BTS WINGS era symbolism, explained: Blood, Sweat, Tears & Demian (PART 1 of 2)

- The BTS Wings album is full of references to literature and art. Using imagery from Demian by Herman Hesse, BTS explores the loss of innocence, and ties these themes to the characters in their existing fictional universe. Here is a guide to some of the most important symbolism.

To understand the WINGS era, we need to know both the *fictional universe of BTS* (as explained in my previous video: th-cam.com/video/n4o70iBIDNs/w-d-xo.html) and the novel *DEMIAN* . In this guide, *I summarize DEMIAN. Then I go over some of the most important symbolism in Boy Meets Evil & Blood Sweat Tears* (both Korean & Japanese versions).

The way I understand it:
#1 Begin, Jungkook is the youngest in the group and is Sinclair's childhood innocence.
#2 Lie, Jimin is the original sin, Sinclair's lie about the apples which marks the beginning of his fall from grace.
#3 Stigma, V is Sinclair's estrangement from his family. Sinclair describes his growing despair as death and compares his family being unable to see throught his facade to himself being like a murderer interrogated for an unrelated petty crime by an oblivious officer. His circle is seperation.
#4 First Love. Suga is at the center (1-2-3, 4, 5-6-7). I'm not sure but right now my prefered theory is that Suga is Demian with bits of Pritorius sprinkled in (thought don't both character are kinda similar too?) to be the mentor/daemon. He's the one blinding Jimin, so he can than remove the blindfold himself. He was supposed to blind Jin but kept messing up during filming so they switched him for V. And all that fire is destructive, but also enlightment. It goes hand in hand with the metaphor of the bird hatching out of its egg, destroying a world in the process. Rebirth implies destruction. He's also paired with Jungkook in previous era, and his short film references Jungkook's car accident too, and Jungkook is the youngest Sinclair. Also, might be noteworthy: after Jin who's excluded as he's not really in the same world as the others (they're all within him), Suga is the eldest in the group. Anyway, if I'm right and he is Demian, than his circle merging with Jimin links the daemon/temptor with the original sin.
#5 Reflection, RM is Sinclair's vice, with all the drinking and smoking. His own reflection is shattered and he no longers recognises himself. His circle is broken glass and merges with Jungkook, linking innocence with vice
#6 Mama, J-Hope is Sinclair's desire for the mother figure. He has all the universal mother / mother Mary / Eva symbolism. His circle merges with V's linking the rejection of the Father figure with the desire for the Mother figure.
#7 Awake, Jin is the eldest in the group and is Sinclair transformed / grown up. All the others are basically within him as past selves.
That's a bit oversimplified but I don't want to write an essay here. edit: I realize I did write an essay.

I mean like, there are so many different theories about this story but I think that this video and this comment here are the most accurate and logical views of the entire storyline. I don't know who, if BTS, BigHit or us, but someone should definitely pay you for your amazing work. Your videos are the best guidance I've encountered for new army, in which I included myself even after one year of stanning them, to catch up with all that BTS have done and have said and to understand a little bit better the struggles they have been through and the message their sending to the world and, specialy, to the youth.

Watching these it’s just makes me realize how deep they went and how smart they are and how every little background detail means something. I don’t think any other artists have gone into detail that much. And it all ties into loving yourself which is amazing. I really have mad respect for them. They have sum real smart writers

Give the BTS members plenty of credit as well. They crafted their characters to have similar personalities to their real ones, and they came up with a lot of the plot details. I feel sure RM was a major force between the use of Jung and Demian in BST!

I'm a new army and i was today years old when i discovered Bangtan universe and the whole theories thing. Boy am i mind blown. This added a whole new dimension to staning BTS. I'm shook to the core of my being. And now it saddens me that some people will never realize how deep, meaningful and artistic BTS is and they'll only see them as just another kpop boy band.

I just started reading the book. It's funny because I'm a heavy reader even if we had summer reading lists where we only needed to pick three, I read all of them. I'm surprised I haven't seen this book before now. But RM knew what he was doing when he used this book as a template. I heard many Korean students read the book willingly after RM told them about the video. That is cool. I wish American music inspired something other than sex and drugs. I have also noticed that if RM or any member really, recommends a song, they give the artist or band a big bump. BTS is awesome! I greatly appreciate your videos!

I love this! Thanks to BTS I read Demian and actually (besides being a GREAT book) helped me a lot to understand WINGS era.
My theory is that Jin is Sinclair and Taehyung is Demian, and all of the other members represents the phases Sinclair went through before being enlightened such as:
Aknowledge of the "dark" world, the beginning (Jungkook); First encounter with it, the apple, the lie (Jimin); Demian's arrival and the stigma of his ideas (Taehyung); Sinclair's "first love" and first self-guide, the girl that he loved and make him scape from the alcoholism (Yoongi); The time when Sinclair started to ask himself questions and grow thanks to Disirious -I don't remember his name- , Sinclair's "reflection" (Namjoonie); The meeting with Eva, the universal mother (Hoseok♡) and of course Sinclair's awakening before WW1, the end of the book (Jin).
I also think that Boy Meets Evil is like the prologue of the book, because it exactly explain what it is, a boy meeting the evil.

Man, it's really amazing the amount of layers BTS and BIGHIT put into this... I see 3 main layers in wings.
1) Just the music and the members. The songs on their own have amazing lyrics and production that make the whole album already full of meaning from the surface level.
2) Demian references and the music. Now this is ignoring the BU. It still makes sense even with only connecting the lyrics to Demian since the whole album was about loss of innocence, temptation and growing up for all the members. This is like what you did here in this comment.
3) The BU, Demian, and the music. Now this is the deepest layer. Not only looking at the real 7 boys but how they connect/ inspire their characters alongside Demian.
(And yes Ik it is MOTS7 era rn but I am still not over Wings lmao)
I *highly* recommend for you guys to read Demian. It will not only help understand the theories and music videos/short films, but it’s just an amazing pierce of literature over all.
I have the upmost respect for BTS and Big Hit for the art, literacy, lessons, and reality they have put into these songs/mv. The secrets, the struggles, the truth in in everyday life that they put into every character is mind blowing. Everyone can relate to these things. They hit feelings and make you cry, laugh and make you feel like you are there with them. I commend them for this and also to you for creating these videos and helping understand the truth within the bangtan world

also i wanna talk about how in almost most MV of BTS , Jin always seems to be the one healing , guiding , and becoming the source of nurture... (It show how Jin is behind the camera for his younger brothers in BTS )

This is why I think BTS Wings era was the best art they've ever made and resonates so much with young people or people in general. The constant battle between what you consider yourself to be, what you actually are and what you're trying to become can be terrifying and it makes you question yourself and who you are multiple times throughout your life. It can be so maddening not knowing what you are capable of doing when life is starting to apply that pressure on you. When you start to come into who you are later on, it can all be worth it depending on what you allowed yourself to turn into in the process.

WINGS is hands down the best BTS era in general. So of course we have great music, visuals and choreography. But then the story and message behind it is so amazing and in depth. It’s not anything to do with sex and drugs, it’s about growing up in life and how you change through experiences and how you have to accept that (at least that’s a part of what I got from it). It’s just this era is so interesting and there are so many details in EVERYTHING! From lyrics to MV’s to just scenes and paintings and historical stories. Wow. I’m honestly bewildered by this.

God I love this so much, I've missed the wings era so dearly as much as I have tried to adapt to the more positive visuals and meanings BTS have explored, the symbolism and the fucking BEAUTIFUL imagery from this era go unmatched to anything I've previously seen by any group of musicians. And fuck, I mean that, not as just some crazy fan. To this day, nothing beats wings, and I'll rewatch all the music videos and short films and read demain over and over until I die goodnight America

In the last era, Jin gave Namjoon a flask filled with a green liquid at the gas station. It almost seems like Jin realised he couldn't save the boys on his own and that he transmitted his dark secret to Namjoon. Like in the shot where they are at the table and he is the one standing up, inviting them to drink. It explains why Jimins sees another version of himself and the wormhole are getting out of control, because now they all know about these multiple universes. Jin's face cracking could mean a lot. I have a feeling that all these attempt to save his friends in all these multiple universes he's created by travelling back are slowly destroying him. Maybe his own destruction could be the thing finally break the cycle. ''Who must be born must fist destroy a world'' like the book says.

After reading the book and rewatching all of the content related to wings era, i actually think that in each of these pairings, one member represents sinclair and the other a mentor (demian, pistorius...), so jimin(sinclair) & yoongi(mentor), jungkook(sinclair) & namjoon(mentor) and when it comes to vhope its a bit unclear but i think that taehyung is sinclair and hoseok is the mentor. There's also a few book references from which i draw: sinclair painting a sparrow hawk and sending it to demian (jungkook sending the sparrow hawk to namjoon), pistorius playing the organ while sinclair listens (yoongi playing the organ) or sinclair hiding a bigger crime while admiting to the smaller one (taehyung getting arrested for graffiti instead of murder). The order of the songs on the album signifies this as well, with the first three songs solos being from jungkook, jimin and taehyung (sinclairs) and then the other three from yoongi, namjoon and hoseok (mentors). Yea i left out seokjin coz he isn't a part of a pairing, he seems to me like sinclair at the end of the book, without a mentor and trying to navigate his life on his own, which is also hinted at by him removing his earpiece in the awake short film and him kissing the statue (demian) goodbye.

When Jin kissed the statue which symbolises Tae it means Jin accepted himself and his inner self is within him which is demian that is tae
Maybe demians motive was to make Sinclair accept his own self
And we all know demian was sort of a person with special skills which may just symbolise wings

First of all. I love your videos. They were the ones that convinced me of presence or alternate universes. This video was amazing and it seems most of the BTS theories can be explained if one reads Demian. However, I have a question; if HYYH was Jin seeing his friends fall into disgrace and destruction, how does this relate to the alternate universe theory given in BST? Earlier, I would have thought that Jin is a time traveller who is set on fixing his friends' lives again and again, and BST is one such world full of temptations. However this video kind of challenges that for me. Anyway, I can't wait for part two! Thank you so much ❤

Coming back to this vid bc I found a translation to the official "Wings Concept Book" and so many parts were on point. Interestingly, they also pointed out that the dark water jhope sits in @9:12 represents melted chocolate (just like his representative chocolate bar :o). "when sinclair was suffering because of his lies, his mother gave him a piece of chocolate"

Did y'all notice that the statues features eerily resembles Taehyung's face?!. I figured that it was him that Jin kissed since he turned to the camera with a sinister smile. icarus and his father daedalus the greek inventor were escaping the maze that daedalus had built and entrapped them in. Icarus fixed his fathers wings for him with hot wax as he was old and couldn't do it himself. But when daedalus was fixing icaus's wings the king tried to stop them, so icarus's wings was not sturdy. They flew out if the maze and were flying on top of the ocean. they had to fly just under the sun, to not burn and just on top of the sea, so the wax wouldn't corrode the wings. icurus did not listen to daedalus as he loved the bliss of being airborne and free. He flew to high and died on what is now known as the icarian sea. His father never forgave himself for his death.
