This is exactly what dark academia is, this is its core. Clothes, makeup, and home decor are secondary. Thank you for putting it into words. I like to listen to this every day for motivation and as a reminder as to why I study. I study not for the grades but for the knowledge. Hoping for more content like this!

And that's why its "dark" because when you really believe in just how amazing academia is. You start to gain some extremely twisted ideas about how "Knowledge is not for everyone, only those willing to sacrifice for the sake of learning."
Luckily the gatekeeping nature of this dark academia is no longer.

    (1)
this is not a guide on how to get good grades.
this is a guide on how to always attend your classes with a thrill in your heart,
on how to never lose the motivation to go back to your desk and read some more,
on how to overcome the mid-semester slump and to conquer gloomy finals days,
on how to love what you're doing for the sake of being studious, for the art of enjoying revision, for the beauty of knowledge itself.
this is a guide on how to study like an academic.
    (2)
RM. Ryan and EL Deci (1993) once said you cannot make the expectations of others your goal. if you wish to truly do something right, you must find the reasons for why youre doing it within yourself. replace external motivation with an intrinsic motivation.
and L Küster and H Decke-Cornill (2010) once said that of all intrinsic reasons you might find, the one which will motivate you the best, and make the information you absorb last the longest, better than money and glory, is the love to the thing itself.
in our case? the case of us academics? we must bring ourselves to not just care for the content of our studies but to genuinely be excited abt the act of studying itself.
    (3)
    (3.1)
The Privilege of Learning - Part One: Knowledge
look at the boring book before you, you know, the one you were told to read for class. look at all the knowledge it contains.
how do you think did it get there? did someone just one day randomly decide they wanted to write down a few loose and unchecked thoughts on the matter and just send it out into the world? (admittedly, at times it feels like it)
or is this book, this one paragraph, perhaps even just this single line, the product of hundreds of years of curious minds working hard to dig for truths in this coal mine universe of questions? working to discover, gather, test, philosophize, summarize, discuss, disagree, try again, write, rewrite, edit, edit, edit and then finally! publish it? to in the end lay all those thousand hours of hard work before your feet, ready for you to just ... read it?
all this knowledge lying pressed between ur notes, or on ur teachers lips, and the years of passion of academics like u whose collaborate efforts have put it right there, allowing u, today, to have a look at it.
this book, in your hands, it is the product and tool of a privilege of such unfathomable value, how could anyone look at it and think it unimportant? or think themself too important to not read each word with reverence?
    (3.2)
The Privilege of Learning - Part Two: You
now look at the boring book before you once more. look at it with the wondrous thing that is your mind.
what do you think are the odds of you being you, just now, just here, hunched over this book with the brain capacity to understand its content? compare yourself to the billions of creatures on this planet who do not have your brain, aren't capable to retain such refined diamonds of knowledge. your mind (even if you might struggle with it sometimes) is an impressive and marvellous tool.
every piece of information you have ever memorised, it becomes a part of you, and this means that just by interacting with it, you are part of it as well: you, by reading this book, by discovering its knowledge, by testing it, discussing it, disagreeing or rewriting it, you become a heir to the hundreds of people before you, perpetuating the process and allowing more curious academics to celebrate their minds.
stop doing things despite yourself, and begin doing them because of yourself: if you work out, don't do it despite of your body, because you don't like the way it looks, do it because of your body, because of how strong and capable it is. it is the same with learning. don't study despite your tired or unfocused brain, wanting to watch a tv show instead, do it because of it, because your mind is capable of so many things, and you should never cease to let it grow.
you are here, right now, alive, with a book before you, and this book might not only answer questions but also open so many more - and you have the audacity to procrastinate?
    (4)
it is okay to want good grades.
it is okay to study to land a good job in the end.
it is okay to be tired.
    to feel overwhelmed.
    to feel trapped.
(it is not our fault that our society demands so much)
    all i'm asking is, please:
    Never cease to be amazed.
Never cease to be amazed at what the world has to offer.
Never cease to be amazed at what your mind has to offer.
You are the heir, the bearer and the teacher of glorious truths.
So i say to you, remember that studying-true learning, learning for the sake of celebrating and participating in the marvels of this world-is passion.
and passion is what makes a good academic.

You have no idea how happy I am to see someone speaking about academia as something which requires passion and curiosity to be genuine. I have become disillusioned with the world of academia in the past year after struggling with my mental health and being punished by the system for it. I lost my sense of self as it was defined by my measurable academic successes and failures. It is the sentiment in this video that is bringing me home to myself, a perspective that my dearest professors have brought out in me.

I always come back to your videos to help me in times of being tired or depressed and growing stagnant or wishing to. They motivate me like nothing else and I’ve shared them with my few friends, they loved them! I’m telling you, and please understand when I say this, that I’m not being dramatic, they move me to tears. Even though I’ve watched them many times. It makes me feel overwhelmed with joy every time. I can feel such life in it!!! I can feel the love, the passion and depth of all the words you share with us being like these books and things in which you explain so well. I hear the echos of all the time spent within them. Those moments shared by us in this life. The good the bad the difficult and easy, together and alone, all that we think and feel in these caverns of our heads. It’s lovely to be amongst the people who get this feeling so well 🖤🖤🖤
Thank you so much for sharing your art and thus a bit of your soul with us, truly beautiful!

I read your script in the comment cause as it happens, once you feel the joy of reading, it's second to none and reading with my own voice in my head makes your words talk to me. I can't wait to see them!
Hmm... I like what you said in your first video "old books, new thoughts"
Idk why but I often think about this 'quote'
I would like a video about romantizing every single part of your life and your own body
      Like how fascinating it is that humans are able to taste so many different things; the diversity of our skin, hair and eye colour; the fact that a few single words can built an entire world, named books; the joy of learning something new; the excitement of walking into a library; sitting alone with a friend and talking about everything;
I hope you understood what I mean, even though English isn't my first language^^
      Keep going, you're great!

giving this a like feels like i'm sagely nodding my head and agreeing with you. please know that in reality, the reaction was more some sort of awkward flailing proceeded by a little bit of hiding and then the eventual decision to give it a little heart because it's very sweet.

@@writingtales1213 Awww! That is such an adorable reaction! I'm glad I was able to create such a feeling for you! I absolutely love your work. I was so thrilled to have seen that you had returned with a new video! I paused everything I was doing (was at work filing some paperwork) just to watch and listen. I was in complete awe and tranced by your words. To put it simply, "Marvelous! Magnifique! Bravo!"

There's knowledge that i want to get, but it's not what is taught at my school, I'm completely and utterly bored and uninterested with what they teach, unless it's a certain topic in science, but I feel drawn to this "aesthetic" but I don't feel like I'd live up to it with the type of knowledge that I want to learn, so can someone tell me whether this is right or not? I mean, I still do want basic education, but I want a more advanced one in the areas that I love, so would I still be able to be apart of the Dark Academia community?

    • @writingtales1213
      @writingtales1213  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

i have no authority on the DA community, obviously, but in my opinion, i don't think there's fields that are "more right" than others for the "aesthetic".
perhaps begin asking yourself why you are bored with what you are taught. are you still in high school? or already at university? if you're still in high school, give it time. school is not where you are meant to dive deep into any fields, but learn how to learn, how to understand the structures of the world, and how to form yourself into the person you'll become one day. if you're already at university, why did you choose the field you chose? was it parental pressure or was there something that initially drew you to it? the first few semesters at university can be dry, but the longer you study, the more fascinating ANY field becomes.
furthermore, can you perhaps apply for a second minor in a field you do love? and even if you can't, you know, education is not just what a teacher or professor hands to you in the classroom. education is the work you put in after class. the books you read, your research, and your analysis of different topics when you connect them.
lastly, the aesthetic is, after all, just that. an aesthetic. what does it contain? turtlenecks and tartan trousers? archways and big walls of books? you can search for these no matter which knowledge you pursue. even if you study computer science, even if you're still just getting a basic education. maybe find yourself a fountain pen, decorate your desk to look the way you want it to, and you're right in the aesthetic.
personally, i think what matters far more than that, though, is that you don't let yourself get bored yet. even the most boring topics taught to me came to be useful eventually, even if in very surprising, unrelated ways. so in the meantime, while you wait to study what you love official,ly how about you do it already? go to the library (if you can) and pick up a book. or check on jstor for articles. indulge in the field already, you don't have to wait for a teacher to instruct you! l

i absolutely love your channel your videos totally incapsulate the dark academia “aesthetic” and show it for what it really is, if you don’t mind me asking..are you irish? i’m wondering because i am and your accent seems familiar :)

    • @writingtales1213
      @writingtales1213  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

thank you so much, that means a lot!
as for the accent, i get this a lot (and i sure as hell don't complain because is there even a more beautiful accent than the irish one?) but i'm not. i've studied in ireland for a semester once and seeing how, as a non-native english speaker i have no "own accent", the irish intonation must've just attached itself to me. or at least when i read my own writing aloud. i don't always sound like this, and i have *absolutely* no control over it :' D
