Brewing an IPA (beer) with the Bulldog Brewer

  • On one of my previous videos people commented that they wanted to see the beer brewing in action. In this video I will be doing exactly that with my Bulldog Brewer. I'm not going to crack open the brewer and not going to take a look inside. I'm just going to use it. :) (for now)
    This video is a step-by-step video of the entire beer brewing process.
    For this IPA I used 7 kilograms of pale ale malt and Saaz, Citra, Cascade and Amarillo hops. The fermenting is done by Safale S-04 yeast.
    And for everyone disappointed that this is not an electronics related video: in the end I will take a look at my fermenting box, which takes care of a temperature controlled fermenting with a Raspberry Pi and 7 DS18B20 sensors (3 outside of the box and 4 inside). The software which controls the sensors and relays is written by me and written mainly in PHP with some python to control the relay's. In the future I will be adding it to my Github.
    You can find my "brewery" on Untappd of course: untappd.com/Go...
    If you like this video and would like to see more electronics related videos, consider subscribing to my channel; that would be awesome.

    Why did you remove the screen plate before sparging? Isn´t that supposed to be there when you sparge+

    Tape an electric toothbrush to the side of the thermometer and let the vibration shake the liquid down. I brought a mercury BP gauge and the mercury column was in about 30 sections. Mild shaking caused it all to drop though mercury being heavier that was less of a challenge to fix.

    I saw that you put your 2 litte plates in the Mill the opposite way. Change that and your grain should be even better. Nice video 😁 i have the same bulldog and so happy with that one.

      At first I didn't understand what you meant, but I've looked up some images of the mill and now I see. Thank you for helping me out. I will definitely try to swap the plates.

    Hi! Have you experienced drop in your efficiency when you switched to this equipment?

    • @basvandersluis5662
      @basvandersluis5662  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the contrary. The efficiency is always around 75%.

      @@basvandersluis5662 thanks for the reply! You let the pump flow on maximum during all the 60 minutes of the mash? Do you crush the malt same as for other equipment? You used 24+7liters for the 7 kg of malt, correct? (I recently switched to Easybrew and my efficiency went from high 70's to around 50 and don't know why...

      The pump has only one setting: on or off. So yes, it was on for the entire mashing time. I do have to say that I get other efficiencies when I adjust my malt mill. The malts need to be cracked, not milled into dust. It took some time to adjust it, but I found the setting I have now very good for the Pale Ale and Pilsen malts. When I start using other malts, I actually need to adjust the malt mill, but most of the time I am too lazy for that, since I use only a couple of hundred grams of those malts for a brew. I think you can get a better efficiency by milling the malts just a little bit different. If that does not work, try mashing a little bit longer.

    great video, thank you. the best way to bring back thermometer to normal stage, in you rcase, just heat it a bit over then maximum readings on it. if it is 100 degr then just place it to the boiling beerwash. all parts will be combined. veel succes.

    Hi there. Always thought you lift the basket up and then install the sparge plate. That way you dont break the malt bed

    • @basvandersluis5662
      @basvandersluis5662  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is possible of course. What is the advantage of not breaking the malt bed?

    • @geoffreydowning6843
      @geoffreydowning6843 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dissadvantage of breaking the malt bed is very cloudy beer and also the fact that the malt isnt washed properly releasing all the enzymes for fermatation which is probably why the gravity was lower. Check out bulldog brewer from grimsby homebrew on you tube which may be a different way of doing things. Enjoy your beer

    Goede video en prettige uitleg. Ik dacht echter dat je wat rustiger moest doen met het uitspoelen van je mout zodat je meer rendement hebt. Zoals ik het zag kieper je die 7 liter water er in een keer op, denk dat je daardoor ver onder je vooraf geschatte sg waarde uit bent gekomen.

    • @basvandersluis5662

      Goeie tip. Ik ga straks weer brouwen en dan zal ik eens wat rustiger aan doen. Kijken of dat helpt.
