For anyone wondering what the "other" railroad Whitepass' locomotives went to was, they ended up with US Gypsum, in Plaster City, Imperial County, CA. They still work to this day, on the last industrial narrow gauge route in the US. They still have their snowplows, despite working in the Borrego desert.
The 90 class units were rebuilt by CEECO in Tacoma in the 2010's actually and re-engined with Cummins prime movers, along with entirely new electrical equipment, dynamic brakes, radiators and ditch lights. Great to see a well produced video on this railway!
When they were rebuilt the engines became very problematic. Lots of electrical issues and the original cab controls were ripped out and traded for the cookie cutter control stands on most engines currently being built, which removed visibility for the engineer especially while switching.
Great video! I absolutely love those old locomotives and the newer locomotives also look pretty cool. I went to the White Pass and Yukon Railroad 7 years ago and I will never forget how beautiful the scenery was there and this video show’s how beautiful the views are. Awesome video and I can’t wait for the future upcoming White Pass and Yukon Railroad videos. ❤️👍😎
I remember watching an episode of Mighty Trains on this narrow gauge railroad. It was quite cool. Being a massive train and transit nerd. I watched all of the episodes of Mighty Trains on The Discovery Channel. Good to see this railroad is still going strong after all these years
Fantastic video about the White Pass and Yukon narrow gauge railroad. Interesting is the change of diesel locomotives and the sale of diesel locomotives to the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad. Very nice shots of the trains, especially the Mikado steam locomotive #73. Thanks for showing and best wishes from Germany.
My wife and I rode the White Pass and Yukon this past May. We loved it! The Canadian Border was still under several feet of snow. The views were still spectacular! We rode behind one of the new diesels, but we did see the Steam Locomotive number 73 on a test run on the mountain.
I have went to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad once, back in the summer of 2017. But I would like to come back, even to see their beautiful steam locomotive, White Pass & Yukon 73. Good video of these White Pass & Yukon Diesels.
One of the steam engines that used to run on the White Pass Railroad is No.190 nicknamed "Yukon Queen". She now runs at Tweetsie Railroad. You should go there!
Still can’t get enough of those DL535 units! I would love to learn more about WP&Y from your videos, since you do an amazing job of explaining the history.
Nice video Mike! Also fun fact at 3:45, four of these locos (which would be classed as the 1100 Class) were also originally ordered and built for QUBE Logistics, which is a freight transport company that operates freight rail services in NSW, Queensland (Only steel made by Bluescope), Victoria and recently South Australia. All of the 11 Class locos remain in service, with two being leased by Watco for use in Western Australia, alongside GML10 (which is very identical to an N Class locomotive, but with different traction and mechanical features).
The WP&Y is my personal second favorite railroad, and it'd probably be my #1 pick had they preserved and operated some of the K-28s that went up there and never returned with the addition of a K-36 or two (cause they're my favorite locomotives). With all the spectacular scenery and rich history, this railroad is and forever will be, an example of why I love narrow gauge railroading way more than standard gauge!
I'll never forget that day day. Sailing into Skagway in the fog with mountains on each side of you. And then all of the sudden Skagway was in front of us. When I was there I was only able to document the E3000CCDC's in action. 110 & 109 we're in the yard sitting. 73 was in the shops. And most of the shovel noses we're hidden away. My train was pulled by 3001. Can't recommend the train ride and railfanning the WPYR enough. It's one of my favorites
I went to skagway summer of 2024 and the new engines are enormous they definitely look twice as powerful as the older units i didn't ride the train when I went but hopefully summer 2025 i will ride it
There are several reasons why they didn't. Newfoundland Railway was 3 FT 6 IN or 42 inch, opposed to WP&YR being 3 FT like Durango and Silverton or Tweetsie. White Pass and Yukon had just reopened as a tourist railroad when the CN closed down Newfoundland railway in 1988. While the White Pass did buy several freight cars from the Newfoundland Rwy, they had to be re-trucked from 42 to 36. If the White Pass hadn't closed in 1982 they probably would have bought a few of their engines, but like the cars the units would have to be re-trucked to 36. I imagine they would have likely used the NG CN units to replace their GE 90 class units while their newer wide-cab(such as 114) and standard cab DL535E's handled regular assignments.
@@tplow95 They could've had the axles adapted to the narrower narrow gauge tracks like the mining railroad in Chile that put them on meter gauge rails. The G8s would've been perfect for the White Pass.
Those 3000 Class look virtually identical to The 1100 Class we have here in Australia except The 1100's had EMD engines and were built at La Grange Illinois.
the reason the alco's showed up was due to the railroad investing heavily in mining traffic, mostly lead and zinc ore which necessitated upgrades having to be made to the line to accommodate the new motive power and ore cars
My 😍 🚂 of the diesel fleet is the NRE 3,000 series since they’re the longest and the paint can be red and black not just yellow and green. Also can you upload a video of steam 🚂 number 73?
Qube rail services in Australia are using the NREC locos you show here. They bought them new, but they had reconditioned engines fitted. I guess they were who ordered the ones shown here. The 1100 class run on standard gauge here.
I hope those old streamlined GE's end up somewhere good, be awesome to see them on the D&S or C&T, their older style would make them fit in a bit better in those strongholds of steam
I always liked the White Pass & Yukon the the old GE's and ALco/MLW's look perfect there. I personally find the new EMD's looking out of place and just too big
Yes, 110, 109, 108, and 104 are still at the railroad. 108 is currently out of service but the other 3 still run. 110 and 109 are featured in this video.

Indeed! Might have to make a trip there this winter now...
Pretty sure they wrecked one of them, could be wrong tho
@@rickshaw6440 Yes, I think 113 hit a truck in the 1990s and was replaced with the 111.
Mighty Machines introduced me to this railroad, glad to see someone visited it!
It was neat to finally have the chance to visit! The White Pass and Yukon has been a top priority of mine for quite some time.
Mighty machines was my whole childhood. I loved this episode
Me too. Also my favorite.
I think you mean Mighty Trains
@@Elliottblancherno mighty machines, was a Canadian tv show for kids that teaches about machines and the jobs they do

What a great video!
White Pass is on the list of places to go, for sure.
How inspiring!
This series will be fantastic!
Thanks so much for sharing!
And thank you so much for watching!
I love old locomotives in this style! Because they give you memories and Tell stories to younger generations!
They're pretty interesting diesels! Very unique for North America!

I've wanted to go visit the Tweetsie for quite some time! Maybe next year!
That is some stunning scenery! Very unique locomotives! Great quality video! Thank you Mike!
That it is! Thank you for watching!
That prime mover one really caught my eyes...wish you could've also shown a cab-ride or two but amazing clicks ❤
That would've been really neat, hopefully on a future visit!

I love the color scheme on the new locomotives. It really looks sharp. Looking forward to your series. SR
Thank you, Steve! I do like the classic green and yellow, but the new black and red scheme does look nice!
Looking forward to your series in the future.
What an adventure !
Many thanks! Definitely more to come!
Great shots, Mike! I was lucky enough to ride this railroad in May! You definitely captured it much more elegantly that I did 😁👍
Excellent video as usual
Thank you thank you!

Thanks, Derrick!

Great video as always Mike!
Thank you!
It’s such a fascinating railroad.
Unique locomotives, spectacular scenery and, a very extensive history.
Fantastic video as always.
It's a crying shame this line no longer runs to Whitehorse - an AMAZING town that would be a great destination for those cruisers...
Awesome catches!
Thanks!
Wow, alright! Awesome video!❤️

Great-looking train, with those Lake cars.

Great video! Cool to see the interesting narrow gauge locomotives run in beauty and style
These scenes are incredible. Fantastic video!
The DL-535s were sold for service in Colombia in 1992 before WP&Y re-acquired them in 1999. Great video as always!
This railroad hits home because it was this railroad on a DVD that got me interested in this railroad and it still does to this day.
i would like to see all the tracks restored all the way to Whitehorse
They got some pretty cool trains!
Add to the ironies, back in WW2,the White Pass had ex-DRG&W engines,as there was a motive power shortage due to the war! Small side note! Thank you 😇 😊
Happy Friday!
Great video, really enjoyed it.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.

THE NOSTALGIA AHHHHHHH
The diesels look amazing and nice looking, and i remember wa'tchimg this in a documentary as a kid

I've always been surprised that they didn't get any of the engines from Newfoundland after CN mothballed that operation in the 80's.

And at Tweetsie

They look identical to the 1100 class. And I heard an EMD 645 on this vid, same engine as used in the Qube locos.
seeing that sharp modern looking thing pull those coaches looks a bit silly to me lol
This is a nice video and thanks for giving me all about the locomotives
The new units still have the same foreign feel that narrow gauge locomotives seem to have when compared to standard locomotives, I like them a lot
I haven’t seen these in years.

They're pretty unique locomotives!

3ft Gauge is the Standard Narrow Gauge of North America.
Couple days ago I went to the white pass railway pretty cool. I made a video about it not long after I went to the railway.
sucks they sold some of their older diesels, they had the classic charm versus the E3000CC-DC units
How come most of the trains had no passengers ? Did the ships stop coming to Skagway?
MIGHTY MACHINES GOT ME HOOKED TO THIS RAILROAD!
Those are the train from mighty machines
It would be nice if they also restored freight service on this legendary railway.
I always liked the White Pass & Yukon the the old GE's and ALco/MLW's look perfect there. I personally find the new EMD's looking out of place and just too big
Hopefully I get to go here before all the old diesels are retired or sent off
Are the Class 90s and DL535e's still in regular service? I'd love to get the chance to ride behind them on home rails.
one thing i will say is that i wish they would re-install the original horns on the engines (Nathan m5's i think)
Also do any of the old diesels still have an original Nathan M horn?
Wait, are those U-boats?
Or are they B boats ?
Are there any DL535 Locomotives Still at the White Pass And yukon railroad still
Yes, 110, 109, 108, and 104 are still at the railroad. 108 is currently out of service but the other 3 still run. 110 and 109 are featured in this video.
I've seen pictures of some Class 90s parked on a pier and being used for rip-rap. Does anyone have any further info about this?
