It's been 30 yrs ago - I remember our test plug. Cut the ground electrode off of a normal plug and solder on a ground lead w/ clip. Looked a lot like your commercial tester. Maybe not as large a gap to jump. Thx Leon! That blue saw sounded good. ps You should be able to hear a good spark, blue in color.

Run points or run a points delete, I've got an xl-12 that gets bogged down after a bit. I've got to check the carb too.

Theres a reason for everything. I just finished a xl123 that would start but ran as if the switch was being turned off and on and would not rev up.. Did the carb overhaul, plug and still nothing. Took off the flywheel and looked as if someone was in there and had a air gap of about .020!! Set it at .005 and on thye first pull it it almost left the shop on its own.

I can replace it with a capacitor of the same vlaue though.
My saw is a points system.
.015inch gap in the points. 1976 manufacturing date 24 inch red homelite.

Do you have a video of the "pop and bang" on a saw from a spark issue? I'd love to hear the way it sounds for future reference. Thanks

The briggs 4 cycle points mower engines used sealer just like that where the coil and ground wires went through, may be somebody gave it the same treatment out of habit?

    Leon,
If I’m not getting spark through the plug how can I be sure whether it is the points or a bad coil? I would like to convert my EZ to an electronic module but need to make sure the coil is good. Any help is appreciated!

I have an xl 101. Do not see any fastener on the fly wheel. No threads on the shaft. How do you remove the fly wheel?

For a clean one, just give it one good hit with a rubber mallet.
