown assist that does decent block damage.
Just in time, I just know how to do the f*cking infinite. XD
tl;dr
Pick good assists
Hold down back
Break your assist buttons
This changed me a lot bc I kept trying to play mvc2 like Umvc3 after going back on fightcade lol. I’ve played mvc2 for a long time and never knew this stuff or never got taught at local arcades
Honestly when I play I play it like if they made MvC Infinite have 3 man teams instead of 2 they have similar enough controls schemes and MvC2 is a bit faster
I went into this game with a DBFZ mind set and thought i had to be missing something when it seemed like i could only get like 4-hit combos and my assists weren't comboing at all lol. This video made me understand why i was so trash
I was just wondering how the hell to play this game now that I bought it lol. Thanks Max.
Max: "ok, this is how you can get good at the game"
Justin: "nice, fresh meat"
"MMMMMMMM IMMA GET EM"

dood, I just realized this is essencially what Zenless Zone Zero ended up being. Holy crap. No wonder it got compared to fighting games a lot.
Marvel 2 rollback on Steam in 2024 still hasn’t sunk in yet for me
So freaking excited to have this game back...
